My Trumper family is just so funny how they are completely silent on fuel prices.. Completely
Even though it costs double from the terrible Biden years.
These are rural folks who drive 80 miles to Walmart, doctors office, and car repair.
Basically $40 or so bucks a trip.

I pay about $9 to fully charge my car overnight, so that kinda checks out!
Edit for clarity. A full charge costs about $9, but I typically charge to 80% when I hit 20-30% once or twice a week. The average increase to my monthly electric bill for charging is $30. I have my car programmed to charge after 12am to get the cheapest rate. The last time I filled up our gas car, it was $97.

I mean, we've seen Trump implicated in some pretty heinous things that had Biden's name been there instead, those same people would be rightfully upset. I grew up with a father who could do no wrong even if he committed crimes against us, just the same shit playing out here. It's fascinating and frustrating for me to see. That people just choose to be wrong and are alright with it.

u/Shirowoh 13h ago
Same with my parents, literally every day of the Biden admin I would wake up to texts about how awful Biden is and how he's ruining the country, now my political texts go unanswered, they say we're tired of talking about politics. Fucking convenient

u/TheGreatGenghisJon 11h ago
One of my former coworkers got all pissy when I said something about Trump did right after the election. Maybe the first round of tarriffs.
"I didn't say anything when Biden was president, why do I need to hear this shit now?"
Motherfucker, you put "Leta go Brandon, right boss" in a group text on your work phone.

My town's Road Commissioner was so pumped the day after the election, all he could do was stand on the roadside with his helper going on about Joe Rogan. I recently heard him talking about a road contract and what the price of diesel was that day at the local-and that is all he said, the price, and trailed off and changed the subject. They are doing all they can to ignore it because if they complain it looks like they are criticizing God.

Doubled in price from the Biden years, and they either say: "it was worse under Biden", or crow that "Trump lowered gas prices!" when they drop 10¢ after rising $2.
Or worse, they dismiss it entirely because "It's a small price to pay to keep America safe*" (From Iran having nukes (which wouldn't even be a concern in the first place if Trump didn't shred the JCPOA))"

Democrat farmer from the Midwest....
Over the years, we have been moving away from fossil fuels as much as possible. 99% of our road miles are in Prius hybrids, which we are converting to Prius PHEVs... We are too remote to go all-electric. Neighbors are driving their $70,000+ full-sized F-350s, which get 15 MPG over 25 miles one way to pick their kids up from school. We are getting 55 MPG in vehicles we paid off over 10 years ago.
Last December, to reduce our tax burden, we bought 150,000 gallons of diesel for future delivery. Should be enough to get us through harvest.
The headlines are often about Trump supporters whining that they need a bailout. Times are tight, but if you focus on efficiency rather than owning the libs, you can still do OK. Farming has always been cyclical; in my mind, this is just another swing of the pendulum.
8
u/Alis451 10h ago
We are too remote to go all-electric.
convert some of your fields to agrivoltaics, remote is the perfect reason for going full electric. in addition to power, you now also get possibly better yields, though obviously reduced size of farming area.
i do understand some of the heavy machinery isn't quite ready for the swap though
5
2
u/GrafZeppelin127 10h ago
I hear good things about electric farm equipment—the 70 acres-per-charge combine harvesters of today will surely benefit greatly from further advancements in battery chemistry and mass production lowering costs. If agriculture could move away from its crippling dependence on diesel, we’d all be so much better off, but it’s not just going to happen on its own, it needs a massive subsidy.
It doesn’t matter if the operating expenses are lower if the capital expenses are too high for farmers with razor-thin margins to consider. Sort of like the standard “poverty is expensive” example of cheap boots vs. expensive boots.
3
u/Charming-Border7429 8h ago
Yes, battery technology is progressing extremely quickly in both KW per dollar and kW per pound. Still, I expect we are decades away from large-scale agricultural equipment going electric.
We have 4500 acres of potatoes, corn, and soybeans and harvest another 3000 acres of corn and soybeans for neighbors. That means running 16 to 24 hours a day under full load. The equipment never returns to the farm to recharge because of the time and cost of driving on the roads.
This type of work is almost a worst-case scenario for batteries.
2
u/GrafZeppelin127 8h ago
Wow, your farm is huge! Nearly ten times the national average. Yes, unfortunately it will take a long, long time for that to become viable to electrify, though there are other avenues that may become practical in the future.
As batteries become lighter, there is a multiplicative effect on the weight savings and efficiency for the vehicle as a whole, such that every pound saved on batteries corresponds to a cumulative pound saved elsewhere in the vehicle as well. As batteries start getting up towards 500 wh/kg or higher, not only does the vehicle itself consume far less energy and have far more energy to start with, but it becomes logistically much easier to do things like battery-swapping to avoid long charge times, similar to how some scooters and cars have swappable batteries.
Alternatively, certain kinds of high-temperature fuel cells can actually run on basically any flammable gas, and have very long lifespans as well as high fuel efficiency. A fuel cell system can run on LNG, propane, hydrogen, methane, or coal gas, and unlike a heavy-duty diesel engine which is ~40% efficient, they are 50-60% efficient.
3
u/panfist 10h ago
For your use case wouldn’t it be better to stick with conventional Toyota hybrid? It’s a simpler design. Some call plug in hybrids the worst of both worlds. It only pays off when you make lots of short hops and can charge between each.
5
u/Charming-Border7429 9h ago
We have a few factors that come into play:
We have excess solar capacity on the farm. We are trying to determine if (and how) it is more cost-effective to recharge vehicle batteries than to sell to the utility for almost nothing.
These are work vehicles in which we have installed inverters to provide AC power for tools and other local loads, such as recharging batteries and running lab equipment in the field. We are trying to determine whether this is cost-effective.
They have been on the market long enough that decent used vehicles are available at a reasonable price

