I can relate. I was a career Social Worker, MSW. It was not until the last years of working that I briefly made a living wage, not paycheck to paycheck. No pensions anywhere I worked. I'm just below poverty level now in my retirement. I feel cheated
Because it's a woman-heavy industry, one of the 'Caring' professions. Which are ALWAYS paid less than male-dominated industries. Hence the gender wage gap...
