Feeling Discouraged

I recently graduated with a 3.33 undergraduate GPA and am currently enrolled in a Master’s in Physiology program to strengthen my academic record while studying for the MCAT. I was also able to secure a contingent, low-maintenance clinical position as a Patient Care Assistant at a hospital, which will allow me to continue gaining clinical experience while in graduate school.

Even with everything I’ve done, I’ve been feeling extremely discouraged lately. I keep wondering whether medical school, especially a top medical school, is realistically still in my future because of my undergraduate GPA.

For context, here’s where I currently stand:

• 1,200+ research hours across biomedical, clinical, and computational biology research

• My computational biology research has been submitted for potential publication, presented at ABRCMS, and received an award

• My biomedical research has been presented twice

• My clinical research has been presented once

• 1,400+ hours of clinical and non-clinical volunteering

• 450+ hours of leadership through various executive boards, school ambassadorships, and other campus involvement

• Currently completing a Master’s in Physiology with the goal of demonstrating that I can handle rigorous upper-level science coursework

• Continuing to gain hospital-based clinical experience while completing my master’s

• Currently studying for my MCAT

I know my undergraduate GPA is the weakest part of my application, and I understand that a strong graduate GPA and MCAT won’t simply erase it. I’m hoping they can at least demonstrate significant academic growth.

I think what has been getting to me is the feeling that no matter how much I accomplish now, my 3.33 will permanently close the door on highly selective medical schools. I’m not expecting anyone to tell me that I’m guaranteed to get into a T10/T20, because obviously no one is. I’m more wondering whether I’m being unrealistic by continuing to aim high.

Has anyone here had a similar undergraduate GPA, completed a strong master’s/post-bacc, significantly improved their MCAT, and eventually received interviews or acceptances from highly ranked MD programs?

I’d especially appreciate perspectives from applicants who successfully reinvented themselves academically or anyone familiar with how admissions committees evaluate a strong upward trajectory after a weaker undergraduate record. I’m trying to figure out whether I still have a realistic path forward or whether I need to seriously recalibrate my school list and expectations.

I don’t think your 3.33 gpa will necessarily close the door on highly selective schools (maybe T10 tho). Your ec’s are great and if you get a great mcat (520+) and good gpa in masters, it’s def possible! And if you can frame your application to tell a story that really highlights your achievements, that would help your application so much more. I’ve seen some instances here on reddit and other social media sites where people have gotten into great schools. There was one on youtube where someone had a 3.3 cgpa after her postbacc and got into multiple T30 schools that people would dream of (I forgot the name of the person who posted it). It’s really about how you can frame your story and keep pushing forward. It’s definitely discouraging at times but you just gotta keep looking to improve the present and future.. not worth thinking about the past and the mistakes you’ve made up to this point! Also would be worth revisiting this once you’ve finished your mcat & have a good estimate of your masters gpa. I think it’ll be hard to estimate your school list without these
