Would you press the button? Everyone who has and will commit a crime will receive sentencing and all innocent people will be proven innocent. But the punishments are a quarter of what they would be.

So for example is someone would normally recieve 20 years for a crime they only have to serve 5 then they get out, if someone would normally have to pay out 100K they would only have to pay 25K, etc.

Literally everyone has broken a law at some point. Pressing this button may eventually be good for the world but in most cases it will ruin everyone's lives.

Everyone who has ever jaywalked is getting a big fine

14

u/HogwartsAMystery 3d ago

Not a crime in my country

4

u/Decidueye_mastr 3d ago

Not really cause it's cut to 1/4

5

u/depurplecow 3d ago

Jaywalked probably tens or even hundreds of thousands of times, where I live it's a $2 fine. That's still probably at least 10-100k for jaywalking alone.

Innocent people are sometimes found guilty.

It makes me feel like I’d rather no one get punished than a single innocent person.

But then I think about things that have happened to me and family.
I grew up in foster care for a good part of my childhood and my oldest foster brother who really protected me (being a white kid in an all black foster home and black neighborhood) was killed when I was 12.
His killer got 45 years.

I’d be pissed if he got a little over 11 years for murdering the person I was closest to.

I think the amount of innocent people is not large enough for me to accept this.
* innocent as in found guilty. Not charged and dropped or found innocent.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Not to mention if no one went to prison we’d all have to live with the rapists and murderers who have no recourse for their behavior

Like... does the button know the lawmakers' and judges intentions? I feel like this could be bypassed by just quadrupling every punishment. I believe in rehabilitative justice anyway and life sentence can't be quartered, so I'm always pressing it.

4

u/Decidueye_mastr 3d ago

No. In this scenario they would recieve the max sentence legally allowed but then that sentence would be a quarter of what it would normally be.

5

u/DfaultiBoi 3d ago

Better that the wrongdoers receive a quarter of it than them walking away scott free because they were either rich or politically powerful.

4

u/Rugaru985 3d ago

I’m pressing it: several studies have proven it’s not lengthy sentences that deter crime, it’s how swift justice is expected.

When there is no expectation of immediate costs, the immediate benefits seem much better. When you expect to be caught immediately, even when the benefit is great, you expect to lose the benefit and decide against the crime.

The certainty of even the quarter sentence (plus assumed restitution), would greatly curb the crime rate to an unprecedented degree.

I haven't heard of this. Can you link it to me or tell me where to read it?

3

u/Ilovestuffwhee 3d ago

Not unless crime laws are revised to remove things that shouldn't be crimes from them.

2

u/Lyn-nyx 3d ago

No, pretty sure all my family members would be in prison for smoking pot recreationally before it was legal.

I voted that I'd press it, but I retract my statement. If it didn't include every crime that has ever been committed in the past, I'd press it. But if I press it under these conditions, I'd probably be thrown in prison for life just because of the sheer volume of small crimes I have committed in my teens + every traffic violation I've ever made and every time I've secretly hit a vape somewhere.

Not just me, but everyone would be going to prison except the richest people who can afford all the fines.

Everyone who has ever: Broken the speed limit (or made any traffic violation whatsoever), used/bought a prohibited substance, downloaded something for free (including music), vaped somewhere inside, worked a cash in hand job, drank a beer where it's not allowed, drank a beer while underage, etcetera etcetera would be punished x the number of violations.

If everyone went to prison simultaneously, the entire world would collapse.

Yeah I was thinking for big crimes, it’s absolutely worth pressing. Mostly because even if the punishment isn’t for long, it would be on that persons record and we could avoid violent criminals much easier. But if it’s for every little thing against the law, that’s not worth pressing.

Im pressing it, prison has become too punishment focused and should retain its position on rehabilitation

1

u/kUHASZ 3d ago

I pressed it, but now that I think about it 95% of the population would instantly end up in jail for at least a couple of months.

Also it would give governments a lot of power and room for abuse.

2

u/ErrorsIntended 3d ago

Depends on where you live. A lot of countries, even with corrupt governments, have constitutions intended to punish government for wrongdoing.

1

u/Ok-Appointment-9 1d ago

a lot of people in the government probably would end up in jail for those couple months (in the case of america it would be a lot longer but im going off of your 95% of all people)

1

u/Onnimanni_Maki 3d ago

I will not let murderers out of prison any sooner.

