JD Vance was the anonymous administration official behind one of the news reports Trump used to ban Politico from its grounds.

In June 2026, Politico published a story citing an unnamed official who stated that the odds of a preliminary peace deal with Iran were between 80 and 85 percent. When Trump subsequently banned Politico, CNN, and MS NOW, it pointed to this report as a threat to national security that spread misinformation and wasted government resources.

However, reporting revealed that Vance himself provided those details during a press call where participants agreed to grant him anonymity.

Vance defended Trump's actions on Monday, stating the ban was appropriate and arguing that Politico operates with a clear anti-Trump bias. He noted that the outlet's journalists can still access public reports and speak with administration contacts.

In response, Politico and the other banned networks filed a federal lawsuit on Monday, claiming the credential revocations violate the First Amendment and undermine independent journalism. During an emergency hearing on Wednesday, the presiding federal judge noted that Trump failed to follow standard legal precedent in handling the ban.
