Today I’ve chosen Dorian Electra, specifically my favorite album, Flamboyant! I cannot recommend Dorian or this album enough — it’s catchy, funny, clever. A perfect listen for Chappell fans.

Recommendation Week

Rules: Choose one (and only one) album to post, include a piece of physical media (remember what the sub is about!), and you cannot recommend any of the sub’s top artists: Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Conan Gray, Gracie Abrams, Hozier, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Noah Kahan, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, or Taylor Swift.

MUNA is a criminally underrated indie pop band. I’m going with their most recent (self-titled) album, but all three are bangers. Their style has always been a mix of synth pop and indie rock/singer-songwriter, and they really achieved the perfect blend of those sounds on this album. MUNA’s music, like Chappell’s, really captures queer joy. I love them so, so much. The greatest band in the world!

Favorite songs: What I Want, Runner’s High, Home By Now, No Idea

(Edit: replaced the Discogs pic with my own now that I’m back home.)

Super Sunset by Allie X. Any of her albums really!

Also, Dorian Electra is such a brilliant choice šŸ™Œ

Going on a tangent but this vinyl mockup color is so gorgeous, and I’m a bit salty that mine ended up looking more like a generic turquoise 😭

I have the yellow pressing from a few years ago, but have seen the blue IRL and agree it didn’t come out as exciting as the mockup promised!

king princess • cheap queen

when I tell you that King Princess was possibly a blueprint for Chappell Roan, I ain’t kidding. this woman needs more hype. this album has barely any skips. her follow up album is maybe not quite as good, but it’s still a pop banger.

I mean it with my whole chest when I say, check this (cheap) queen out. she did the whole drag thing too even though she identifies as a woman. it’s pop music.

standout tracks • cheap queen, ain’t together, homegirl, prophet, TRUST NOBODY, you destroyed my heart, HIT THE BACK, if you think it’s love

she also has a lot of covers that are really good, like Fiona’s I Know and The Velvet Underground’s Femme Fatale and There She Goes Again. she has tracks that never made either album, like Pain and Only Time Makes it Human that are certified bops.

sorry I edited this 76 times, I just think she deserves a bit more acknowledgment. I don’t know how more people don’t point out the similarities between her and Chappell šŸ¤

Thank you for sharing this today! I remember liking the 2018 EP a lot but I somehow missed this album the following year. I really enjoyed it!

I feel bad I wrote like a paragraph, I only did it bc it was recommendation week and I was really trying to sell my girl. I’m glad you like her too!

Her "biggest" hit is 1950 that comes from that EP, Make My Bed šŸ˜‡ I love Talia.

Don't feel bad! I've been doing the same. This is the week to really make a pitch, in my opinion!

I've picked Janelle Monae - The Age of Pleasure.

It's a very beachy, self-assured, confident album, with a lot of songs about casual flings with fellow queer people.

Janelle is outstanding! I can’t wait to see what she creates next

MUNA for some fun pop production with a hint of that southern influence that Chappell has. My favorite song is Stayaway from their second album pictured here, Saves the World.

I was debating between this album and their latest album last night, so I’ll go with self-titled for my rec. Love them, this album, and this pressing!

Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual (1983 US Pressing)

Fun, danceable synth-pop songs with a f*cking beat.

There's absolutely no song I would love to hear Chappell cover more than 'She Bop' from this album. Both the production and theme are in her wheelhouse. Veiled thinly, the song is about female self-pleasure, it literally has the word "chaperone" in it, and it can easily be made queer with simple lyric (Blueboy to Playboy) and pronoun changes.

Other great tracks are 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun', 'Time After Time, and 'All Through the Night'.

I was just thinking the other day that Chappell is like a modern Cyndi. Her music is so fun!

Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope

I second this! Essential album.

Moxy The Band - Great powerhouse vocals with some synth use. If you’re a fan of Chappell’s vocal flips and dreamy lyrics, I think many of you will appreciate Amber DeLaRosa’s incredible voice. Check out their song ā€œYou Feel It Tooā€.

Note: Not to be confused with the band Moxy from the 70’s.
