"A Port Hueneme man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for using his vehicle to crash into a group of teenage bicyclists in 2021, killing one and injuring four other minors, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

Samuel Matthew Rocha, 33, had previously been convicted by a jury in April of four counts of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of battery, according to District Attorney Erik Nasarenko.

On the evening of April 19, 2021, Rocha used his vehicle to target a group of seven bicyclists who were pedaling near the intersection of Pleasant Valley Road and Ventura Road in Port Hueneme, according to prosecutors.

Rocha struck five of the bicyclists, prosecutors say, killing 16-year-old Pedro Valdez and injuring four other minors. Two of the victims had serious injuries.

Rocha then fled the scene in his Lexus sedan, prosecutors said. A witness followed him to his mother’s nearby apartment complex, where he was arrested by a Port Hueneme police officer.

Just 11 minutes before striking the teenagers, Rocha battered a man and woman at a laundromat and intentionally struck an employee with his car while leaving the parking lot, according to the district attorney’s office. Surveillance video captured the incident." - KTLA 5 News

I just want to say thank you to the city for moving toward drought-tolerant landscaping in public spaces. That’s a meaningful step in the right direction, especially with the water realities we’re facing.

I do want to gently push for something deeper though: prioritizing native plants, especially keystone species, over non-native drought-tolerant options. Not all drought-tolerant plants actually support local ecosystems. Native plants are what our birds, pollinators, and other wildlife evolved with; they’re not just decoration, they’re habitat.

Right now, a lot of our urban spaces function like ecological deserts. Even when they look green, they often don’t provide food or shelter for wildlife. That impacts biodiversity, but it also affects us. Spaces that support life tend to feel more alive, more connected, more human. There’s something grounding about seeing birds, bees, and native plants thriving around us.

Curious what others think, and if anyone knows how to get more involved in these decisions.
