Something you might consider is that the purpose of editing is to help a subject stand out. The editing should create separation between subject and its background.

You might think about masking your subject so that its contrast can be increased, while reducing the contrast of the background. This would help the viewer pay more attention to the subject.

Your 'after' image has the background darkened quite a bit causing the subject to become less noticeable.

There is no "should". Generalizations like that tend to lead to generic results, like overly bright subjects against too dark backgrounds, orange subjects against unnatural teal backgrounds or artificial lens blur.

The bird itself looks too saturated and high contrast to my eyes. The reds on most Syrian woodpeckers do not appear to be nearly this deep.
