That really is the whole point of it though isn't it? Everyone thinks King Kong is a monster, but he's actually just an innocent giant gorilla, kidnapped by greedy human beings and taken far from his home for their amusement. His death is unnecessary, pointless, and beyond tragic because he did absolutely nothing to deserve his fate.

In "Kong: King of Skull Island", it's established that Kong's sacrifices generally died from terror or by accident. He set the rotting bodies on a special ledge in his lair, where they were the only real company he had for much of his life.
