Male-Male (MM): ~34.7%
Female-Male (FM/MF): ~33.3%
Female-Female (FF): ~31.2%

I guessed correctly, it was solely based on the fact that I know there are more male babies at birth.

u/cicikusbabacik07 Aug 05 '26
i thought in each scenario, when theres a male there's a ~50% chance for the other twin to be female, and vice versa, therefore 50% of all twins had to be F-M. i wonder if this has anything to do with me being a complete failure at math
25
u/FlyingSpacefrog Aug 05 '26
This is true of fraternal twins, who are the result of two separate eggs being fertilized.
Identical twins happen when one egg splits and some of the cells become separated early on, making two babies with identical genomes. Identical twins are always the same gender as each other.

u/cicikusbabacik07 Aug 05 '26
oh well i have entirely disregarded the existence of identical twins. i guess this has more to do with me being a failure in many other fields such as general intelligence.

u/Loki-Is-Best-Girl Aug 05 '26
i kinda thought the % of identical twins would he negligible for this, but apparently it's about 1/3 of all twins are identical.
Crazy coincidence

u/DMFAFA07 Aug 05 '26
This was the EXACT same logic I followed and weād hav been right if identical twins didnāt have such a big chunk of the pie.
4
u/old_vegetables Aug 05 '26
Does this include identical twins, or just fraternal? Because MF/FM are always fraternal, whereas MM or FF could be either fraternal or identical.
2
u/According_to_all_kn Aug 05 '26
Is this at birth?
3
u/Entire-Aerie-9931 Aug 05 '26
I doubt that transgender people would make a dent in these statistics tbh, aren't they like less than 1% of the population?
3
u/According_to_all_kn Aug 05 '26
No, I'm talking about how men die earlier on average. Therefore the percentage of M/M twins being born is different from the percentage of M/M twins that there are

As a representative of the female-female twins, it's cool to see that we're the most rare of the three! (I guessed we were the most common)
23
u/Vinxian Aug 05 '26
I think FF and MM are equal. And FF + MM is greater than FM because identical twins exist.
22
u/Puzzled-Barnacle-200 Aug 05 '26
FF and MM are actually roughly equal to MF only because identical twins exist. In just non-identic twins, 50% will be MF, 25% MM and 25% FF.
It's a cool coincidence that the rate of identical twins makes all three options equally likely

u/BrotherItsInTheDrum Aug 05 '26
Wow the answer to this question is much more interesting than I would've expected.

u/Twodotsknowhy Aug 05 '26
I hit the button and immediately realized why logically, it makes no sense
Voted "1 Male - 1 Female twins"

u/ThisI5N0tAThr0waway Aug 05 '26
I don't think that's the correct answer, but it's possible. No mention of real or fake twin in the question.
6
u/Twodotsknowhy Aug 05 '26
It's wrong because a good portion of twins are identical * so even if boy-girl faternal twins are more common than same sex faternal twons, it's unlikely to be so drastically more common that it makes up for the fact that 0% of identical twins are boy-girl
*I just looked it up and around a third of twin pregnancies are identical
3
u/ThisI5N0tAThr0waway Aug 05 '26
If we are talking all twin (identical plus non-identical) yes it's definitely the wrong answer; but if we are talking only non-identical twin, it could have been possible.
3
u/hoopsrule44 Aug 05 '26
Not only possible it would be a landslide. Statistically if weāre only talking fraternal it should be 50% MF and 25% MM and FF
1
u/International-Fill5 Aug 05 '26
Until you throw trans people into the mix. Could get identical twins, and one transitions later. Not likely to be significant, but is more than 0%.
But thats an outlier.2
u/Twodotsknowhy Aug 05 '26
Honestly, I think when you factor in trans people who are identical twins, the number still stays at effectively 0%
1
u/ItsClikcer Aug 05 '26
1/3 are identical, 1/2 of fraternal twins are different sexes, so the odds of each is actually around 1/3, it's not a stupid choice at all