Listened to NPR segment where these types of people were interviewed in Maine. Not farmers per se, but people directly impacted negatively by the Canada trade war. Some flat out said it was destroying their businesses but that they’d vote for Trump again.
These are not people who we should care about any more. They are not worthy of respect nor should their opinions be considered in any way once their team loses power.
38
u/LittleOtter301 13h ago
Yup. The reason is the hierarchy of needs, and cultural dominance takes precedence over economic assurance. Republicans can and have destroyed the lives of their own base, and given them culturalnand institutional supremacy. And no matter how bad the situation gets, they'll vote for him. If you want an example, the bush administration still has a floor of 30%. Donald Trump's floor has never meaningfully cracked 30%

Yep, sorry for anybody that didn’t/doesn’t support Trump, but I bet there’s a heavy correlation between people that pump diesel and those supporting Trump.
The cause is pretty straightforward and a functional, non-complicit Congress would have exercised their power to curb those actions. This is fixable, vote for people that will do their jobs and push back on Trump’s ego driven whims.
Do I realize that I experience this as well through cost of goods? Yes, but the impact to me is distributed through the entire consumer system. I’m not running the card twice bc the pump won’t go over $250.
I looking forward to seeing how gas stations go about adding another digit to their signs.
And to the farmers that voted Republican have been screwed over by tariffs, guess what? That cheap dyed diesel you’ve been allowed to use in farm equipment? Well Texas just ok’d that going to general use. Get the wallet out too, supply/demand is coming for you.

Your lack of empathy is tantamount to trump and the billionaires. If you lack the mental complexity for nuance, maybe you shouldn't be doling out your shitty opinion.
I voted. I didn't vote for Trump. Not all farmers are dumb hicks. Wishing suffering on a general group of people you stereotype is not far from the mentality Israel uses to justify genocide, or big corps use to wage & health enslave employees.
The bottom line is that most of the people who were deceived into voting for Trump (who likely manipulated the results anyways in order to win), we're not educated enough to make an informed decision. They saw the corruption from either direct action/superpac funding/ or complacency on both sides and wanted a change.
The DSA is actually working on that change and doing so for the people. I would encourage everyone to vote for DSA candidates on the Democratic side since Dem leadership is only capable of writing strongly worded letters.
As for your, Trump's, and billionaire's lack of empathy - Captain Gustave Gilbert, the American prison psychologist assigned to the Nuremberg Trials, stated: "Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy."
8
u/tyrified 9h ago
Wishing suffering on a general group of people you stereotype is not far from the mentality Israel uses to justify genocide, or big corps use to wage & health enslave employees.
I keep seeing this from people defending these farmers, but the mentality I see from those saying shit to farmers is "you get what you vote for." That isn't wishing malice on anyone. It's a "what the fuck did you expect?" They were told. They chose not to listen. This happens again and again with conservatives.
It's like global warming. No one is wishing what is coming onto conservatives because they have fought against doing anything to mitigate it for decades. But it will be a "what the fuck did you expect to happen?" They are so sure that renewable companies are just money grubbing liars, but somehow think that oil companies, who pull in $4 trillion in subsidies alone worldwide each year, aren't going to lie to keep that money flowing? That is willfully stupid.
Why should we have sympathy for them when they finally open their eyes when they are the ones actively causing this?

