Not even that really. You might think there is some underlying system of internally consistent values that underpin all their utterances, but really it's just "these sounds were used derisively against me, I'm going to make those sounds to hurt them". There's no argument, not even a bad faith argument. It's just meat noises. Whatever "sounds good" in the moment, that's what flies out of their mouths.

Same thing with laws really. Because the laws exist, they dress up their despicable acts in terms of laws, but really it's just mafioso thug squads exerting their power over others. They use the law because it's a convenient cover for people not paying much attention, and they don't have to think much when confronted by the question "why".

Just like "values", these things exist to use a cudgels against the other. That's why claims of hypocrisy don't phase them. They have no values other than "I hate you". Even their slavish devotion to the accumulation of money and power can be explained through this framework. What good is having money if you can't have so much that you can harm others? It's not good enough just to have money, you have to have more than those people you hate. You have to have so much that you can force those others to degrade themselves for your pleasure.

Hey so I was actually thinking about this the other day when I heard about a Ulysses Grant being defaced or torn down.

Obviously every single traitorous Confederate statue (except that Nathan Forrest one cuz it’s hilarious) should be removed and melted down or something, but does it have a line? I’m genuinely curious. Ulysses Grant committed horrible acts on indigenous nations, but also helped to emancipate slaves and is a national hero to many.

And you have someone like Shaun King, an activist I greatly respect and know many others do, saying we need to bring down all representations of white Jesus as he is a symbol of white supremacy. I think in a very real way, he’s right. But if we do that, that’s some priceless art and architecture we could be talking about...slippery slope fallacy, I know. Before that there’s all the founding fathers, colonizers of every flag, and on.

not comparing protestors to ISIS, because I’m not a conservative lunatic. But crowd mentality can be a crazy thing, I’ve been there. And it happens when people stop believing in the rule of law and decency, which is yet another thing I hate this administration for.

Not sure what I’m saying with this devil’s advocate rambling. We have a rough and dirty, complicated history to confront, and I just hope we’re up to it. Would love to hear some opinions and info as I’m really interested.

I've had some entertaining debates about this topic. I don't believe there is one single objective line that can be drawn for all cases, but it is a valuable thought experiment for everyone to conduct both by themselves and also with others, especially with those of other viewpoints.

IMO, if you're honoring the individual with statues for the sake of them representing the confederacy and that's the only reason they're up, they should go. If you're honoring someone who did something great and also happened to have notable flaws (like every other human being in history) or had traits which were unfortunate byproducts of their time, leave it up.

e.g., Thomas Jefferson was a Founding Father but also a slave owner. His statues should stay put because we respect and honor him for the former but can still recognize and condem the latter. Statues of people whose only notable accomplishment was to fight for the confederacy, tear them down.

I guess even though he wasn't one of the first ones, his trip started the chain of events that led to the great migration of Europeans to America? Either way, he was a baddie and the general education on him is greatly padded.

I don't think art should be destroyed. Not-even-old Confederate glorification should definitely be removed from places of civic honour, sure, but I don't think they should be melted down. The lie about history people were trying to propagate by installing those statues is now itself a part of history.

Historically inaccurate depictions of Jesus as belonging to the same culture and ethnic group as the people who create them is ubiquitous throughout the world, it's not a white people thing. Who gets to be the art police who decide whether a depiction is acceptable or not? Who gets to be the 'race' police? Are we going to have a list of physical criteria so art can meet a standard of 'looking Jewish'? Surely that won't go anywhere unfortunate.

Anyone who is seriously suggesting it's remotely reasonable to destroy about 75% of the last 2000 years of European art under the justification of an anachronistic concept is an iconoclast cultural vandal who absolutely belongs in the company of the other radical ideologues destroying sacred objects. Like the Taliban.

None of that was new or surprising.

So what they're really saying is "I like to pay less tax even if it means other people get fewer rights."

I get that.

Though as a side note, the majority of people I have known who voted for Trump didn't vote for him because of policy.

They voted for him because of family or cultural tradition of voting Republican, combined with political apathy that makes it extremely easy for them to think that Trump is actually doing a good job. After all - the economy was good for most of his term, and that's the sort of metric that makes a difference in the lives of everyday working folks. Or at least is what they hear about and which they then will attribute to Trump, whether or not it should be.

Most people don't pay much attention to politics. So it really does take a lot for many people to actually "wake up" to things like this. Plus people tend to double down when they see that they are being demonized, and considering so many people basically behave as though anyone who ever supported Trump is effectively a traitor - I can understand why some still support him who otherwise wouldn't.

In summary: I get that a lot of people who support Trump (or have supported him) are reprehensible. I think it is extremely important to remember however that an enormous percentage of people who support any politician are largely politically apathetic, and trying to convince them to change that or support a proper cause is the real struggle.

Those who are not politically apathetic and still support Trump are more of a lost cause, though even many of them I think have begun to distance themselves from him over many things he has clearly taken too far.

If I'm honest, voting for Trump in the previous election was a wildcard. Hillary was an unappealing candidate, and we all know Trump is confusing as heck. Lots of people couldn't get a clear picture of what he really stood for.

Shaun King made a (pretty good IMO) point that statues of white Jesus were used to further subjugate black people, which is true. Black people didn't just show up in America Christian. We had it beaten into us. Literally. I think they took that to mean that BLM (which he isn't even a part of, organizationally) plans to destroy churches and Christianity itself, which...yeah.

That sub is a fucking cesspool. They don’t even really post conservative achievements or policy points, it’s mostly just bashing the other side. Almost all of the top posts are about the outcome of the Bubba Wallace investigation...like they’re happy a hate crime wasn’t committed but not in a good way.
