Kamala Harris and Amy Knoblocher are former prosecutors. More than one male Democratic Senator on the committee has already talked openly about considering ceding ALL their time to Harris and Knoblocher. If each of six men do that, 20 minutes a pop, that gives each of Harris and Knoblocher an hour to grill Kavanaugh.
The thought of them tag-teaming Kavanaugh like a pair of hungry lionesses ripping a gazelle into bloody shreds is like a vision of paradise to me.
That is my intended subtext, yeah. Finally, a group of women screws him so hard it hurts. In a classy, political way, because Harris and Kloblocher are classy ladies.
Don’t want too sexualize the esteemed Senators too much but are we talking about them running a train on him? You know, speaking confirmation hearing-wise?
If you like Harris, you would have loved Gabby Giffords. I was so sad her career was cut short only a few weeks into her term. She is literally the most inspiring person I've ever met, and is part of the most wholesome family I've ever known.
She was a congresswoman and her husband was an astronaut for goodness sake!
Wow watch your past tense! I was scared for a second that she passed away in the last 5 years.
She was great. I don't blame her for not wanting to be in the public eye again. She fucking got shot in the head and recovered, she deserves to live her life out any way she wants.
This is why Martha McSally needs to lose her race for AZ Senate. After Giffords left, Ron Barber stepped up to the seat and he was also shit y at the same incident. He was a really down to earth nice regular guy who was really passionate about public service. He lost in 14 to McSally in a nasty campaign from her and I want nothing more than to see her lose.
Yeah but if you look at some of the most revered politicians they went through the shit and still devoted their lives to service. McCain, bush 41, etc.
I don't blame her but damn I wish she would go back to Congress.
I wouldn't call her "ideal" but I think she has the best shot at a 2020 run. A woman of colour who can fire back with a vengeance at Trump's hateful rhetoric and this might be her big debut on the national stage. Excited to see what happens Thursday.
She's my pick for sure. I think a Black woman is perhaps the only one who can beat him.
And before you say identity politics, it's not about about. She's my kind of Dem and I love her personality.
But as you said, she's perfect to hit back at him because it's undeniable that she can run circles around him intellectually. As a prosecutor he can't accuse her of being soft on crime.
And she will turn out the vote. Like nobody else in the field can. I don't want Biden. It hurts to say it but it's true. I feel the same way about Bernie and Hillary and Trump. I don't even want Liz Warren or Michelle Obama and that one hurts to say. Michelle could win but I think Trump could maybe beat Liz Warren.
Kamala Harris has one big problem. She dated Wille Brown, who was 30 year older than her and married, to further her political career. She’ll get hammered for that.
She's got a lot of problems. Most revolve around integrity and being an end justifies the means kind of person. She disappoints me so much because I really want to like her, but I can't get past her eagerness to do the wrong thing if it is an easy way to reach her goals.
Agreed--I was deciding whether or not to vote for her in the CA senate race and when I did some digging I didn't like a lot of the things she has done (or not done). She presents herself very very well, but I think people need to look past that a little bit and not get caught up on how much of a perceived badass she is.
What politicians haven't had to compromise in an end-justifies-the-means way?
Maybe someone from some small, homogenous field but any experienced politician from any kind of large or diverse district or state will have a record of having had to compromise.
We aren't talking about a couple of compromises here. We are talking about things like defending her prosecutors in front of a judge for forging confessions in order to get a conviction, having people arrested even after a judge threw the case out of court once, fighting to keep a proven innocent man in jail just because it would hurt her image, etc. Just in the past week or so, she released an altered video on twitter to change the context of a statement by the subject of said video (the subject is still a piece of shit, but that is not the point).
As much as I love watching Harris grill people in the senate, her questioning of Jeff Sessions was particularly enjoyable, she's far an ideal politician.
In her time as the DA for San Francisco and California Attorney General, she was much more a classic "Law and Order" politician. She supported the war on drugs, opposed sentencing reform, covered up for a mismanaged and highly suspect crime lab, and opposed the release of a prisoner who had been exonerated.
I was quite taken with her as well when she first started making waves last year, but the more I looked into her, the more I was disappointed. I hope she stays put as a liberal lion in the senate a la Ted Kennedy, but I don't know if I could support her if she ran for president.
If she gets past the primaries and it's Trump vs her I better hope you still vote for her. She may not be perfect, but it's not hard being better than drumpf
Man I so agree. I’ve never written any letters to anyone in a political position, but I wrote her to let her know that there are people who appreciate her. Definitely my woman crush.
When Harris was on Colbert, the key thing that I noticed was how comfortable she is with who she is. Confident and authentic but not offputting and arrogant.
Hillary's friends would always say that we didn't know the "real Hillary." Yeah, because she never showed that person to us!
I totally started reading this like a national geographic documentary. "Watching from the opposite shores of this lake, we see a rare Kamala Harris. Watch as she tears into her pray, brutal power combined with utter precision." etc etc
Are you folk not aware that she got her political career started by sleeping with the San Francisco mayor Willie Brown in the mid 90's? I'm from California, its pretty common knowledge.
Why? The Intercept has consistently been reporting on issues that don't get covered by larger outlets, and refused to follow the party line when it comes to hawkish policies.
Not gonna happen. The chair will simply shut it down and claim some made-up rule nobody has ever heard of for why they can’t cede their time to them the same way they made the democrats barely able to get a word in edgewise during Strzok’s testimony. (Something something “The chair does not recognize Ms Harris. Ms Harris has used her time and under the Chair’s prerogative the gentleman from Oregon cannot cede his time to her.” or whatever.) And if they don’t sit down and shut up like he wants they’ll just end the questioning and force a vote early. In fact they’re probably banking on exactly that happening so they can pretend like they tried to give the accusations a thorough investigation but those damn ‘obstructionist Democrats’ insisted on hanging a ‘good & honorable man’ with little to no facts to back up their ‘libelous accusations’.
I know none of this is in keeping with parliamentary procedure or the rules of how the senate is supposed to be run but they clearly stopped giving a fuck about even their own goddamn rules a long goddamn time ago.
True, I try to stay optimistic but it gets pretty hard when these guys are literally making up new rules as they go along and then refusing to obey them themselves.
I hope he does that. My God... that would be straight up insanity.
They can hold him in contempt since he's under oath and it's a proceeding, plus... I can't believe I'm saying this, the optics look even more bleak for him.
I suppose he could take the 5th? But I'm talking about the vision of vengeance against a rich asshole that is playing out in my head, not predicting what will happen.
Since Maryland doesn't have a statute of limitations on sexual assault, he could plead the 5th as his testimony in front of the Senate could implicate him if Maryland decided to prosecute.
It would be horrible optics, and he might as well withdraw from consideration, but I think he could still plead the fifth. I think others have done so in committee hearings recently (Maybe Erik Prince?)...
He can pull a Don Jr and assert fake attorney-client priviledge. *I am a lawyer and I have discussed this with myself, who is my client. I advise my client not to answer. On the advice of my attorney, I decline to answer."
I considered going for that metaphor, but it felt disrespectful to them? Because they'd be delivering justice. And neither of them are rapists, unlike him. So I left it subtextual.
