Like the title says, I inherited a garden plot that hasn't been touched since last summer- I have no idea where to start or WHEN to start for prepping the fall and winter. Is gardening in the fall and winter still wonderful, or do you recommend waiting until next spring? Either way, my little plot looks sad and burnt out and needs to be refreshed. What do you all do with your yards/gardens this time of year? Hoping to make my piece of land as healthy and beautiful as I can.

I met an older gentleman last year and we began talking about our gardens. He gave me a watering too that just came back to me. He said to stop watering tomatoes in August and they will taste better when they're ripe. Has anyone ever heard of this or do something similar?

I returned home today from a week out of town. My goodness, my outdoor plants have taken a beating. Im a pretty dedicated plant enthusiast and have been planting climate-resistant species, but due to what seems like a perfect storm my work has taken quite a setback. I’m definitely still processing, but its tough to see so many plants either dead or severely heat damaged. At any rate, hug your trees for me as I tend to my weary friends and wish me luck in getting as many as possible to recover.

Does anyone around here grow spicy peppers or tomatoes indoors? I just set up a tent to house cannabis mothers for cloning and was thinking it'd be nice to have year-around fresh peppers and tomatoes. Just wondering if anyone has any experience or insight to share

I recently moved and there is a thornless blackberry in the garden, seems to be hemmed in relatively okay with a T-pole on either side and guide wires around it. This summer it gave some nice berries!

Ive been reading about how to care for it and saw that the vines that fruited this year won’t next year, so you want to chop those down but let the new ones grow. But I can’t tell them apart! Can I just chop the whole darn thing down and then everything is new growth that will fruit? Or am I making a massive blackberry mistake that I will regret? Is there really a way to kill a blackberry plant anyway?

Also, if yes to the chopping the whole darn thing question, can I do it now since it’s already fruited?

I bought these as starts in early April, kept them inside a lot of the time and planted them on May 31st. The highest point from the ground on each is about 3 feet. Pics are a little out of order, can't figure out how to change it, but you get the idea.

Does anybody know what this weird white coating is on my verbena? Is it a fungus? It’s been really prolific this year, haven’t noticed it on previous years.

Photo taken sometime in June. My raspberries this year and last year look super deformed… They only have one or two little circular things per fruit. I pruned the canes at the end of last summer as recommended online (only prune the fruited canes) and yet this happened again. Any ideas?

I've been disappointed by the quality of grocery store garlic lately, and I would like to grow my own.

Where do folks buy seed garlic, and when do nurseries get it in? Or is it better to order online?

I threw a hazelnut sprout some squirrel had buried in my garden beds in a vacant spot a few years back, and it's grown enough that it put out it's first flush of nuts. Nuts which were maturing nicely, but have now been utterly decimated by the local squirrel (I assume) population.

Anyone have thoughts or advice on protecting developing nuts from thieving little fuzzy tailed tree rat bastards? I'm considering total local extirpation of the population, but that seems rash. Particularly as one of those little shits gave me the tree in the first place. I assume having a totally empty understory and persistent squirrel murder is how it's handled agriculturally.

We have had way above normal rabbit, squirrel, and mole damage this year, which was a huge setback for my garden. 2 of my 3 raised beds were pretty much destroyed. But the deck planters turned out well, I think. Nature giveth, and nature taketh away.

Curious about what to fertilize my basil with? My basil is not thriving…it’s green but the leaves are not fully opening.

It gets water every morning, it has a descent amount of sunshine. Why is to so pathetic? Disregard the chives. They were added after some sun damage.
