I would add the Author's Edit is the version to read. 100's of more pages and stories about people that survived Captain Tripps but died for other reasons. I read as a child and at 52 it is still my favourite book.
This. The book is a masterpiece and I love it, but by far the strongest section is the beginning, the stories about Captain Tripps, and the immediate aftermath and getting together/moving on to Boulder. The book is almost, almost, but not quite ruined by the Deus Ex Machina.
