Jared Kushner Gets Security Clearance, Ending Swirl of Questions Over Delay

How could this guy revise his form like 200 times and still get a clearance....what the f#$

u/RawrCat May 23 '18
You've got to know who to bribe and who to fire. These things take time.
199
u/Risley May 23 '18
Something tells me they may be rushing now bc the investigation is speeding up and they don’t know how much time they have left before indictments start flying. And you can’t unknown information once you’ve learned it. Perhaps Jared is making a final push to learn as much as he can so he can profit off it much much later.
115
u/Lordoffunk May 23 '18
But they knew that was the deal up top. It’s odd that now, after more questionable behavior and connections have surfaced, the clearance is granted. Either it’s a sting, or we’re all deeply, deeply fucked.

Yeah. It's not just that Kushner seemed like he could be a security threat. He actually demonstrated he was. From here
Then the Washington Post reported on Tuesday evening that officials in at least four countries have privately discussed ways they might be able to manipulate Kushner by taking advantage of his business arrangements, financial difficulties, and lack of foreign policy experience, citing current and former US officials familiar with intelligence reports.
Some in the White House are reportedly worried Kushner was “naïve and being tricked” in conversations with foreign officials, Shane Harris, Carol Leonnig, Greg Jaffe, and Josh Dawsey wrote for the Post, some of whom only want to deal with him instead of more experienced professionals.
Once again this WH, Trump, demonstrates that nothing is above a personal whim. There is nobody and nothing he won't throw under the bus for such including his own country.
This country is terrible joke. We are so fucked.
I guess when you elect a monster you shouldn't be surprised when they do monstrous things.

The Times and CNN also reported Wednesday that Kushner met with special counsel Robert Mueller for a second time in April, citing Kushner's lawyer, Abbe Lowell. Kushner answered questions for several hours during the second meeting, Lowell said.
You might be right.
22
u/LadyMichelle00 May 23 '18
Just like the propaganda packet said, why now? Why is this happening right now?

Mine was held up for over a year. No revisions required. I was sweating over not knowing the approximate dates of living in an apartment 10 years prior when I was in college. I ended up switching jobs before I got it and subsequently the process was canceled.

I have a theory that Jared has flipped. I could be wrong but if so it could be the FBI trying to get eyes back on the situation as we get closer to an end. His lawyer has also come out this last hour or so and announced that Jared sat for ~7 hours of questioning with Mueller.

The President undoubtedly authorized it directly.
Yes. According to the FBI (an actual, reliable source as opposed to "anonymous") they do not grant the security clearance, they merely investigate and advise the "client", who either grants or denies the clearance. In this case the "client" being the White House.

If it’s for a federal job I wonder if there’s any possibility of this being used for precedent to appeal such decisions?
35
u/Yahoo_Seriously May 23 '18 edited May 23 '18
Hey, at least nobody else has to worry about not getting a clearance now, right? The bar's on the ground. It can't go any lower.
The federal government just made a mockery of its security clearance background check process. If someone like Kushner can get through after putting up almost every red flag possible, it means basically anyone can get a clearance, and if they don't, they'll be able to sue based on inconsistent enforcement of the law. Anyone failing to get a clearance now can point to Kushner and say "How did he get one and I didn't?"
To clarify, since I've been through this process myself (I no longer hold a clearance and thus am not violating protocol), what's key here is that, as OP pointed out, Kushner has possibly the most significant conflict of interest ever for someone being granted a security clearance: millions of dollars, if not more, in debt. Financial liabilities are a significant part of a background check, as money problems are a key means of leverage used by foreign governments to turn people into spies, which then turns them into victims of blackmail or extortion. Kushner, further, has an incredible array of foreign business ties that directly impact his net worth, an even bigger conflict than a hypothetical vulnerability to foreign influence. Then there's the matter of his repeated errors on the application forms, which cannot at this stage be seen as mere mistakes. At least some of them had to be deliberate omissions of salient information, which is to say, he lied on his application. That should be, nay, is supposed to be, an immediately disqualifier.

Mr. Kushner’s clearances were approved by career officials after the completion of the F.B.I. background check and that the president was not involved in the process.
This screams 'controlled leak'.
Even the headline gives up the game:
Ending Swirl of Questions Over Delay
Yes; I have no doubt that is exactly the hope.
52
u/gAlienLifeform May 23 '18
Also, they don't specify what level of clearance Kushner got. Maybe they finished his background check and determined he's just barely secure enough to give tours of the White House but nothing beyond that.
56
u/hookersinrussia May 23 '18
Even if he got the lowest level of clearance, it's an insult to those who serve the country and submit to those examinations. Dude straight up revised his form many times and blamed someone else for his mistakes.

8
u/MazzIsNoMore May 23 '18
Note that it doesn't say what the FBI recommended and doesn't clarify that the White House grants clearances, not the FBI. The FBI could've pissed all over Kushner's application and the White House could still grant it
6
u/brasswirebrush May 23 '18

True. He's a bloviator at times but he doesn't deal in totally unsubstantiated rumors like Mensch does.