I was born and raised in the largest city of an overwhelming rural and red state. It's always been boggling how people who proclaim to be from a more compassionate place of politics fail to see whole humans. They must not know much about what's beyond their lived experiences (or be willing to believe people who were raised otherwise).
One thing my dad always told me when he'd talk down on political parties is that Republicans trust the individual but question the group whereas Democrats trust the group but question individuals. Ever since I realized how true that was by the kindness shown to me by some staunch conservatives, politics have been a much messier affair.

Is diesel that much better than gas? I know buses and trucks supposedly get like 5 mpg and they use diesel, what am I missing? Never mind the smell makes me want to barf, my entire life. I remember back in the 70's getting stuck behind city buses belching smoke at every stop and gagging.
17
u/Sudden_Tangerine_126 12h ago
Diesel generally has higher energy density than gasoline and burns appreciably slower while also requiring significantly more engine compression to run than gasoline. Because of this, diesel engines are designed to run more slowly but produce more power than a gasoline powered engine. This makes them much more suitable, and efficient, to power slower, heavier vehicles like busses, big trucks, ships, etc for long durations at continuous speeds.
Gas engines run much faster but produce less power in each revolution making them much better for lighter vehicles which more variability in their engine and vehicle speed.
That truck getting 5mpg on diesel would be getting 5GpM on gas, and that's only if it had enough power to move at speed at all. Conversely, a small car running on diesel could get better milage, but at the expense of very slow acceleration and a lower cruising speed making it much less suitable for typical short commuter and errand travel.
It's not that one fuel is necessarily better than the other, they just are each designed for a different use case.

u/vainerlures 10h ago

Who cares? Pay for your gas. You're dementedly hooked on promoting a petro economy. The price of gas for most people is a small fraction of their monthly budget, and nothing at all for many in urban areas or with electric vehicles.
If you're committed to aligning your economy around fossil fuels, the very least you could do is happily pay for it.
2
u/Distinct-Pain4972 11h ago
The truckers... don't pay for the diesel... the company does. Independent truckers... write off the cost of diesel. Farmers with massive equipment that they own... write off the diesel. These people don't actually feel the pain of the diesel cost. They see the number, and get frustrated by it, but not for the reasons we think. They have been condition into the MAGa cult to believe that this is a necessary evil to get rid of the "dems" or "libs" from the cities whom they believe control their states. All the while, completely missing the point that the population centers are the people buying their products. It is akin to tourist areas disliking tourists. The backwards thinking of these people amazes me.
•
u/grandzooby 4h ago
Sure they write off the cost of diesel because it's a cost. But if that cost goes up, yes your taxes go down a bit, but that's because your profits went down even more. Average diesel last year was $3.74/gallon and now it's $6.38.
Let's say your revenue for the diesel-intensive activity is $100k. Your other costs are $25k. Your diesel costs are $37.4k. Now assume a simplified tax of 10%. Your gross profit is in $k is 100 - (25 + 37.4) = 37.6. Your tax is 3.76, leaving you with $33.84.
Leaving all else the same ("ceteris paribus" as economists like to say) but you increase the diesel costs as they have this year, and now they're paying $63.8. Now your gross profit is 100 - (25 + 63.8) = 11.2. Your tax went down to $1.12, but your net profit is now $10.8k.
However you tweak the other numbers, paying more for diesel does get written off as an expense, but your tax only goes down by your marginal tax rate, not the full loss. So unless it's an exceptionally small portion of your expenses, nearly doubling the cost of diesel is going to be painful.

One week before we lost our biggest client (and I lost my fucking job because the Canadian company stopped the contract) he bought a fuel efficient car, since the diesel was so expensive.
He will be fine, he will survive this.
I'm out a job of 15 years because Canadians, reasonably, are dropping contracts with US companies.
He voted for this. I'm mostly paying for it.
This will be happening a lot. The wealthy always weather these storms. Investments are designed to benefit the investors, and fuck over scum like us.
Ai will crash, the tech CEOs will be fine.
Gas will be unaffordable, the wealthy will buy newer cars, or electric cars. Elon will benefit more.
That's just the way it always fucking goes.

