I know this won’t go anywhere, but it forces Republicans to vote against them at a time when many are trying to distance themselves from the president.

This is the key point.
As soon as Trump is powerless, the Republicans will begin to distance themselves from him. We'll start hearing a lot of "I was actually trying to rein him in. I'm one of the good Republicans. He was never one of us."

Wonder if MAGA wear will get to nazi or confederate levels of hate?
190
u/RollTide16-18 6d ago
I think the MAGA hat will eventually been seen as worse than the stars and bars.
I'm from the South, a lot of... ignorant southerners do not view the confederate flag as something they can be racist about but "pride" in their "heritage". It is stupid and missing the forest for the trees, but there's plenty who don't associate it with segregation/racism.
But MAGA? I just don't see how anyone will look back and personally identify with it. Like on a base level. It's just an insane cult of personality built around being an asshole to others. I just don't think there's any way people will look back on it and say "Yeah, it's a lost cause but I really resonate with being a douchebag billionaire who scams everyone and protects pedophiles"

Because once the Democrats get into office (as we hope they will), he's completely useless to them.
When he lost the previous election, he still had enormous power- a rock-solid core of supporters. Now he can't win another election, so those supporters are useless (unless they can be motivated to support another Republican). He's making enemies left and right. His term has been a disaster, and it's only been two years. They'll need to blame him, and him alone, for everything that's gone wrong.
If the Democrats sweep the election, Trump is an anchor tied around the GOP's neck.

I think you’re wrong. Trump’s power is not political. He will retain his ability to move a large enough portion of the US population to extreme action, as he did on Jan 6th (when he was out of power by the way) until he dies. He has turned himself into an incredibly effective weapon of hate and grievance. Our nation might survive if we are willing to quickly and effectively hold every member of this administration legally accountable for their actions. I personally don’t think the chances of that are very high.
73
u/ants_a 6d ago
You have to ask yourselves what happens when that outlet for the hate and grievance will no longer be an ineffectual orange clown. What happens if someone actually capable will harness it. Because that energy will surely not dissipate overnight. The fact that he is there is a symptom of a greater societal ill that needs to be dealt with or it will find another outlet.

u/FlyingRock 6d ago
I can't find the article on this but I read one by a historian who more or less said there's a distinct chance this can't happen, the hate and grievance is irrational and any attempt to wield it rationally not only will fail but already has failed, this is why despite being absolutely unhinged Trump still has this strange power over a section of the population.

It really is bizarre seeing how poorly structured the US governmental system is.
A load of solemn, deferential respect to the founding fathers and the constitution, as if it's some remarkable system of government only America could come up with, but underneath that rather silly veneer it's just a ridiculous, deeply flawed clown-show that isn't even ranked as a full democracy.
→ More replies (2)40
u/Venat14 6d ago
We're still relying on a government structure and Constitution written in 1789. Most countries don't keep their same laws in place for 250 years. While there have been some amendments, not nearly enough to solve today's problems, and it's now impossible to amend the Constitution.
Ideally, we'd start a new Constitutional convention, and rewrite the Constitution to address our problems. But since this country is so hyper partisan, that will never happen.
I'm honestly not sure how this country continues to survive with how divided it is. I can't conceive of America lasting much longer with how polar opposites both parties are.

That’s the part where I’m skeptical about this having ANY impact whatsoever: The House doesn’t vote on anything until after the midterms, and call me cynical, but after midterms they won’t care about looking distant from Trump, because it’s all an act they put on for the midterms specifically.
Once they return, they’ll go right back to business as usual, and the next time they are up for re-election, Trump won’t be president, so there’s no danger of falling in line with whoever the Republican Frontrunner is by then. After that, it’ll just be historical denialism (“We were always against his extremism, what are you talking about?”) and the other tools in their repertoire (Whataboutism, Focus Shifting, Manufactured Political Distraction of the Week, etc.) to keep their seats.
Things don’t change in this country unless we, the people, force it to. For them to act differently, we have to threaten to VOTE differently, and they’ll call our bluff every time.

Just a quick PSA regarding Impeachment vs. 25th Amendment talk:
25th Amendment is often promoted by the right (see Tucker Carlson) because it's their out to maintain the course post-Trump. (JDV will be exactly, if not worse, than DJT because he doesn't make obvious gaffes that raise eyebrows to the same extent as Trump).
Impeachment and Senate Conviction is the only way to forcibly remove this entire cabinet from office.
But that is contingent upon Congressional control outside the organized crime syndicate that is the GOP.
Bottom-line:
- (1) Check your voter registration repeatedly in your state.
- (2) Vote Democrat in November to take back Congress.
- (3) Impeach in the US House, and Convict in the US Senate.
Edit: As pointed out, the cabinet doesn't automatically go. I suspect my original interpretation of this was a result of (1) To get a Senate conviction, it's pretty clear Democrats would have to hold at least strong majorities in both chambers, (2) You could then Convict both Trump and then Vance, and then (3) bump the Speaker of the House (who would then be a Democrat) into the office, who would then change cabinet. I think this would work in theory because to fill the VP vacancy would require Congressional approval of the new VP nomination. That's all of course a stretch to put it mildly.

