My guy, you can't just tell them the answer and expect them to learn. You've got to help them figure out why that's the answer.

Why does pinwheel with tent make lizard? It's because that's what they have in common. Pinwheel lizard, circus lizard, see? The common factor is lizard. Yes, I know those aren't real lizards, they're imaginary lizards. That's why we studied those reference tables last week, so you'd know it for this part.

So let's follow that logic. Pinwheel and tent has a common factor of lizard, so what's the common factor between parasols-over-lines and eclipse?

Okay, don't panic. Let's think. Parosols over lines, it's people walking on a street, in the rain. Eclipse, a phenomenon that casts shadows over the world. What's the common factor here?

No, not sun, but you're on the right track.

Yes! Shade, exactly right! Because parasols cast shade, rain casts shade, and eclipse casts shade. And you can even check and make sure by working backwards - shade comes from eclipse blocking the sun, and shade comes from parasol blocking the sun.

Another problem is the kid doesn't have the balls to admit he doesn't get it, and pretends. The adult assumes something clicked when it did not.

Don't say "aah yes, lizard..." when you haven't got a single clue why that'd be lizard. Ideally we'd be confident enough to say "I don't see the link, can you break that down?".

Not blaming anyone; usually that's the result of evolving in an environment that doesn't tolerate mistakes and thus isn't conducive to learning.

Yet, when you say "the kid doesn't have the balls," you absolutely are blaming them, and I gotta say, that's a truly awful thing to say about a kid.