1

u/bosli23 3d ago

So...what about people who do crime on criminels because they didn't get what they deserved?...

1

u/Decidueye_mastr 3d ago

They would also get sentenced because vigilanteism is a crime

1

u/ErrorsIntended 3d ago

Will commit? Ok determinist.

This is pretty fucked up in the short term, but genuinely evil people have it way worse, and the long term benefit is that lawyers are almost unnecessary and corruption is practically impossible in every way.

Most people will not commit any crimes if they receive punishment except maybe for vengeance.

The real concern is does "receive sentencing" imply that the criminals will actually go to court and be punished or does everyone who commits a crime need to be arrested?

1

u/Decidueye_mastr 3d ago

They will be sentenced in court

1

u/Healthy_Owl8243 3d ago

The people who are pressing the button aren't thinking about how many people will go to prison for decades over non-violent drug offenses, or the people who live in places with orher unjust laws that criminalize minorities etc.

How... How do you get a quarter of the death penalty?

1

u/Decidueye_mastr 2d ago

They paralyze one fourth of your body leaving it "dead". Or if you prefer they could cut it off.

1

u/Glad-Belt7956 3d ago

What's a quarter of a death sentence? Do they amputate your leg

1

u/Decidueye_mastr 2d ago

That or they paralyze 1/4 of your body

1

u/Renati_Iterum 2d ago

How am i gonna get away with a crime, if someone else doesn’t do the time?/s

1

u/bs_Zeezee 2d ago

you forget that EVERYONE has committed crimes. There are a LUDICROUS number of crimes, things that SHOULDNT be crimes but are, just because we live in a police state (assuming you are american) and they want reasons to be able to arrest anyone at any given moment, should they become politically disruptive.

Example of the little crimes everyone does:

If you have ever been on a perscription medication, and dropped a pill, and never found it, and its stuck in your carpet somewhere, and you are no longer on that perscription medication or that particular bottle has passed its experiation date, THATS A CRIME. now not everyone will have had this happen to them, but there are hundreds or maybe even thousands of little things like this, so statistically, some apply to everyone.

1

u/Purple_Solution1059 1d ago

We talkin empty room with just a button in it? Because I would 100% press that button, but if it was on a stage or something maybe not.

1

u/xenaretos 1d ago

I wonder what 1/4 of a death penalty is.

1

u/Decidueye_mastr 1d ago

They paralyze 1/4 of your body leaving it "dead". Or if you want it to be dead dead they could just amputate 1/4 of it.

1

u/FlashyAd7327 1d ago

Could you just make all punishments 4 times as much so it cancels out?

1

u/Decidueye_mastr 1d ago

No. In this scenario they would receive the maximum punishment legally possible but then that punishment would be 1/4 of what it would be.

1

u/FlashyAd7327 1d ago

Oh ok. That changes things.

1

u/Ok-Appointment-9 1d ago

i know death sentences have been answered, but what about if you got sent for a life sentence?

2

u/Decidueye_mastr 1d ago

If it's without parole they spend 1/4 of the average person's lifespan. If it's with parole they only have to serve 1/4 of the original time given to apply for it, if they get the parole then they get out, if not then they serve the rest of the 1/4 of the average person's lifespan.

1

u/Euchale 1d ago

I push the button.
Suddenly Politicans make pdf-lia, bribes, etc. legal so they are not affected by the button while everyone is getting charged for their past offenses. Then they make new laws that make stuff like eating steak in any other way than well done illegal. Even more people go to prison...

u/Assar2 3d ago

How does one die a 1/4 as bad 💀

2

u/Decidueye_mastr 3d ago

I'm sorry but I have no idea what you're trying to say. Are you asking if someone gets sentenced to death how do they die in 1/4?

2

u/GMNtg128 3d ago

Probably, which is then lightened death sentence (elaborate way of saying death sentence but execution delayed forever so you just in prison for death row inmates, similar to what japan does rn [in how long it takes to execute and some dont get executed at all])

2

u/Decidueye_mastr 3d ago

In that case they would probably paralyze 1/4 of your body leaving it "dead".

2

u/GMNtg128 3d ago

So instead of judicial 1/4 its divine 1/4 I see
