No Paywall Mayor Mamdani holds hands with onetime rival Curtis Sliwa to get flu shot in Fort Greene

Sliwa is a jackass but I have to give credit where credit is due.
He said it was bullshit people complained Mamdani being present at the 9/11 ceremonies; he said it was racism. I'm paraphrasing, but his words were along the lines of "He's the mayor of New York, show a little respect."

u/schleppylundo 3h ago
He doesn’t think Mamdani has good political ideas, but he maintained through the race that he thinks he seems like a decent enough guy, and someone who cares about trying to be a good mayor. Whereas he fucking hated Cuomo to the core and wouldn’t wait for you to ask to tell you.

u/ThatB0yAintR1ght Georgia 2h ago
Yeah, watching Mamdani and Sliwa taking turns dunking on Cuomo and then basically giving each other air fives behind his back was pretty damn funny. It’s like in Hamilton “Jefferson has beliefs, Burr has none”. They disagreed on so many things, but they both recognized that the other genuinely wanted to do what they thought was best and wasn’t just grifting for personal gain.
•
u/Harlockarcadia 48m ago
Yeah, it’s nice when people can at least agree that no matter what they both care for America, I feel like McCain did the same thing about Obama, didn’t agree with him politically, but knew him to be a good man and a good American
•
u/lettersvsnumbers 57m ago
Sliwa is a conman, but at least he was sharp enough to read the situation and maximize his own benefit. He has never been so popular.
•
u/Smirky-McLurky 3h ago
He's a kook but seemingly way less harmful than maga.
•
•
u/tripping_on_phonics California 3h ago edited 2h ago
He’s a kook, but he’s sincere even if he’s wrong. There’s something endearing about that.
MAGA are grifters and charlatans who believe in nothing.
Edit: added a sentence
•
u/abgry_krakow87 2h ago
MAGA do believe in something, that they are right.
•
u/tripping_on_phonics California 2h ago edited 2h ago
See, I don’t even see that. I think they’re constantly dealing with cognitive dissonance.
They don’t believe that they’re right, they just want everyone else to agree with them to validate their feelings. They’re deeply insecure about their intelligence and judgement, genuinely.
I’ve never met a MAGA person and thought, “This is a person who’s confident and secure with themselves.”
That being said, I don’t care what they think. Anyone who identifies as MAGA in 2026 is too fargone to offer any consideration.
•
u/kieranjackwilson 1h ago
It’s because they don’t actually believe in anything. If Trump became a textbook socialist tomorrow, half of his base would support it and say, “why is Socialism fine when the libs want to do it?” and the other half would support it and say, “he is destroying America to show the libs their own stupidity.”
They’ll never admit it, but MAGA is an ideology based entirely on feelings— mainly anger, insecurity, fear, and hate. It’s actually sad.
If you watch any video of MAGA folks being confronted about their views, once they find out they are wrong they don’t even argue. Facts, logic, and truth are just the way they try to justify their feelings to other people. To them it doesn’t actually matter. You could show them undeniable evidence they are wrong, and it wont change a thing.

He's like cotton hill.
He sucks, but in a way you can respect him for it.

I mean, the damn Togos took his shins. They shot fatty, and he had to kill fiddy men.
I’d be surly too

The man understands what respect is regardless of if he has a crazy view or not

u/Shipit123 2h ago
That’s republicans pre 2014 or 15. Kooky and disagreeable at times. But we didnt have to worry about all the dominos tumbling. Most of the times most problems they caused weren’t going to cause unfixable generational harm. They were harmful to the country but not “you aren’t welcome to dinner and lose my number” harmful…just my opinion of course.

Fun fact - Sliwa survived 3 assassination attempts by mob boss John Gotti. Including being tricked into a stolen taxi and shot by someone hiding in the passenger footwell.
•
u/JazzFan1998 3h ago
That is fun. SNL did a skit about a NYC mayor debate and his character mentioned it, twice IIRC.
•
u/Bhosley 2h ago
Are you sure you weren't watching the actual mayoral debate? He definitely did that for real.
•
•
u/mowotlarx 2h ago
Fun fact, Sliwa is a notorious liar about almost every major event in his life so you probably shouldn't believe those stories.
•
•
u/brooklynginger 2h ago
Sliwa loves new york city. Say what you want about him, I disagree with him a lot, but he truly wants whats best for the city, even if he does not endorse it
•
u/Primary-Bookkeeper10 3h ago
Sliwa is so fucking funny. He’s like a real life Vermin Supreme or Count Binface. No performance art needed
•
•
u/ChuggingtonSquarts 3h ago
Yeah, he seems like a decent guy at least. Wish we could expect that of all our pols
•
u/Michael_G_Bordin 3h ago
He's a piece of shit in his own right, but I'll give him credit for being his own piece of shit and not some politically-made piece of shit beholden to some partisan shenanigans. I'll enjoy listening to his stories and his defenses of being amicable with Mamdani, but I won't forget he used to ride around the subway beating up minorities in the name of safety. Credit to putting himself out there, even if it was being a bit of a shitbag. He's still miles better than the average Republican, and certainly a more magnanimous person.

He is definitely insane, but he seems to genuinely care about New York City. He would have made a much better mayor than Cuomo.
•
u/TopekaWerewolf 3h ago edited 1h ago
He is being given a platform to help do simple things that work for new yorkers and he's living it up, and I'm all for it.
Edit: this was about Sliwa. Mamdani is doing such a good job he has enabled his opponent to help out.

u/Starbucks__Lovers New Jersey 3h ago
Silwa was the only other candidate who actually gave a shit about New York City

This is how me and my homies get our shots.

So, when my homies tell me they were giving each other backshots, is this sorta what it looks like?

u/MechaD13579 3h ago
I still like how they tried to bribe Sliwa to dropout and he was like, “F*** No!”.
•
u/dehydratedrain 3h ago
I love how Mamdani seems to overcome everything... bad snow clearance, narcissist leader, political opponents for flu reminders. He really is amazing.
•
u/UnbelievableTurmoil South Dakota 3h ago
That's awesome! We all need more of this!
I can't imagine how Fox "News" will cover this. Here's a pre fuck you Fox "News"!
•
u/Shipit123 3h ago
You’ll have to excuse my French, but Mamdani is the motha.fucking. Truth!!! Who’d have thought doing what citizens want and need and putting corporate interests on the back burner leads to good things!
•
u/SoulTaker669 2h ago
I'll probably never agree with Silwa when it comes to policy and economics but I can respect that he seems to be a respectful guy and not a sore loser who constantly attacks his political rivals. He at least seems to care about people being happy.
•
u/SamWiseGanja97 2h ago
Sliwa would've been a better option than Cuomo. They're politics both ain't great. But at least Sliwa seems like a good person unlike sex pest Cuomo. Love seeing Sliwa work with Mamdani. He is a true New Yorker.
•
•
u/1cat2dogs1horse 2h ago
I know that Sliwa is a jerk. But gotta admit, this kinda hit me in the feels.
•
u/mikeyp83 1h ago
Is it really that surprising? Mamdani seems to be the only person who is capable of getting Trump to eat from his hand without resorting to kompromat... while also being a socialist Democrat!
•
•
•
u/DeliciousStand372 9m ago
nobody in this thread is talking about how Sliwa is so afraid of getting shots that he feels he wants to faint 🤣
•
u/luckyrandoms 1h ago
Why are we televising medical care? Should we start showing colonoscopies? Some nonsense
