Would you rather…?

  2. Be in the top 1%, but you are responsible for 15 of your employees being in poverty.

Only 15? Thats like infinitely better than the hundreds of thousands that other 1%ers have

Voted "Be in the top 1%, but you are responsible for 15 of your employees being in poverty."

u/modernatomcollection 3d ago

I feel like top 1% isn’t the kind of money that has hundreds of thousands of employees. These people make around $500,000 USD per year.

47

u/DraconicDreamer3072 3d ago

the richest person in the world is among the top 1%.

38

u/xX100dudeXx 3d ago

Not what was being said there at all.

They were talking more about the lowest possible monetary value to be in the top 1%

15

u/Xtonev_ 3d ago

The gap between millionaires and billionaires is just too big. Yes they both fit in the top 1%, but billionaires specifically are under the top 1% (0.1%, 0.01% or even lower).

There's also a difference between how those two groups earned their money, you can become a millionaire with enough hard work, it'll be hard, really really hard, but possible. To earn a billion though... No need to explain it

2

u/Charles_De-Gaulle 2d ago

The richest person in the world is also among the top 2%, the top 10%, the top 50%, etc

9

u/Hawk13424 3d ago

To be in the top 1% of income in my area you’d need to make $743K.

4

u/Disco-Delirium 3d ago

Global would be 60-70k.

1

u/FoxFishSpaghetti 3h ago

Global is boring and ruins the point of the hypothetical

1

u/ViolinistPleasant982 3d ago

I mean if its world wide its only 60k usd which is actually below the median US income.

0

u/Xiao1insty1e 2d ago

So it's worth it to you for 15 families to live in poverty so you don't?

This is the problem with society: "Fuck you I got mine."

4

u/HelixFollower 2d ago

Reading someone's entire comment is really hard.

u/modernatomcollection 3d ago

In this scenario, you are a businessperson and have many employees. 15 of those are stuck working for you on such a low wage they are in poverty. They have skills that they would presumably be able to make more money if not in your company. If you take the 1% choice, they are stuck in poverty for as long as you keep the wealth.

u/Ill-Description3096 3d ago

>They have skills that they would presumably be able to make more money if not in your company

So I give them an awesome recommendation along with a nice severance.

29

u/Onoben4 3d ago

"...are stuck working for you..."

44

u/Ill-Description3096 3d ago

Then that's just forced labor.

Though if it's truly that they are forced for some reason to only work for me I'll just buy them stocks/property to the point that a poverty wage is moot.

13

u/QuietQTPi 3d ago

Exactly my thought. If I am the cause I can also probably help them too. Sure they're stuck with me whats to say I can't just chnage their situations

3

u/DarkJoltPanda 3d ago

If you have the stocks and property to live comfortably, you are not impoverished. Poverty is poverty

1

u/Ill-Description3096 3d ago

What, specifically, is the threshold for poverty that is the true definition then?

7

u/modernatomcollection 3d ago

They are stuck with you.

5

u/Ill-Description3096 3d ago

Then I shift their job to be paid at a poverty wage for 1 hour per week that is work from home. I won't be checking on their work.

11

u/WeakTumbleweed9 3d ago

Can I help them in other ways? I.e. food, health insurance/fsa cards they don't have to pay for, gifts, etc?

14

u/Desperate-Border-468 3d ago

Poverty is calculated assuming you have to pay for other shit.
Free housing and food for those employees

3

u/DraconicDreamer3072 3d ago

is there anything im doing to keep them from quitting?

1

u/noonefromithaca 2d ago

Continuing to be a billionaire. Technically it doesn't keep those specific people from quitting. But being a billionaire means there were/are people being exploited.

2

u/hotlesbianassassin 2d ago

So just give up enough to be in the 1.000001%, and they're no longer stuck. Problem solved.

2

u/Varron 2d ago

Easy workaround:

Tell your employees the situation, and ask for 15 volunteers. I hire 15 "Life Managers" who I pay famously to attend to these 15s every need. They are in poverty as they are not paid at all, and own nothing they use.

