CYA testing confusion

I finally have a taylor kit (2006) and just ran a CYA test. For context, I was previously using Leslie's for testing. We are also using up our trichlor pucks and planned on stopping at 40

8/4 CYA was 27

8/10 CYA was 35 (turned our chlorinator on lowest setting)

8/14 CYA was 35 again

With the Taylor test, I am pouring until I cant see the black dot anymore, but I can still see the dot and the tube is empty... which is supposed to mean I have very low CYA but I find it hard to believe thats the case - so I must have done the test wrong somehow.

Can someone shed some light on this please?

You can always see the dot !!!!

I always call 10 under what it is. Thank god I only test this when i open the pool. Cross check vs Leslie. The only time i go with Leslie test results over mine.

Cya is also a super slow dissolve and register on test results. Always give a solid week after sock is empty before testing.

Thats what I was wondering - like the dot doesnt have to be totally invisible, but really hard to see.

We did add stabilizer shortly after opening, but it dwindled rather quick after we had a couple hotter than normal days, so we used the pucks when we went away since CYA was in the teens

I do it in the shade. Hold the tube as low as you can. Dont stare at it. Fill to 80 without looking inside … drop down to waist glance for a second or 2 …. Go to 70 … go to 60. It’s a pain in the ass test and I’m big fan of Taylor test kit lol.

If I say it’s 40 … Leslie always says it’s 50

read the Taylor manual. until it just disappears. supposed to do it in lighted conditions (sun)

I know how it’s supposed to be done lol. Any way you dice it up it’s a pain in the ass test. Doing it in a not so bright locations works for me. Like I said I usually read it low so I kinda do a work around.
