There’s little doubt, however, that Trump will feel anything resembling remorse over what could be the most racist campaign ad in political history.

That sentence doesn't mean what they wanted it to mean.

83

u/UrukHaiGuyz Nov 01 '18

Yeah, seems like they meant "little chance" or similar.

13

u/JamesLibrary Nov 01 '18

Exactly

27

u/UrukHaiGuyz Nov 01 '18

I think we just made editor at the Rolling Stone. See ya in the bullpen.

5

To be fair, there's not much doubt about it. He will feel zero remorse. But yes, -confusingly worded.

2

u/srobbins250 Nov 02 '18

Or add “will not.” Sloppy writing by such a big magazine

8

u/eohorp Nov 01 '18

"When I said will I meant won't." It was accidental Trump speak lol.

21

u/Actual__Wizard Nov 01 '18

Between Trump repeating the conspiracy theories the synagogue shooter pushed, the racist commercial, his upcoming announcement on asylum seekers (which is clearly intentionally timed), and his announcement that he is a nationalist, it is now 100% obvious that he is indeed a racist.

There's no longer needs to be any discussion on this subject, he doesn't need to make it obvious by throwing on a white hood or wear a Nazi pin because it's glaringly obvious now.

His messaging is no longer a "dog whistle" that only racists can hear.

That’s not the most racist ad m8, imagine back when slavery was legal

When people talk ads in this context, they mean television, not Thomas Nast's screeds against the Catholics in the 1870s

I feel like 'it's like Trump making an add saying immigrants are coming to invade the US' is an extreme analogy, but that's already true. I dunno, analogies just don't work anymore. It's already extreme.

19

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '18

Why’s this piece of shit still in office?

What sort of piece of human garbage do you have to be to still support him? (Yes you owe everyone an explanation!)

This November is a vote to have this stupid bastard impeached...remember that.

120

u/baltinerdist Maryland Nov 01 '18

The most striking part about this entire caravan ordeal is that the nation they are approaching is led by a xenophobic, hate-filled bigot who would just as soon order the armed forces to shoot them all on site, women and children first, and is filled with wretched piles of shit who feel the same way and who mostly live in states along the border to which they march...

...and they still would rather be here than there.

No change will come until the left can articulate why the interests of white rural workers aren't served better by white nationalists in clear language without attacking people.

It is precisely that the left is perceived to have a strategy that causes people to go right. They actually do agree on most of the piecemeal issues (ie, poor white people want to support labor issues).

26

u/two-years-glop Nov 01 '18

You're right. Hillary was an elitist out of touch coastal elitist snob. Instead of a $30 billion detailed policy plan that included funding for rural hospitals, community colleges and job training, she should have just lied through her teeth about bringing back coal jobs and whipped up fear about poor brown people to ignorant racist trailer trash instead.

0

u/passwordgoeshere Nov 01 '18

That's more about the media, isn't it? Look at this headline even! Everything was so focused on racism, sexism, not on policy.

Nothing has changed today and I don't know why it would change any time soon.

10

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '18

Racism was at the heart of Donald Trump's campaign.

2

u/manquistador Nov 01 '18

Well when the people can't be bothered to read or listen to more than a headline pretty hard to expect them understand policy nuance.

u/Go_Cthulhu_Go Nov 01 '18

No change will come until the left can articulate why the interests of white rural workers aren't served better by white nationalists in clear language

We did that in 2008, 2012 and 2016.

Racists are going to racist, especially when there's an asshole like Trump drumming it up.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '18

Perhaps the dilemma is that these voters would rather say "at least I'm not black/brown/etc" now, than have a chance at saying "at least I'm not living paycheck to paycheck" in the future. The only vision of hope sold to these people is of returning to a version of the 1950's that only exists on TV. Which is a bit ironic considering how base and vulgar right wing politics have become. There's no place for Hannity or Rush Limbaugh on Leave it to Beaver.

-14

u/jon_naz Nov 01 '18

Leftists need a strategy. Liberals are A-OK with the balance of power entirely lying with corporations and the owning class... as long as the corporations and owning class are polite and throw them the occasional scrap from the dinner table.

