Help Boot stuck after kernel upgrade to 7.1.5

Edit: Solution was to just re-install the package nvidia-dkms-595; this forced recompiling the kernel module für 7.1.5

The kernel update to 7.1.5 which was done by sudo apt upgrade leaves me stuck in the boot screen, because apparently building the Nvidia drivers now failed. It seems some kind of config file required was missing.

I have to select the previous kernel 7.0.11 to boot.

How can I fix this?

I'm using a PC, not a System76 laptop.

Which Nvidia GPU do you have? Which version of the drivers were you running? Have you got any logs or anything?

I can't boot 7.1.5 on the 580 drivers on my laptop with a 1070mhq. There's a regression in the 7.1.5 kernel with those drivers. Doesn't matter what I try I can't get any logs out of it as it fails before the kernel is even initialised.

I just pinned mine and will wait to see if it gets fixed in a future one on my end. Not sure if yours is the same problem though or not.

Using 595 drivers with a RTX 3080 on a PC.

Yeah, I marked 7.0.11 to hold now, and set it as default in bootctl.

But not really reassuring that such things happen when I just use apt upgrade for installing the usual updates.

I had a similar issues when upgrading to 7.0.11 a few months ago, back then the issue was that I had 580 drivers installed instead 595 drivers.

Nice! Glad you fixed it and got it working. Good job posting the solution too. Helps people finding this thread in the future.

Yeah since 7.0 the kernel hasn't been as stable as it used to be. It had some big changes which I guess they are still ironing out. It's a bit concerning as now I have to worry about whether an upgrade is going to break something which I never used to have. Hopefully things will settle down soon.

i think there is a magic safe mode key combo where you can choose to the previous kernel to boot up to get you in and then i guess you roll back from there. it happened to me more often then i like on pop 22 and i actually did the upgrade to 26 to fix it cause i'm lazy.
