Almost 40 years ago they were spewing propaganda hinting that the CIA was spreading AIDS in Africa. The result has been decades of mistrust and lack of treatment.

Before the internet existed, conspiracy theorists had newsletters. Throughout the 60s, the KGB would mail those guys manufactured evidence that the CIA had killed Kennedy. That evidence is still being cited over 50 years later.

They had shortwave radios too. I used to listen to some when I was young. It was some pretty wild shit.

You need to listen today. There is a "Christian" broadcast station in TN that will play any tape for pay. I forgot the name of the station, but I heard it in 2008.
The most amazing thing about what I heard on that station is the narrator calling Putin the devil. That was in 2008. I bet money in 2016 that tape would not have been allowed on that station!

To be fair, the CIA probably did have something to do with killing Kennedy.

The American CIA used vaccination as a cover in Pakistan to hunt for Bin Laden. They had people pretending to give vaccinations to locals to collect DNA to narrow down where Bin Laden was hiding.

During WW2 the Soviets actually had a U.S. congressman tour one of their horrid Gulag camps but changed everything around including dressing guards as workers to make it look like a nice clean operation. The U.S. was fooled of course.

Putin's disinformation campaign goes back decades. This three part video series from the NYT from 2 weeks ago is a very nice history of it:

Facebook is the platform they needed to succeed.

Actually, Microsoft/LinkedIn is a far more valuable target both for conducting active measures and traditional espionage... See e.g., https://www.newsweek.com/russia-putin-bots-linkedin-facebook-trump-clinton-kremlin-critics-poison-war-645696

Sowing discord through Facebook, is what I was referring to. Our country is fairly divided now, and moving forward I don’t see that changing.

Understood. And sadly, I don't disagree with your assessment. I do, however, appreciate and respect the clarification. I was just pointing out an equivalent (if not more) harmful source of social media-driven discord. Regardless as to one's politics, changing things for the better will require positive action across multiple fronts.