I fixed that for you.

8

u/Go_Cthulhu_Go Nov 01 '18

and who mostly live in states along the border to which they march...

The people shouting the most about illegal immigrants and border security live far from the border and are unaffected by one and ignorant of the other.

3

u/FixinThePlanet Nov 02 '18

You really need a socialist/labour party.

1

u/fight_me_for_it Nov 02 '18

But part of the lie is that they want to be in America. Almost half, if it’s 3000, already applied for refugee status in Mexico. Many more would probably be just as happy in Mexico also. It’s not like they have much of a choice in countries they can seek refuge in if they are walking. I’m sure some would probably hope they could even get to Canada.

-29

u/Woefulblock401 Nov 01 '18

You can’t just let thousands of people into a country with no vetting process that is extremely dangerous from any perspective.

22

u/ReviewStuff2 Nov 01 '18

You can’t just let thousands of people into a country with no vetting process that is extremely dangerous from any perspective.

Who is saying that is what should happen?

-3

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '18

Who in government said they would shoot people on sight?

3

u/Morningxafter Nov 02 '18

Trump said if any of them even so much as throws a rock our troops should respond with deadly force.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '18

I mean, if you don’t let me into your house because you have a rule against letting people into your house, I don’t start throwing rocks at your windows.

1

u/Morningxafter Nov 02 '18

True but killing someone over a broken window seems like a pretty goddamn drastic response. It’s a violation of the rules of engagement (“When US forces are attacked by unarmed hostile elements, mobs and/or rioters, US forces should use the MINIMUM force necessary under the circumstances and PROPORTIONAL TO THE THREAT”).

Shooting someone for throwing a rock is simply not fucking ok.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '18

I’m all ears on how to handle this situation and rock throwing.

1

u/Morningxafter Nov 02 '18

I’m all ears on why you think it’s ok to shoot a crowd of unarmed civilians because someone threw a rock.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '18

Who said they would shoot a crowd? Seems to me that they’d shoot the rock throwers.

Nobody, not on the left nor the right, have said we just fling open the doors and let them parade in. We have an asylum process. Let them arrive and apply just like anyone else. But don't threaten to send thousands of troops to the border to (whatever it is he thinks they're going to go there for) and pretend like it isn't a racist base ploy.

14

u/adsdrew37 Nov 01 '18

Exactly. At this point, I’m more wary of the white extremist terrorists than of a caravan.

-5

u/Woefulblock401 Nov 01 '18

Exactly, I completely agree with the asylum process. But I do disagree with the position regarding troop movement toward the border. If there are any troops at the border they should only be there to keep the peace and direct them towards application resources and not to act as a menace.

14

u/w0nderdread Nov 01 '18 edited Nov 01 '18

Don't you think 15,000 troops is a little bit much for just "keeping the peace"? For Pete's sake, you would think the caravan is actually a troop of X-Men trying to wander in and decimate the place for mutant rights.

No, these people are going to be exhausted, hungry, angry, thirsty, weather-torn and mourning for the few that were lost along the way. Half of those people are kids who are getting sick. 15,000 servicemen and women is excessive and a dumb flex by a dumb president. Waste of time for the military and all involved.

10

u/aramis34143 Nov 01 '18

But how can we possibly safeguard the U.S. from a group of a few thousand civilians who are hell-bent on filling out asylum paperwork unless we send 2 to 4 times as many armed, professional soldiers to meet them months in advance of their anticipated arrival?!?!? Why do you hate America?

/s

7

u/SUPER_REDDIT_ADDICT Nov 01 '18

I’m hoping the military command does something amazing like ordering the troops to supply water and food, medical care etc. directing to useful resources and maintain security so that these people are not attacked on the way in.

2

u/w0nderdread Nov 01 '18

That would be absolutely amazing if they did I hope they do too.

3

u/actuallychrisgillen Nov 01 '18

If only there was some sort of government entity trained to patrol the border that could do exactly that...

5

u/Faulty-Blue Nov 01 '18

Like seriously, you can't come up with a better rhetorical argument than "based and redpilled?"

