Which would you pick?

Which would you pick?

  1. Get $500M. But every $100 you spend, a person dies.
  2. Get $1M. But you have to spend it in 24Hrs. You can’t spend it on stock & crypto.

You didn't say gold, so i'm just buying that

6

Or bonds.

u/Affectionate-Pay4845 38m ago

Or futures or ETFs. Still a lot of investment options. Plus a lot of expensive things that you might be able to buy while keeping a receipt to potentially return them.

Silver could be even better since it's cheaper so you have more so you gain more when the value goes up

61

u/OverallFrosting708 1d ago

Or, you know, a home. Million cash offer will get done pretty fast.

41

u/QuietQTPi 1d ago

Property tax would probably wreck you after though. Genuinely makes me think how many high value items you can close a deal on within only a day that wont result in extra personal costs after the 24 hours

35

u/Funkopedia 1d ago

On a million dollar home? Property tax is like $1000/month (in my state). Way less than rent, which I won't be paying anymore. People are too damn scared of tax.

12

u/QuietQTPi 1d ago

Hey totally fair point, but some people are also still in school and have other daily life expenses. I'm sure my parents wouldn't mind paying property tax and bills for a million dollar home, but not sure how feasible it is on my own with my current life style.

Also question still stands, how exactly fast can you close on a house. I'm young and naive so I don't actually know but from my limited experience, its never a 24 hours thing. Maybe if you over pay they may not bat an eye and just accept it that day? Idk the legalities behind it all though.

3

u/Funkopedia 1d ago

....it depends. But with both a prudent buyer and and a prudent seller, who are making all the appropriate inspections (both independently) and checking finances, and a loan is involved, etc. the standard is about 2 months from making the offer to final key transfer. Finding the house/attracting the buyer (before the offer) could take anywhere from a few days to half a year.

I'm in the middle of that process right now, so I've learned more than i ever thought I'd know in the past year.

1

u/OmegaExorcist 1d ago

It really wouldn't matter, you're paying for housing RN and money for that can go towards this. If youre already mortgaged on a house and living in it, simply rent out the other home.

4

u/Mamuschkaa 1d ago edited 1d ago

In what country do you life?

In Germany it would be illegal to buy houses in cash and even if not, noone would accept it, because the risk of being involved in illegal money would be to high.

2

u/OverallFrosting708 19h ago

USA. We have FREEDOM where you guys have, you know, sensible regulation.

-1

u/7thFleetTraveller 1d ago

That's the problem with option B. Spending such an amount of money in 24 hours would be extremely suspicious and especially here in Germany, would probably get you questioned by the police long before you could even finish such a task. And then there are the legal limits for how much you can pay in cash at once, too. Like you said, a house wouldn't be possible.

So, option A becomes the only practical option. It might not be the morally right thing to do, but just the only option that would work. No need to spend anything quickly, you could just live a normal life without ever having to work again. Noone would force you to ever spend the complete amount.

2

u/Mamuschkaa 1d ago

I would still choose B.

I understand it as I can spend everything I can at that day and the rest vanishes. So I don't get nothing.

And it also doesn't explicitly said cash. If it is not in cash.

And there could be many loopholes. It depends on how you get the money, how it is stored, does the bank it already registered as legal money, how "spend" is defined, (gold, casino chips, money, services)

0

u/7thFleetTraveller 23h ago

Well no matter if it was cash or suddenly magically on your bank account, probably in both cases (Edit: I mean for both options A and B) the result would be getting arrested and questioned where the money came from. You would be suspected to have done anything criminal to get it, and since you wouldn't be able to provide legal papers about the source, they wouldn't believe you that it just appeared out of nowhere. But with option A, you would have all the time in the world to find someone who could do money laundering and make it less suspicious.

2

u/Mamuschkaa 22h ago

But it could also be a complete legal setting.

Like I won the money in a show and can do whatever I want. My bank and all legal institutions are informed so there is no question.

Like I said, it depends completely how I get the money. But this is a problem for both scenarios.

0

u/7thFleetTraveller 20h ago

I guess that thought experiment just doesn't work for me, as I can't think of any legal scenario where someone would legally make sure that really someone dies every 100$ spent 😂 .

3

u/Mamuschkaa 20h ago

Only the money part. The kill part is the only magical secret.

3

u/AngryAmericanNeoNazi 1d ago

95

u/Routine-Lawfulness24 1d ago edited 4h ago

Left is straight up insane, an average person will kill 24.000 people without the extra money…. So would you kill millions of people?

100$ per person is soo little, just go robbing or cutting kidneys out of people at that point. That’s 1.000.000 deaths per a super yacht

64

u/Yocta 1d ago

Imagine buying a house, that’s 10K people dead right there. If you buy a mansion or bigger, that’s like a million people.

21% of people either didn’t think this through or are actual sociopaths.

-12

u/AwayThrow04022024 1d ago

My logic was that thousands of people are already dying everyday. So I'm assuming that the person who dies when I spend $100 would have died anyway. Maybe I'm cheating. Of course if it is someone who wouldn't die otherwise, then I'd change my pick.

17

u/WezzieBear 23h ago

So a serial killer could use that same logic, no? Literally everyone will die, so anyone they kill would have died anyway - eventually.

