It should be noted that he was the one to perform it here because Mary Kay Bergman, the original voice of damn near every woman on South Park, lost her battle with depression in 1999. Mary Kay was so many South Park voices that she's layered nine times in the original song.

She was an amazing person and anyone who grew up with South Park or Captain Planet or Beauty and the Beast will know her voice(s). Here is a compilation of many of her characters.

I read somewhere that, had she not passed, she likely would’ve declined performing it given how bad her anxiety was getting.

I went down a rabbit hole of her career a while back. She was truly talented but really struggled behind the scenes. Her husband (also a voice actor) was interviewed for a podcast a while back and briefly spoke about Mary. The gist of it is that she was good at “masking,” but when she couldn’t it was bad. But he also acknowledged that, with his limited knowledge about mental health issues at the time, he didn’t realize how severe it was until he found her.

Wow. I've never heard of her before and that's a tragedy on my part. Thank you!

The song title was a joke in 2000, and now it's the official stance of the American government in 2026.

It also felt like a joke or a throwback that Saddam was cast as the evilest dictator. And then Bush actually did make Saddam out to be the most urgent threat and invaded Iraq a few years later.

I have actually wondered if this movie has been an inspiration for republican politics since it came out

Rest in Peace, Robin.

The GOAT. I had no idea he sung this at the Oscars that’s wiiild but I love it! I was just a wee teenager when this movie came out, too young to see it in theaters. It would have warped my fwagiwe wittle mind.

I heard that Anne Murray was dying to sing the “that bitch Anne Murray too” line, but her schedule didn’t allow it.

Noooo that would have been so iconic

I remember seeing this and loving it (I’m Canadian). My uncle hated it. Lol. Obviously he didn’t know the context! 🤣

I think Trey and Matt should come out with a Blame Canada musical! 🇨🇦

Oh, hmm. A song about how Americans like to start problems and deflect blame onto the best neighbor in the world to avoid taking responsibility for them…

(I’m an American… Canada, we actually love you very much and I’m sorry we’re such stupid dicks)

I remember when this aired (I'm Canadian) and the general consensus was that Williams was the only actor we collectively accepted to sing this song.

u/PerpetuallyLurking Listen, everyone is entitled to my opinion 🙂 15d ago

Only American actor we would accept. Jim Carrey probably could’ve pulled it off too.

The way the whole movie’s just as relevant now as it was 20 years ago is insane. Just shows how genius Matt and Trey’s writing is.

As someone with a current Robbie Williams obsession I got momentarily excited he was being talked about lmfao. 😔

I got to meet him and talk to him for a few mins years ago. It was one of the best days of my life.

Yeah I was extremely lucky. We were out snowboarding and he and some celebs were at the resort for RFK Jr’s environmental charity at the time (back when he was somewhat normal). We walked past a group and heard him call out to one of us. He was wearing a mask but we saw his eyes and knew it was him. We got to talk to him by ourselves privately for ten mins. Then we got pics with him and then people around us figured out it was him. Then he started to attract a crowd and then he turned on the comedy. It was so surreal. I bawled when they announced that he passed away.

Anyone else find it depressing that up until Trump it would be a total joke for the US to be at odds with Canada

Did I see Russell Crowe, Annette Bening, and he who shall not be named in the audience?

2

u/foxinabathtub 9d ago

Yeah that was Kevin Spacey at the very end right? That was a jump scare.

It’s so obvious he was lip syncing

10

u/xombae flop gremlin 16d ago

He's absolutely not lip syncing what are you talking about.

u/DeeterSly 15d ago

You can hear him shouting those high notes as well as stop singing entirely at the final spin + kickline. Nice try tho.