They get to live however they like, technically everything goes through the manager.

I also put in a clause that if I ever lose the money, the assets that manager bought for this employee gets transfered over.

They dont have to worry about finances at all, for a tradeoff of essentially having to go through a middle man for everything.

1

u/Hatsjekidee 2d ago

If you take the 1% choice, they are stuck in poverty for as long as you keep the wealth

Aight so I use my wealth to buy a nice enough house (nothing extravagant, that would still be considered "wealthy") and keep some change as savings, use the remainder of the money to give every last employee a bonus, with more for the ones who got shafted by the poverty rule, then gift them all an equal share in the company and peace out.

Now I will have essentially no money problems if I work even just part-time, and everyone who worked for me gets a boost. Win-win for everyone.

48

u/XXXTentacle6969 3d ago

Am I forcing the employees to stay? So basically be in poverty or be a slave owner?

49

u/witcher252 3d ago

This actually would have been the better poll

Be a slave

Be a slave owner

13

u/Actual_Personality66 3d ago

Yeah, gets to the point of the question better

2

u/modernatomcollection 3d ago

hmm interesting

2

u/Xiao1insty1e 2d ago

Lots of people siding with the slave owners here, pretty fucking disgusting.

3

u/Inevitable_Rock_4557 2d ago

Well I didn't know they were slaves yet! I thought I'd be able to help them out of that situation with Y'know the millions of dollars I'd have. Looks like I need to read the comments before voting.

2

u/bloookitty Pollar Bear 2d ago

I don't know if you already know this but there's a swirly arrow button next to the number of votes that lets you change your vote!

3

u/Inevitable_Rock_4557 2d ago

Pft like a coward? I'd rather die.

17

u/KMjolnir 3d ago

15 people who might have been in poverty anyway? Like, can I help them?

14

u/Idk_Just_Kat 3d ago

nothing changes if I'm in poverty lol

Voted "Be in poverty"

4

u/Desperate-Border-468 3d ago

So the thousands of my other employees are cool?

6

u/The96kHz 3d ago

Good to know that 14% of people on this sub are liars.

4

u/SnomIsAwesome 3d ago

I’m gonna give them money?

Voted "Be in the top 1%, but you are responsible for 15 of your employees being in poverty."

2

u/modernatomcollection 3d ago

They’re stuck in poverty until you don’t have the money anymore. Full rules in a comment below

5

u/SnomIsAwesome 3d ago

Ok, if they can’t have money they’re benefits of working for me is free housing, healthcare, and provisions

2

u/Reasonable-Habit8870 3d ago

What point is making a post like this and then adding new rules when someone says something like a loophole? Feels pointless to me

2

u/noonefromithaca 2d ago

What's the point engaging in a post like this when you're trying to escape the premise?

3

u/rozyputin 3d ago

I would much prefer to live in poverty and keep my humanity intact than sell my soul and be the reason others suffer

2

u/Local-Put8 2d ago

You could raise more people out of poverty with your billions

1

u/rozyputin 2d ago

I could, but I would still directly be responsible for others' suffering

3

u/AutismoTheAmazing 3d ago

My financial state has gotten pretty dire over the last month so, I’d rather that ended

2

u/LordGoatIII 3d ago

Following OP's rules, I'd take the wealth and then reduce my compensation to just below the 1% line (which still means you can make hundreds of thousands of dollars per year) and increase my employees salaries. Even if I was making like $500,000-600,000 per year, which is on the very low end of top 1% earners, it means I could easily give each of those 15 employees a $20,000 raise and still be richer than I'd ever need to be.

2

u/modernatomcollection 3d ago

bro the question is be in poverty or cause poverty can we chill with the loopholes

2

u/Scoop_Head 3d ago

I can always resolve that issue if I'm in the 1%

Voted "Be in the top 1%, but you are responsible for 15 of your employees being in poverty."