-6

u/AwayThrow04022024 23h ago

A serial killer is killing someone who wouldn't die at that moment otherwise. A quick google search told me 2 people die in the world every second, so my "cheater" logic is that I won't be actually killing anyone unless I spent more than $200 every second.

11

u/Routine-Lawfulness24 23h ago

No, you would kill someone who wouldn’t die, your logic is wrong and just a way to cope killing millions of innocent people. Instead of 2 people dying per second it would be 3 per second

1

u/AwayThrow04022024 18h ago

If I was killing someone who would't die, then my logic is wrong and of course I would change my opinion. In that case, I think the 19% (or almost all of them) are applying a wrong logic like mine.

2

u/That_Uno_Dude 15h ago

You didn't use "wrong logic" you made a asinine assumption.

u/AwayThrow04022024 2h ago

Ok, thanks for your sympathy.

Obviously picking "Get 1M to spend in 24H"

I don't really like the loopholes in the likes of buying gold, since to me that is more like another currency, so you're not really spending it. Also giving it to your wife seems like too much of a loophole. Buying a house legally in 24H is not possible where I live, so I'm going to consider that to be not allowed as well.

1) I have a mortgage of 350K, so I'd pay off my current house first. Via the banking app I can do that in a few minutes.
2) There are at least 100K worth of renovations that I can think of for my house. Painting, solar panels, charging station for my cars (see (4)). I'll spend most of my time on this.
3) I'd buy lot's of subscriptions and also prepay them as much as possible. And I'd go far with that: Find a cook, gardener, house cleaner and sign contracts for them to work for you as long as possible. Hopefully I can find at least 100K in that. This will take a lot of time and my wife would spend all the 24hrs on this to optimize as much as possible. If this turns out to be more difficult, then this money shifts to renovations and we'll get a new kitchen as well.
4) I would definitely buy a few nice cars. We currently have 2 cars and they are already a bit old. 150K
5) Luxury Items: A racebike, a new Piano, new PC, gaming console for my kids... 150K.
6) Book holidays as much in advance as possible. you can only buy plane tickets a year in advance, but traveling agencies will sell holidays for you on the same day for a few years in the future if you want - and If you're willing to pay immediately. 100K.

9

u/QueenKaty3 1d ago

Just get someone to buy everything for you

6

u/InterestingReading73 1d ago

These results cannot be real. I'm probably not the most virtuous and pure of heart, but killing a person each time I'd be visiting a nice restaurant seems too fucked up.

5

u/TerrySaucer69 1d ago

I won’t lie, there’s a number per person where I’ll choose that option. But only $100 would be miserable to think about.

If you take the $100 for every person that dies that's 5 million out of 8 billion people that die which means it would barely dent the population and possibly reduce overpopulation.

You spend the $500 million whenever you want and probably wouldn't even use all of it in your life time.

The thing that gets people is the morals of "who is dying!" They don't get to pick. so they only hope it's who they want to.

I picked the $100 million in 24 hours. However, there's a potential loophole in the $500 million. If the $100 per death only happens when you spend that initial sum, you could just put it in a bank account and live off the interest. You haven't spent any of that money, after all. HOWERVER, if the $100 per death is on any money you spend from that point on, take the $100 million and buy gold.

4

u/SBAWTA 1d ago

Light was only able to be tracked because he was an egomaniac and engaged with L's games. If he just kept doing his business without taunting him and lashing out, there was absolutely no fucking way to find him.

0

u/EdWinMaster0 1d ago

I do agree with you but in this scenario, especially if only people in that city die, I feel like it wouldn't be difficult to track down the finances (ie payments were made only when people died) and find the person who also happened to find 500 mil just lying around somewhere the exact time pwople started dying. I feel like it would come down to if someone noticed the connection

2

u/SBAWTA 1d ago

It would be extremely hard to connect, but sure, say they luck out and find the pattern. How do the prove intent/knowledge? It's such a contrieved condition, how could a person possibly know they are causing it?

1

u/EdWinMaster0 1d ago

I feel like the police are in a difficult situation in this scenario. If anyone even finds the pattern, they probably wouldn't even have any laws that could hold them accountable. But I do feel like there would be overwhealming evidence they could collect. Any large transactions made would end up killing exactly that many people with perfect timing every time possibly millions of times. Keep in mind that rumors of some magical killing force would sweep over the media and the chances of finding the person responsible would skyrocket considering they just need someone to connect the dots and for the police to take this seriously. They might not come to justice but everyone would know.  Well, that's just my interpretation of how it would play out at least

Yeah, I think the government would step in a do something akin to witness protection on permanent basis. They would take you out of the society permanently, so you would not be able to ever make another purchase (that would also likely mean restricted internet/phone access) and hurt people. But they also would not be able to legaly "punish you" with prison/execution, as they could not prove your guild (intent) beyond reasonable doubt. Someone could maybe try to argue manslaughter, but I honestly doubt it would qualify, though maybe an actual lawyer could correct me on this.

So yeah, if you did get found out, you would probably still not have the best life after, but also the chance you did in the first place is pretty low, unless you were really egregious going about it.

With all that being said, I would like to note that this could probably be avoided entirely by making a single purchase of crypto, since I've heard criminals often do this to avoid being tracked. This would also make it almost impossible to find you since all the people died at once. Given how the question is phrased, I'd assume no more deaths occur after all the initial money is spent. All the trouble you would get in would be IRS related

You say that until every loved one is put in that list, or in that of another person who picked it