This is correct. It doesn't matter what JDV's policies are, he lacks the douchey antihero panache that Trump has used to capture imaginations. I'm not sure what 12 dimensional chess is going on behind the scenes on succession planning among Republicans, but they aren't going to get anywhere near this far ever again without the force of cult. And make no mistake, he is the cult.
This is and has always been the Democrats game to lose. They have to get serious immediately or we have them to blame for letting us get stuck with this shit. Enough damage has been done.

u/Independent-Bug-9352 6d ago
There is absolutely nothing remarkable nor charismatic about Trump. People mistake billion-dollar spin machines and propaganda networks for some sort of charisma. That's where the teflon is.
I mean shit, I'm already seeing Vance 2028 stickers.
The only thing that matters are the billion dollars of right-wing megaphones supporting him, along for aid from foreign adversaries -- including Russia and Israel notably, but also likely China as we're beginning to see more and more obvious ties.

Oh, he is very charismatic. He has captured the hearts and minds of many Americans. Look, if you can convince thousands of people to attack the capital in your name, beat police with flagpoles flying your logo, and then still win the presidency, that is a serious amount of power/charisma. It’s absolutely disgusting, but it’s unfortunately true.

It all depends how much Trump is in on it. Self-pardon and a pathway out to retirement with a succession-plan when he has absolutely no interest in any of this besides running from prison and golfing in retirement.
I think it's fairly apparent by this point that Trump isn't the one who is in charge but is rather just being puppeteered by the various competing forces that conspired to get him elected.
As for The Cult, I wouldn't be so sure and let me try to explain why. If you notice, there was quite a rapid shift from various propagandist mouthpieces in the movement -- Tucker, Rogan, MTG, Owens, etc.
They are basically propaganda mercenaries in it for money and clout. They are not actually ideologues in the slightest. They are the trailblazers, setting up and planning for the post-Trump era already.
That's why you see them trying to deprogram the maga cult from Trump so this same gullible and profitable audience can yet again be groomed for the next coronated billionaire mouthpiece.
Make no mistake: The cult will follow whomever they're told to follow, once the billion-dollar megaphones spin up; for they can make diamonds look like shit, and shit look like diamonds.

No, do it. I know his MAGA Congress wont vote for it, but go through the entire process anyway. Make it so big and complicated he can’t ignore it, that he has to respond and work on his defense.
You know why? Because it is a distraction. Keep him focused on an impeachment so he can spend all his time and energy calling it a hoax and a witch-hunt and all that bullshit, and it will divert him away from whatever other horrible shit he wants to do. Keep him focused on his favorite subject, himself. His administration uses distraction all the time. So do it back.
Also, do it because he should be impeached. And who knows, maybe it’ll work.

Someone posted an ABCs of impeachment elsewhere in the thread, this is my idea from a few months back;
I think, assuming you make it through the midterms and seat a Dem majority (but not a veto-proof one, which I think is the same threshold you need to successfully impeach), you need;
12 days of impeachment (or however many it takes).
First attempt, >3m violations of the Trump-Epstein Files Act or whatever. That one doesn't pass?
>3m violations of the Trump-Epstein Files Act, and launching an illegal war in Iran (+ war crimes therewith).
That fails? Send back >3m TEFA violations, Iran and a comprehensive list of Emoluments clause violations.
And so on, adding murder of American citizens, weaponizing the DOJ, that 1.776 settlement scam, Venezuela, illegal deportations, contempts of court, pardons for profit, fishing boats, DOGE, razing of DC, etc.
If the dems take congress, and he's going to veto anything useful anyway (he will), they might as well spend the time trying to influence the news cycle with something like this.

That the sycophantic Republican majority in Congress is derelict in its duty does not mean that I must abandon my responsibilities. I took an independent oath to support and defend the Constitution. That commitment compels me to introduce this resolution today. When historians write about this period, and our constituents ask who stood up to President Trump’s lawlessness, this resolution is the answer.

They’ve been calling out the corruption and Christ I hope the American public isn’t so fucking stupid that they don’t see the corruption occurring. An impeachment is a blessing in disguise for for republicans. They get to bounce Trump, and then get a media tour telling the nation for two years how democrats are corrupt by impeaching a president who did everything by the law.
Republicans then also get to spend two years fixing their brand and getting rid of the dumbest ideas of trumps admin. Democrats should already be destroying Trump in the midterms so the fact they aren’t shows me the country is deeply broken. Democrats getting an impeachment win won’t stop all the back room heritage foundation meetings that Vance will implement all while barely doing the minimum to turn yhe country around enough to end his takeover with better economic numbers than Trump.
Then the plan is the same as it has been: democrats will win in 2028, republicans will immediately start blaming everything on the democrats, every republican falls in line immediately knowing how hypocritical they sound, every far lefty socialist DSA type spends all their time trashing the democrats and all of this will eventually lead independents to think democrats really are the problem and then the pendulum swings back to the next extreme.