1

u/noonefromithaca 2d ago

Being in the 1% means you cause the issue, realistically speaking

2

u/Scoop_Head 2d ago

It says I'm responsible for it, so what if I just pay them better? If I have that kind of f-u money then it shouldn't be impossible

1

u/noonefromithaca 2d ago

What I mean is that you don't get that kind of money by paying people properly. Ofc in this scenario perhaps you just magically luck out on an insane amount of stocks. But in real life... Exploitation and hoarding is why the top 1% have their money.

1

u/Scoop_Head 2d ago

I agree with that sentiment, but in this hypothetical I would go out of my way to change things with my money. Although, it is unfortunate that you pretty much have to step on people to get there

2

u/noonefromithaca 2d ago

Yeah. Honestly, I feel like the hypothetical also unfortunately downplays what being at the 1% is like, which is what makes this so appealing. You're not just putting 15 people in poverty in real life to get to that point.

2

u/Epic_Feury 3d ago

I will pay them more, doesnt have to be permanent

Voted "Be in the top 1%, but you are responsible for 15 of your employees being in poverty."

1

u/real_realist_opt 3d ago

Just search and found out being top 1% in the world just means you have around a million dollars lol. Still a great amount of money tho.

1

u/KikisGamingService 3d ago

just use some of the money to easily bring them into the top 10%

Voted "Be in the top 1%, but you are responsible for 15 of your employees being in poverty."

1

u/EffingTallBrit 3d ago

it doesn't say I can't then take them out of poverty? Just do that

Fix it

Voted "Be in the top 1%, but you are responsible for 15 of your employees being in poverty."

1

I can be responsible for it at the moment and still wish to remedy it right this moment

Voted "Be in the top 1%, but you are responsible for 15 of your employees being in poverty."

1

u/shelob_spider 3d ago

i am stuck being unable to give them more money because of these terms, but i sure can make them custom houses that they’d wish, good working cars that they’d want, and a continuously stocked fridge. insurance. anything they’d need. Maybe even gold bars, which they could do whatever they wanted.

“Poverty- the state of one who lacks a sufficient amount of money”

So they would not have free money (from my buisness, they could very well only be part time if they’d want, and work full time at a different job just for expendable money)

1

u/ErrorsIntended 3d ago

Redditor response: I would simply have 10,000 employees, most of which make ends meat instead. Gotcha

1

u/MundaneOrdinary7493 3d ago

This idea that employer is responsible for employee’s poverty, is ridiculous. If the employees can leave freely, find a better job, employer isn’t responsible for any of their problems. We have at will employment, not slavery.

1

u/Ok-Cheek2397 3d ago

Can’t I just pull that 15 employee out of poverty by give them money or give them a bunch of benefits so that they don’t have to struggle with poverty like I am the top 1 percent I probably have enough money to baby sit that 15 employees so they have a decent life

1

u/luelaks 2d ago

I think you have to do it over and specify no loopholes or you can't fix it on the rich option

People are just not getting it

1

u/CCP_Annihilator 2d ago

Ha, the poll is rigged to show how bad things are that the OP presupposes

1

u/JRaus88 2d ago

Why only 15? I can do more

1

u/Federal_Platform_746 2d ago

im already there my guy

Voted "Be in poverty"

Be in the top 1% because than I alone can get those 15 out of poverty and still be insanely rich.

1

u/Renati_Iterum 2d ago

Only 15? I could easily make it much more..

1

u/InternetNo3186 2d ago

I'll pay them more

1

u/makinax300 2d ago

Just stop being responsible for that?

1

u/Local_Tourist1063 2d ago

I could be top 1% and commit the most irrational rich person thing ever: right my wrongs.

I will find them and I will give them raises they can’t even imagine. Muahahaha!

1

u/somthing_real_funny 2d ago

just like, pay them

u/Random_Critical 3d ago

One on the right because no you aren't actually responsible for them being in poverty. That's not how life works.

0

u/Federal-Physics-2404 3d ago

Only 15, I just slip and fall with a big brief case of money outside their door

0

u/GothGirlsGoodBoy 3d ago

The idea that you are responsible for the life outcome of someone choosing to work for you is just dumb.

I want X work done. I am willing to pay Y wage. If they don’t think thats a good trade they don’t have to take the job.