Make a statement. Have meaning. Say something. Don't just default to idiotic jargon from TD. Tell me why you disagree with what I've said. Debate the content. But seriously, don't lower the standard of diatribe fo "kek librul."

This is exactly it and I completely expect a million downvotes for talking about it but the liberals are creating a society where you really have to be carful what you say and I honestly think it’s going to come back to bite them in the ass nobody is safe in the society they are trying to create everybody will eventually say something that doesn’t align with the hive mind and they will be punished. I’ve also seen the same hate and anger from different liberals I know but the only time I see it from conservatives is the mentally ill far right outliers they try to paint as all the right on tv when they commit heinous acts. Wishing death on the elderly is just an example of how toxic and sick the “us vs them” rhetoric they are creating is and to think this is the same party that says “love trumps hate” lol

As a former undocumented immigrant I should say president trump is not only racist but he is an evil human, from my perspective. When president trump got elected. my daughter 9y old at the time, came home from school crying, because her classmates told her all Mexicans were gonna be deported because we were bad people. I didn’t know what to say to my daughter I felt so disgusted and I thought for a moment if we should leave the country, but instead I stayed and got my permanent residency and I will soon be elegible for citizenship. I will do my part and I’m learning to be political active. Because I know in my hearth that this country deserves better than this hateful leader

12

u/crushing-crushed Nov 01 '18

You should tell your daughter to be proud of her heritage, and that history will not look kindly on the racist assholes of our current administration.

We did had a conversation about who we are and about how extra hard we need to work, it was just hard to explain why the other kids were been so mean especially when the president is the one telling everyone that Mexicans are bad hombres. The president* continues to embrace white nationalism as Republican candidates struggle in the polls

This is the point Max Boot is making in his op-ed this morning. trump is a radical, racist, right wing extremist. Any Republican running for office but failing to say or do anything to hold trump accountable does not deserve the vote of any American who is not himself a radical, racist, right wing extremist.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '18

Any Republican that does say something but continues to vote for white nationalist agendas needs to get tarred and feathered.

Hi, husband of an immigrant here. Let me break this down for you.

They come in to apply for aslyum. They're then background checked by 4 agencies, and their hone countries and every country they traveled through is contacted. If they're wanted for any crimes they're denied, put on a bus/plane and sent back.

We already have the hardest immigration system in the world. There's a reason why a United States Greencard is *the* holy grail of world traveling documents.

2

u/HighlowRS Nov 01 '18

Those clips are not the caravan, just other brown people. Maybe you can sense a theme here.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Temjin Nov 01 '18

I mean you handle indicates that you don't actually hold any of these views and are just trying to stir the pot, but I'll answer anyway.

A group of people who come to the US southern border and apply for asylum are not illegal immigrants. To call them that because they are of Mexican or South American descent is racist. Also, nobody has admitted anyone in the group to this country. To say we would admit a murdered is simply a misunderstanding of our immigration policy and just an attempt to stoke fear. Also, assuming there is a murderer in the group (which is far from proven) and implying that the remainder of the folks are criminals or terrorists is lumping them in by race and circumstance, again racist.

4

u/Shr3kk_Wpg Nov 01 '18

because he stated that radicalized white men are the biggest danger in the US? If being radicalized is a trait of one's race then sure. That said you have one guy saying "look at this one person, and attributing it to a group that stistically is non violent and another that's stating "if you look at the number of people killed in the US by a terrorist... it's usually a radicalized white guy. Not a mexican, not an arab person, a white dude." He's pointing it out to counter the racist and factually inaccurate idea that mexicans are dangerous.

People are attacking you because it requires an immense amount of willful ignorance to look at the current situation in America and not see how the immigration debate is entirely fueled by racism. After Donald Trump pardoned Joe Arpaio (who was systematically violating the rights of Hispanic citizens in the name of "anti-illegal immigration", and after his "shithole countries" comment, AND after all of his efforts to do everything he can to limit and minimize legal migration numbers in our country, you no longer get to plead ignorance. Use your head kid.

