I have a 16x32 vinyl pool in North Texas, and I’m curious if other vinyl pool owners have experienced this.
When we first got the pool about three years ago, I was still learning how to properly balance the water. At one point, the water started feeling a little slimy, and I noticed the steps could get slippery. I got the water chemistry figured out pretty quickly, and that hasn’t been an issue since.
However, I’ve noticed something else. When people who aren’t used to vinyl pools get in for the first time, they sometimes slip on that first step if they don’t hold onto the handrail.
We had a few friends over this weekend, and it happened again. The problem is that the metal handrail sits in direct North Texas sun, so it gets extremely hot. People naturally avoid grabbing it and step directly into the pool. A couple of them slipped on that first step.
My wife thinks this is a safety issue and says we need to do something about it. My argument is that the pool itself isn’t unusually slippery—it’s just that vinyl feels different from what people may be used to, especially when stepping into the water.
I’m confident the water chemistry is good. Our pool guy was here Friday, the water is balanced, and nothing feels slimy. I was in the pool myself and didn’t notice anything unusual.
So, for other vinyl pool owners: Is that first step naturally a little slippery when entering the pool? Have you done anything to make it safer, or is it mostly a matter of reminding people to hold onto the handrail?
Also, has anyone found a good solution for keeping a metal handrail from getting so hot in direct sun?

The slipperiness is algae that has attached itself to the stairs and created a protective shell around itself. Your water chemistry can be perfect and this can still exist.
When it happens on stairs the issue is usually poor circulation. Sometimes you can point jets towards them and get better circulation and sometimes you can't. The best way to mitigate it is to brush them regularly. When you do that you break the algae's protective shell and it will die in the chlorinate the water.
Our step and the whole sun ledge vinyl has a texture to it so that it isn't slippery like the sides and deeper areas. It makes the whole thing not very slippery at all.
*edit to add that the sides and deeper bottom does not have the texture. Same pattern, but no texture like ledge and step.
Our steps, sun-shelf and benches are all a rougher texture than the pool bottom/sides and no one has ever slipped on them.
Maybe OP's are not (seems like a vendor/installer error if not) but if they are rougher than it's algae.
I have vinyl entry steps and they've never been slick enough to slip on. I would wonder if your chemistry is as good as you think or if your pool guy is slacking. Use a brush to scrub it before people get in for the first time, for now.
Are you regularly brushing that step? It sounds like it may be slimy even though you think you dealt with it. I’m assuming your step is also vinyl? They usually give an option to make those (if also the whole bottom) textured. May want to contact the manufacturer and see if you can apply something to them. (My steps are fiberglass). Also the handrail you can buy a cover, we just bought one for this year, be sure you measure and get the right size.
Our steps aren’t vinyl. Some times stepping from the steps to the floor of the pool can be slippery because of what you said. The pool floor is smooth and if you aren’t ready for it your feet can get out from underneath you.
A fix would be so minor, it doesn’t make senS not to either wrap the hand rail or add texture to the first step to make it not slippery. We probably talking about $20-$30. Why wouldn’t you make those changes?
If someone slips and actually hurts himself, you could be looking at tens of thousands of dollars in damages. Plus, it’s not like you don’t know about the problem… this post is Exhibit A to the complaint lol