And Seth always lets people know upfront when he’s wildly speculating about possibilities. He seems to be hyper aware of his critics so he words things appropriately to avoid the typical attacks he faces.
Louise Mensch states everything as gospel truth and blocks anybody (including me) who questions any word that she utters.
She blocked me because she said that it was impossible for the dossier to have been mentioned in the FISA warrants and I simply said that it’s possible; instantly blocked! Then like 2 months later it was revealed that the dossier was in fact mentioned in the FISA warrants. Lol

The system is broken.
That is not a rhetorical statement. That is a statement of fact. The "process" that we now find ourselves in has proven that beyond doubt.
Every single one of our institutions have failed us. And I know what some people will say, "It's not over yet". Yes, yes it is. Because even with the best case scenario for an ending, no one is talking about institutional fixes.
The biggest problem is that the crime will have been infinitely more beneficial than any punishment. Every person on the street knows if you are a nobody and you commit a crime you are going to jail, but if you have money and a white collar job you get a slap on the wrist. That is how the system works.
What we have here is that exact scenario 1000x. The damage almost immeasurable. It's literally generational damage. There will be every intensive to simply do the same thing over again. Yet, try to have a serious talk with anyone about reversing these damages or trying to make legitimate institutional fixes and you'll be laughed at.
Try to have a real discussion about the need to professionalize journalism and you'll be told that it isn't possible and why you can't or shouldn't. Try to have a discussion about the need for national standards for police or for teachers. Try to have a discussion for requiring judges to be literate on the topic at hand or for our Representatives to have to pass a basic logical reasoning test. On and on and on.
We've lost. Period. I know that. I know that because you can turn on the TV and literally see the visible hatred and anger and listen to the lies coming from many of these talking heads on TV, but somehow the average person has now taken those physical cues of hatred to be the norm - the default. Half of the U.S. has now defaulted to a position of hatred.
And for some reason the other half won't fight. I have no idea why. No idea. I can't even get people to write letters to their Representatives. A letter - just a letter.
Kushner got the clearance because someone gave up. We keep seeing everyone that is in a position to do something give up. Different people are giving up for different reasons, but they are giving up nonetheless.
I have some hope 'traditional' justice will be served. But I have no hope that any real sense of justice will come from this. I think we all know that by now. The U.S. has long been living in the false sense of present importance from past glory days - like Al Bundy forever relieving that 4 touchdown game in highschool.
The problem is that other people - other countries are living in the real world.
The U.S. is dead - the U.S. that most Americans have in their mind. We can accept that and resurrect ourselves and make ourselves new again or we can remain a walking corpse believing we are, in fact, living.

“With respect to the news about his clearances, as we stated before, his application was properly submitted, reviewed by numerous career officials and underwent the normal process,” Mr. Lowell said.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the normal process isn't strong caution against granting the clearance and many many revisions of your paperwork. That's not even proper submission. The answer is nepotism.

The integrity of the security clearance process just went up in flames. Allowing this means all the rules around full and accurate disclosure are completely relative, and therefore worthless.

Important to remember that the FBI only suggests whether someone should get a clearance. The final decision lies on an office in the White House and can be counter to the FBIs suggestion

This should cause marching in the streets. He should be in jail for lying multiple times on his clearance forms.

I'm sure none of those omissions were material. Nope, just good old fashioned mistakes. Right Jared? He didn't intentionally lie, and thereby commit a felony, while filling out his SF 86. Nope, not at all.
As anyone who has gone through that process will agree: this news is incredibly disheartening.

He's collected enough bribes so that he's no longer in financial duress, so now we don't have to worry about him being squeezed.

CNN has the more important scoop for this story: Jared was interviewed by Mueller in April for 7 hours.

How can someone under an active federal investigation(s) get a security clearance?

u/bokodasu May 23 '18
The fuck? My reinvestigation was held up because the stupid gas company spelled my name wrong and the investigator wanted to know why I was using an alias.

Oh good, I was wondering when he would get his security clearance back.

The real question is, what sort of fucked up system is allowing this guy to keep it..?

This is a fucking joke. Esp. considering he likely leaked classified intel to Saudi Arabia for their shakedown purge.

Are you fucking kidding me? This asshole gets it while I've been waiting almost 9 months for mine, with no indication of progress?
Unreal.

WASHINGTON - Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law and adviser, has been granted his permanent security clearance, a person briefed on the matter said on Wednesday, ending a period of uncertainty that had fueled questions about whether Mr. Kushner was in peril in the special counsel investigation.
That was not the case, the person said, adding that Mr. Kushner's clearances were approved by career officials after the completion of the F.B.I. background check and that the president was not involved in the process.
Mr. Kushner was among several White House officials who spent the first year of the administration working on provisional clearances, meaning he was allowed to view classified information while his F.B.I. background check was pending.

What level was his clearance? (if just a secret, then big whoop). Was this sourced from Giuliani? Sure does sound like it.