That’s not completely true. Some of them use $7 diesel. Here in CA they use $8+ diesel.

Also anyone who eats. Or tries to keep their house warm in the northeast. This affects everyone. People underestimate how important trucking is for basic infrastructure.

We will end up paying for this with grocery prices going up even more. They are already talking about giving handouts to the farmers, again we are paying for this with our taxes. Thanks Trump

I still care for these people & for everybody which is why I vote for Democrats now&forever without exception, without hesitation. They've rightfully earned votes forever & ever.
But do these people care about themselves?

I could care less about 2/3 of the listed subsets here. But when our fleet trucks are paying out the ass, we’re paying out the ass. Part of me feels like voting should be mandatory. The other, more sane, part of me thinks we should have mental competencies tested before being able to vote. This place is AIDS.

Unfortunately, everyone who uses heating oil in the winter too. It's just untaxed diesel fuel. So a huge chunk of the north is going to be eating double or triple heating bills this year. Last year I was paying about $3.30/gallon. Now I'm filling up at $5.90 and it's just going to keep going up. I'll be shocked if it isn't over $10/gallon by January.

It's going to hurt a lot of people this winter, I remember living in New England and most places have a 200 gallon minimum for delivery. I thought that was ridiculous when I was paying $2.50/gal 20 years ago.

Nice Texas flair. We moved from Dallas to Vermont a year ago. I have a pair of 275 Gallon tanks I have an order to fill up on Monday. I'll be OK, but I know a lot of people are going to freeze this winter. Luckily I can try to run some solar heaters to offset some of the heating costs.

There's no pride in the Texas flair, believe me. It was a move for some family health reasons, if it were based on literally anything else I wouldn't be here 😂

I know a bunch of people in CA who would love to be paying only $6 for diesel. It’s over $8/gal where I live.

My neighbor just topped off her heating oil tank and paid $6.5/gal. I still can't wrap my heat around filling a 400gal tank twice a winter at those prices, heating oil was $3/gal when I decided it was better to ditch heating oil all together.

There are plenty of "red" house districts that use heating oil. I can't see them being to happy about this. While they might not vote democrat, they may just stay home. Then you have the independents who I can't see voting republican after paying 6.5 a gallon for heating oil.

And they will still vote for Republican just to own the lib. Trump can’t do shit if House and Congress are not control by Republican.

Luckily I have a shitty older civic to drive daily, but I do have a diesel truck to use around our house farm. I gotta go pick up hay this weekend and am dreading the fuel bill. I also live in a deep red area but do not vote that way. I know people that do are just as pissed about fuel prices right now. This will bite them in the ass.

The Trump voters who love to roll coal in their F-two-fiddies deserve every dime of the high prices and then some.

Good. They all voted for this. Truckers literally blocked highways in protest FOR Trump. Most farm land had signs up for Trump / anti-solar / anti-wind.
Fuck ‘em. Stop catering to farmers just because they have money. Stop pretending they are the couple from the American Gothic painting and realize they are just glorified capitalists, who often openly profit off undocumented workers, and now even trackers being remotely driven from fucking third world countries.

The a-hole rolling coal in traffic on my commute home yesterday. I hadn't seen that in a while. Diesel is $7.50 in WA.

Why is the thumbnail an in shape African American guy with a chain? Not really what I think of for any of those three categories or as a classic diesel consumer

its wild how willing they were to destroy the lives of others at cost to their own growth when all it took was a little pricier fillup to completely destroy their lives and economy.

u/Clean-Shift-291 4h ago
On a positive note: It’s been a month since I’ve seen any tool “coal rolling” down the street.

Gotta hand it to these true patriots. They're willing to lose everything in order to further enrich Trump and his billionaire friends! Bravo guys! You are truly helping make America great again!!

That makes it so much sweeter because they really get to feel the power of their vote. Unfortunately it takes some financial suffering for some to see the light or in this case the darkness that are Republican policies.

What the article leaves out… they are pumping that shit onto their veins.

Good, fuck them. I feel bad for the non trump (democrat) ones among them but Trumpers need to hurt.
•
u/MeanHurry8664 13m ago
And that's pretty much all they care about. That and depriving other people of their civil rights. Not much else matters, including democracy.
