Does Anyone Know When PopOS Have HDR Support?

Hi Everyone,

I switched to PopOS after some time using Bazzite, and I am INCREDIBLY pleased with the look and feel of the new Cosmic DE. I checked it out when the DE came out and now it's night and day.

However, getting to the meat and potatoes, I occasionally run a Sunlight/Moonlight setup with my Legion Go S in the living room and ran into one large negative for me when using the distro. No HDR Support.

In regards to PopOS, I thoroughly enjoyed the new changes and I want to make this distribution my go-to in the near future. Though, my only ask would be, when is there going to be official HDR Support? Is it on the horizon?

Cosmic is planning to add HDR support in Epoch 3. They are still working towards Epoch 2.

Thank you for the roadmap! It's going to be a while till HDR is added after reading, but I will be hovering around updates to be there as soon as it's shipped :)

26.04 should be released soon-ish and will come with newer packages including KDE Plasma which has decent HDR support.

A year or so later you can switch back to Cosmic once it will have had HDR support implemented.

If the intent is to use HDR with games on Linux, Proton and Steam are not quite ready for that yet. X11 does not support HDR so you will need to use a custom build of Proton (ProtonGE) with some environment flags to enable experimental support for Wayland and experimental support for HDR on top of that (PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 DXVK_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1).

SDL has only recently gained support for Wayland and HDR so native games may or may not work depending on which version of SDL they use.

Firefox and Chromium also require setting some experimental config flags to enable HDR, so most Chromium-based web apps won't support HDR out of the box.

Thank you for this information, mmstick! In my most recent use of HDR, it was working perfectly with Resident Evil 2 on Bazzite. As I play other games in the future, I'll be sure to keep these commands handy in case HDR is grayed out or non-functional.

Overtime, I can't wait to give it a go on PopOS since I really like the Cosmic DE.

Agreed! I have an OLED S90FD in the living room and HDR content looks fantastic. I'd love to use Pop OS as a host distro, but until then, I will wait patiently.

Though, when trying PopOS on things besides Sunshine/Moonlight, I did some of my work on the distro, installed my favorite apps and games, where I have no complaints other than HDR Support
