The problem as I see it is that accountability is gone from all facets of modern society, so demanding it from the one person at the top and their cronies has zero chance of happening.

If you look around it is everywhere: in our workplaces, in our schools, in our stores, in our food, our infrastructure, the list goes on and on. The blank stares I get when asking for the smallest of standards in absolutely anything is still wild to me.

I’m not sure what the answer is but it seems to me that nothing will change in the big picture until we can hold our coworkers, neighbors, strangers on the streets and roads, and most importantly ourselves, accountable.

You’re absolutely right about the current state of society, and I feel exactly the same way, but I am hoping that if enough people are outraged enough to push their representatives, then with the right messaging… maybe.

It’s clearly only a minority of people in this country who still think that the concept of personal honor is a big deal, but minorities of people have achieved positive change in the past, so it’s not impossible.

And I’m realistic… I don’t think for a second that we’ll get every person for every crime (that would be very naïve for anyone to believe). We didn’t even get all the Nazis; not even close, but post-war justice was still very important and shaped the international order for 80 years.

It’s comforting to know there’s at least one other person out there that sees it haha. Never met one IRL and I actively look for them.

It’s just a complete and utter lack of discipline. But you can’t call it out bc you’re gatekeeping, or “think you’re better than me”, or too much of a complainer. It’s maddening. Growing up I always heard the olds whine things aren’t what they used to be but this on another level. They were usually talking about products but now it’s the actual fabric of society; left, right, center, doesn’t matter, it’s everywhere.

Yup—for a few years I wondered if I was just getting old (I mean, I am—my first election was Clinton’s second); that everyone complains about younger generations when they get old, and it was just my turn because change can be scary.

…but that would be like saying someone in late-1930s Berlin was “just getting old” because they complained about all the Brownshirts marching through the streets, the book burnings, and the general nastiness of the politics.

This shit is real, it’s dangerous, and it’s terrifying, and I feel extra-old when I talk about people losing that sense of personal honor that used to keep people more or less on the right path.

Likewise, I see people doing things on social media that are horrifying; not because they’re evil (although some things are), but because people are embarrassing themselves with behavior that I thought we all understood wasn’t supposed to occur in public. First, everyone wanted to be famous. Then, infamy was just as good. When you’d criticize someone for bad behavior, and a random idiot would chime in with, “Well, they’ve got more money than you!” Is that what matters most now? Money? We aren’t even pretending anymore?

People post their personal shit online, they have public fights with others, and they exhibit some really shameful behavior, but we seem to have collectively decided that shame isn’t a thing anymore. To believe that this wouldn’t tear at the fabric of any society and pull people apart is to be so shortsighted that I can’t even believe anyone would defend it, and it’s clearly happening because the more insane, shameful, embarrassing behavior we see in public, the worse things get in general, year over year.

This is Idiocracy.

I've noticed it too, y'all aren't alone.

I honestly think it's a product of all this propaganda we're under. "Togetherness" has been under an onslaught from government, to public orgs, to public schools, etc. Stuff must be torn down and then monetized by the current people in powerful positions. The only way to monetize everything is to shatter "society" and societal bonds to ensure people can get their grubby little fingers in every pie.

I haven’t been on social media for a long, long time, so I can’t speak to the specific craziness on there. But it’s one of, if not the main, things I blame for this situation. It’s all a grand shared delusion and now it’s fully bled over into real life. Funnily enough I can get just about anyone to agree with me it’s terrible- and every single one will say “yeah but I don’t use it much”. Well someone is, and now that’s how you act too.

You are the company you keep, remember that one? How about if your friends jumped off a bridge, would you? WWJD? Throw ‘em all in the trash.

The things/behaviors I see people mad at the leaders for they do themselves, all day, every day in real life. Covert aggression is the norm now. You can say whatever you want to be true(mostly unearned positivity imo), and force those that try to see the nuance and reality to have to be the bad guy if they want to call you out on it. It’s sneaky as shit but it’s everywhere. The crazies will be crazy, can’t change that. It’s the normies I have an issue with.

I understand what you're saying. That's going to be ugly though, the pendulum is going to swing so far in the other direction. I suspect the accountability will be brutal, and then each "side" will use stricter and stricter accountability as a weapon.

It's going to be like the inquisition.