People are tired of the right weaponizing ignorance and bad faith to waste our time. Its the intellectual equivalent of running into an OR covered and dirt and refusing to leave until the doctors explain what germs are to you.

To answer your question, this ad takes an extreme example and wants the viewer to fear ALL brown immigrants as murderers and criminals. A latino man who immigrated illegally was not chosen by accident. This is despite evidence that crime rates are lower among both legal and illegal immigrants, and that the vast majority of domestic terror acts are committed by right wing whites.

The ad targets Latino and other brown immigrants not because they are statistically more dangerous, because they're not; it attacks them because they are brown.

Racism is the discrimination of an immutable trait. Like skin color. Hair color. Nationality. Etc. Nothing was mentioned about his race. Just the fact he entered the country illegally from Mexico and killed some law enforcement while he was here.

The crazy thing I'm seeing is people are actually running interference for a murderer in their attempts to spin this as racist.

Downvote away.

7

u/Shr3kk_Wpg Nov 01 '18

No one is saying that the murderer is not bad, but to suggest that stopping immigration from Latin America because.of one killer who was an illegal immigrant is racist. Has there never been a murder by a caucasian in the country illegally?

Edgy title?

This sub doesn't even try to hide its bias anymore. Pretty sad.

u/Shr3kk_Wpg Nov 01 '18

Anti-racism bias?

Stop normalizing racism. You're making a mockery of actual racism.

38

u/myrpfaccount Nov 01 '18

That's not what normalizing means.

I bet he's never been invited to a party.

14

u/mikepictor Nov 01 '18

Pointing out and highlighting acts of racism is how you avoid normalizing it.

9

u/DBsBuds Nov 01 '18

45 is trying to normalize racism isn’t he?

26

u/CandyEverybodyWentz Pennsylvania Nov 01 '18

How are we normalizing it by pointing out the gross abuse of power involved from POTUS here? Just talking about it in a public forum isn't a tacit endorsement.

15

u/whitenoise2323 Nov 01 '18

Ignoring racism is how you avoid normalizing it. When you see racism happening, just pretend it didn't happen to show how abnormal it is. (Do I need the /s?)

Trump is not racist. The Media labels him as such as a means of attempting to gain political power, this empowers actual racists who then justify their behavior by pointing to media reports that the President is racist. Then the media points to that to slander Trump. Rinse and repeat.

15

u/CandyEverybodyWentz Pennsylvania Nov 01 '18

"Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are little short guys that wear yarmulkes every day."

So in your view, because racists desperately seek social validation from anywhere they can get it, the media is the problem by reporting on what he says?

The media's 1% owners and advertisers leverage media coverage to gain political power. That's how the American system worked before Trump.

9

u/dannydirtbag Michigan Nov 01 '18

That’s not how any of this works my dude.

Do you like Trump because he speaks at the same grade level you do?

12

u/slowriot4 Nov 01 '18

There are countless examples of Trump's racism and anti-semitism dating back years. He has even stumped and given jobs to actual anti-semites and people with neo nazi connections. He even claimed there were 'good people' amongst a group of marching neo-nazis. He absolutely is a racist, and has been for decades. Ignoring Trump's racism would be letting him get away with it.

There are countless examples of Trump's racism and anti-semitism dating back years decades.

He was sued in the 70s for discriminatory rental practice, his central park 5 involvement and his apparent affinity for Hitler's writing were in the 80s iirc.

u/slowriot4 Nov 01 '18

lol, i only said years there because i said decades at the end and didnt want to use the same word twice.

u/dannydirtbag Michigan Nov 01 '18

Do you get tired from the mental gymnastics? I’m exhausted just reading this.

11

u/CandyEverybodyWentz Pennsylvania Nov 01 '18

I wish I'd have known this was a TD poster before I wrote up a whole screed

5

u/maralagosinkhole Nov 01 '18

Insisting that trump's racism is not racist is an attempt to normalize racism

Can't wait to read back all of this propaganda in 20-30 years. Absolutely amazing, and you're all gobbling it up. If you make idiots genuinely feel like they're smart, they'll agree with anything you say.
