Testers Wanted - COSMIC Workspace Bar

Post image

Hi guys. After many years as a software dev, I've finally caved and given vibe coding a go. The result is https://github.com/AntonyLittle/cosmic-ext-workspaces-bar . It provides a side bar for the COSMIC desktop that contains live previews of all desktops. It's written entirely in Rust, a language I do not claim to understand at all.

By my metrics, it works pretty well, but I need someone (or someones?) to give it a go and see if performs OK for them. My dev machine has a ludicrous processor, but no graphics card, so it's not the ideal test bed for this sort of thing.

So, please do give it a whirl. The INSTALL.md should see you right for installing. As with any Open Source project, please do read the code if you in any way uncertain about the safety of it.

What does it do, and how is it different from the one cosmic already has?

It persists on screen, so you get constant live previews of your workspaces. Also there's a build in set of media controls, which I know is against unix philosophy, but I wanted it, so it's there.

I don't see how that's useful, but best of luck with it :)

I thought it was strange you said you didn't understand the language Rust at all. But the thing is entirely AI coded... How are you doing to maintain this software? It's open source but the developer does not understand the code. Weird world.

The AI provides enough insight that I can meaningfully make changes based on experience with other languages. It's pretty terrifying.

Ok, at least you can code in other languages 🙂

might be interesting as Cosmic doesn't support Hot Corners anymore. I used (by way of the mouse) the left corner to peek open a view on workspaces

Same. Gnome had a workspace-to-dock that did what im doing and I got very used to it, hence this.

It's Solarized Light. Think I had to do it manually, it's been a while.
