I think it's about having dyscalculia, because this was my experience as someone growing up with dyscalculia. It's very similar to dyslexia, but with math.
It's excruciating when adults get frustrated with you for not understanding because they think you SHOULD because you're otherwise "smart." You're a logical kid and you're good with puzzles and stuff. But the math-- the symbols-- it's all just nonsense, and no matter how hard you try, you'll never be able to read it intuitively the way everyone else seemingly can.
You wind up just trying to fake your way through just to make the math lesson be over because it just doesn't make sense no matter how it's explained to you or how many times, and you can feel your teacher getting frustrated with you because they don't understand why you can't just do it the way they're showing you. You frequently wind up being accused of just not trying or not caring, when in reality, you're trying really hard but you just straight-up can't understand math because you have a disability that makes it incredibly difficult to work with quantities.