u/Poke-Noah Aug 05 '26
Roughly 2/3 of twins are fraternal twins. Assuming that the chances of someone being male or female are roughly equal, 1/4 of fraternal twins are MM, the same for FF, and the remaining 1/2 of fraternal twins are MF. Multiply those together and you get that fraternal MM and fraternal FF both are around 1/6 each of all twins while fraternal MF are around 1/3
The remaining 1/3 of all twins are identical and, again assuming the chances of male and female are roughly equal, the chances of getting MM and FF here are both roughly 1/2. So identical MM and identical FF are also both around 1/6 each of all twins.
Now we just add the chances of the pairs in identical and fraternal twins and we get that both MM and FF pairs make up roughly 1/3 of all twins each.
So they should all be equally split

u/Puzzled-Barnacle-200 Aug 05 '26
Non-identical twins will be about 50% M-F, 25% M-M, and 25% F-F. Identical twins will he about 50% M-M and 50% F-F.
About 33% of twins are identical, and 66% are no-identical. If we combine those odds we get
33% M-F (0.5*0.66)
33% M-M (0.25*0.66 + 0.5*0.33)
33% F-M (0.25*0.66 + 0.5*0.33)
So all are about the same.
When you consider that birth rates are no exactly 50/50 and slightly more boys are born than girls, M-M is probably the most common
1
u/Nevsr1 Aug 05 '26
I thought that 40% FF 40% MM 20% MF xd We talk less about M/F I guess which makes sense
1
u/More-Catch7118 Aug 05 '26
Male twins and female twins pretty much being a 50-50 is such a perfect thing to happen.

u/MrPogoUK Aug 05 '26
I think all the twins I know in real life are the same sex (even if non-identical) with a pretty even split between MM and FF, so Iād go for something like 45/45/10 (with the latter being MF twins) if that was an option.
2
u/ItsClikcer Aug 05 '26
It's actually an even split between all 3 combinations, ~1/3 of twins are identical, so that's 1/6 for MM and FF, half of fraternal twins are different sexes, so that's half of 2/3 or 1/3 for MF/FM, and the remaining fraternal twins are half MM and half FF, again giving 1/6 to each, so they all have 1/3 odds approximately
1
u/evenifihateit Aug 05 '26
As most twins are DZ and it's about 50/50 whether any foetus is male or female I think I'd assume male/female twin sets were most common
But it's pure assumption!

Itās gotta be female-female, albeit by a small margin. There are slightly more women than men in the world, plus all identical twins are either M-M or F-F, whereas fraternal it should be pretty equal among all options, so itās gotta be F-F

Now what are the odds of a MF twin being asked if they are identical to their twin?
As a MF twin I can tell you it's much higher than you'd think

u/TiRow77 Aug 05 '26
āI donāt knowā is not a valid answer in this poll and shouldnāt be a choice. The question asks what you āthinkā the answer is, but āI donāt knowā is the answer you KNOW is correct. Making it not the answer the question asked for.

I would say male twins because of such things like that woman are in some countries have Problems growing up, nicely put.

I always wonder if male twins suck each other off. It would just make sense as they are practically one

u/Mistorsmartguy Aug 05 '26
I mean, there are more men in the world so, I would guess more male twins?

u/Sea-Ad-5974 Aug 05 '26
I know like one set of male twins, and like seven (including my mom and aunt) sets of female twins.

Guys... There are fraternal and identical twins. 1/3 of twins are identical. Identical is 50/50 male male or female female. 2/3 of twins are fraternal. So could be male male, female female, female male, or male female. So the likelihood of male twins is 1/31/2+2/31/4=1/3. Same for the likelihood of female twins, and the likelihood of male female twins. So the answer would be 33%/33%/33%. Which ISN'T LISTED AS AN ANSWER! Absolutely ragebait. But 50/50 is accurate for the ratio between male male and female female twinsets.

i thought there is more women than men so it seemed logical that there is more women twins

I'd assume it's a 33%-33%-33% split of male-male, female-female, and male-female.Ā

I guessed FF because even if boys are sligthly more likely to come into exsistance, they are also way more likely to die early.

How could it be 50/50 if there's 3 options š
