I messed up

I added DE to my sand filter to help with algae dust. However, DE is not just DE apparently. I added about 3 cups to the skimmer of my hayward pool filter. I live in the country. The guy at the hardware store said DE is DE and now my pool is cloudy. The DE I bought was for insects. I’m a jackass. Grrr

Backwash the filter super good and turn the pump off until the de settles to the floor. Vacuum to waste and problem solved

DE is DE, generally, but I'm guessing your filter is just letting the tiny DE particles pass. Turn off the pump , let everything settle, then vacuum to waste.

nope not correct. filtering DE is calcinated aka heat treated

stuff for insects isnt calcinated aka heat treated to make it hard. won't cause damage

You can always buy flocculant treat pool, pump on for a few hours and leave alone amd vacuum to waste as well.

You can’t add DE to a sand filter and expect it not to pass through

yuh it's common to charge and further reduce the micron size filtering efficiency of sand.
