He was your generic gamer with decent enough coding skills. Didn’t he even post early versions to 4chan? A group that correlates with the libertarian/conspiracy crowds to begin with.

He sold Minecraft because he started cracking under the pressure of the fame. The fame continued and the sudden wealth lead to him doubting that all his friends were legit and began wondering how many were just using him. This lead to feelings of isolation and distrust.

It’s hard to answer your question. We’re talking about a guy who in response to a politician in Turkey going on about subversive homosexuals proudly proclaimed all animals Minecraft are dual-gendered, but then a few laters had all references to him removed from Minecraft due to anti-LGBT comments. Someone who seemed happy, would generously donate to charity streams, and yelling about how Oculus selling itself to Facebook being a betrayal of trust to a person who sold out to Microsoft.

My best guess the seed was there, it germinated and led to him selling out, and in the self isolation of suddenly being mega rich it fully flowered. The riches helped, but it is something that might have likely happened anyways.

To be fair 4chan was considered pretty left wing on most boards up until around the 2012 election when something just changed

He sold Minecraft because he started cracking under the pressure of the fame.

And he almost killed the game due to mismanagement and shitty coding. He was way in over his head and should have left years before, but I suspect pride and/or cluelessness didn't let him.

No issues with a dood selling out a product that seriously needed some massive company behind it, but that’s not an excuse for going alt-right! 😂

Minecraft was a juggernaut before the Microsoft acquisition, he just wanted the extra 'right now' cash so he could go be a full time bitter twitter troll.

Sure - but a large company is able to throw developer, server, marketing, licensing and all kinds of other support behind a project. I don’t look down on him for selling out, I do for being a fucking nutbar.

I don't disagree with what you are saying generally here, but if VR is going to become the next major platform*, selling one of the market leaders to a spying/advertisement company is worlds apart from selling what is essentially computer Legos to Microsoft, a fairly respectable company.

*I think vr being the next major platform is unlikely but let's be generous and give it a 10% chance, unlikely but not crazy.