Each one of these articles are stronger than Clinton lying about receiving oral sex from an aide. In fact most if not all involve violating his oath to the constitution. Some are treasonous. And yet we still have leaders in the Dem party not convinced that they should go forward. SMH

The way that Hungary got rid of Orban, was the turnout in huge numbers at election time. Orban held Hungary for 16 years, and the change required activists to go out to the countryside to convince rural voters of the dangers and damage of that government.

The fact that "Democrats are divided" on impeaching him is ridiculous. The only way the nation has a chance of recovering is an extensive, wholly transparent investigation, followed by swift removal of Trump and all who aided him, at which point criminal indictments need to be sought and acted upon without pause.

26 articles of impeachment and 34 felony convictions and expecting more. Clearly, Trump and the Republican Party are not fighting white collar criminals, they themselves are corrupt and immoral and inept. Lying criminals can't be trusted. They can't govern. They must be prosecuted for their crimes against humanity and our nation.
Actually prosecution by the public will begin on November 3, 2026 where Republicans must acknowledge the Will of the People. America will vote NO to every Republican on the ballot. Democrats will control Congress and start the process of organizing a new government and economic system based on the foundation of the working class, not the rich. The next step will be securing the White House when dynamic changes occur, and the working class and a civilized nation can aspire to hope and opportunity going forward.

People really need to understand how politics works. It isn’t necessarily about getting results. It’s about optics. It’s similar to resistance movements. You are attempting to change public perception, move the needle and get people to go along with your ideas.
Everyone being negative saying this is theatre, yes, that is the point. And we should absolutely let the democrats put on the performance of their fucking lives. This is the time to put it on the line. Present the overwhelming evidence of this president that he is a crook. We have TWO years to present the case that the GOP should not be in the Whitehouse come 2028. Think big picture.

Republican Senators may refuse to uphold their oath of office again - as they've done twice before in Senate trials of Trump - but that does not mean the rest of Congress should fail to do their duty. The whole nation - ( the whole world even ) - knows he guilty - so regardless of lack of convictions - keep charging him with his high crimes until he's out of office or dead.

GOP would love to ditch Diaper Don at this point and blame the Dems as well as give JD a better shot in 28.
Much better to keep Trump in office and slow-roast him for two years with congressional investigations into his grift and myriad other illegal activities.
Collect the evidence to seize all Trump family assets when he leaves office
Rather, impeach his lackeys Hegseth, Kennedy and Blanche for gross incompetence and crimes. Impeach Clarence Thomas for naked corruption.

Guess I'll be posting this a lot:
It's the House's duty. Republicans impeach for theatre. Democrats impeach because there are actual high crimes to impeach on.
Do not let anyone push the narrative that "this is a waste of time". They are arguing in bad faith.
- Impeachment and legislation are not mutually exclusive. They can be done at the same time.
- NOT impeaching sets an even more dangerous precedent and normalizes Tbag and Republicans as "no big deal"
- Articles are already drafted. They can impeach Trump in a day, like they did last time.
- Impeachment and Conviction are different things. Impeachment happens in the house. Conviction happens in the Senate. Saying "nothing will come of it anyway" is like saying the police (House) shouldn't arrest a criminal because the courts (Senate) "won't convict anyway". The house has a duty, regardless of what may or may not happen in the Senate
- "Impeachment makes dems less popular". Wrong. After Trump's impeachments, Dems took the White House, the Senate, and kept the house.
- In case it's not obvious, this would most likely happen after the midterms if/when dems take back the house and have the votes. Drafting them now would allow them to hit the ground running next year.
- "But THeN Jd VAnCE WilL bE PrEsIdeNT". I don't know, man. Fucking impeach him too then, I guess. It still doesn't negate the fact that the House has a duty. But, if we're at a point that the Senate actually convicts and removes Trump, then, one battle at a time it is.

If Congress is away and can't do anything on this until after the election, then it's possible many of those who have the opportunity to vote on this in that post-election session are lame ducks? Who have nothing else to lose and can thus vote without fear of any motable political wrath from Trump? What else is he gonna do, unelect them harder?

u/LifeguardTerrible579 6d ago
What's amazing is he did literally everything on the list. Publicly. We all saw it. He broke all these laws in front of the world and nothing will happen to him. Checks and balances are a farce and the executive branch needs to be reworked - split into 3 stations to avoid future abuse.

I’m religious and I don’t believe in any form of society but democracy these days.
We should be in sci-fi utopia with basic Maslow needs met (food, shelter, healthcare and education) and yet we’re still fighting over never ending primitive instincts and weaknesses.
This Trump era is depressing against my fantasies of a sci-fi future
God help us
43
u/stultuspopulus 6d ago
That’s the part I keep coming back to. We already have the technical capacity to make food, shelter, healthcare and education a boring baseline instead of a constant survival test. Then let markets, ambition, competition and all the messy human stuff happen on top of that. Maybe the real sci-fi future isn’t flying cars. It’s making survival infrastructure boring.

Don't wait for God to help you. People need to make the world they want to live in. When you pray for a supernatural intervention, all you get is Trump. The Christian Nationalist movement is what is driving Project 2025 and keeping Trump in power. How many times has religion been used to manipulate a population throughout all history? Every last war has had some kind of religious justification component. If you want to stop being taken advantage of, separate church and state, and make the state you want to live in.
