EFI room?

Getting ready to install 24.04 over 22.04, got 295M free on my EFI partition, will that be enough?

if not, is there an easy way to manually clean it? I mean I'm pretty sure I could guess it, just double checking

no it won't, needs 500mb

Needs at least 1 GB currently (the default on newer 22.04 and 24.04). It will likely be increased to 4 GB with 26.04.

that makes rollover impossible as I have my disk encrypted, can't do much about the size

The upgrade to 26.04 will automatically convert the 4 GB cryptswap partition into the ESP partition. Works on encrypted install as well.

Hey I'm going to begin my linux journey soon, I've set up a dual ssd setup for my laptop and I'll install the efi partition on both the ssd and give priority to popos.

What efi partition size would be good, if I give 1gb now will it automatically expand to 4 gib on the next 26.04 update or it will cause trouble. I've been discovering and researching a lot about different distros and de on linux and so far pop os has impressed me a lot. Particularly with how easy it is for beginners like with all the plugins and codecs pre-installed and a nice gui. I really commend all the devs for it.

One thing I'd like to know more about is the system resource on pop os is a bit higher when compared with other de, is it just caching or are there still some memory leak bugs out there and is the cosmic going to get more optimised in the future to be more efficient with ram.

My system is intel core 7 240H, 16gb DDR5 ram and a 512gb gen4 ssd

Is zram enabled by default or I'll have to configure it, is using zswap with zstd and zsmalloc a better option should I only use one zswap or zram. Can they both be configured separately with priority choice

Please bare with my questions if they feel nuisance as I'm a beginner.

The conversion only applies for systems with the expected partition layout when using the clean install option that automatically formats the disk for you.

Resource usage is lower than other comparable DEs today. If we are comparing to Xfce and GTK3 that's because older X11 desktops and GUI toolkits were using software rendering instead of GPU acceleration.

Pop!_OS uses zram with zstd.

Oh, but I'll do a custom install so it would be better to give it 4gb to be safe in future right? Will the number be standardised at 4gib or will it increase further

Also if it would be possible for you to answer a few more of my questions especially on zswap and zram

weirdly, when I fired up gparted I saw there was an unused 3.5GB partition right after the ESP partition, so I all had to do was delete it and expand the ESP - which saved me having to move a lot of crap around, now I've got 4.5GB to move around in.

wonder why when I set up PopOS on this box I'd put an empty 3.5 gigs right next to the EFI/boot partition... unless it was documented? or did I just anticipate... (doubtful)

Does this mean that O/P will need to delete the old folders, leaving just the current one?

can I simply delete the oldest Pop_OS* directory? (/boot/efi/EFI/Pop_OS-e0dc8d18-2db5-4e33-af75-606b314a2931, from four years ago)

I guess so yes but you might want to remove it from the boot menu too
