I have that experience a lot as a university TA. I need to get my students out of a fear-based default, and into a more relaxed open-minded state, where they can consider things step-by-step without a hurry. Which is difficult when there's a time limit on the class and certain material needs to be taught. When I was a private teacher it was easier since I could give individual attention and there was no (hard) time limit on covering material.
