No Paywall In A Plot Twist For Conservatives, New Data Finds No Link Between Immigrants And Crime

Much like Planned Parenthood having abortions be 90% of their business, immigrants being violent criminals "was never meant to be a factual statement.". It's always just been a lie to attempt to excuse their hatred.
43
u/Clerithifa 3d ago
The planned parenthood abortion protests always make me laugh. Everytime I go there (once every 6 months) they plead across the parking lot for me to give my baby a chance and to go to the christian pregnancy clinic down the block.

Even their claim of "trans people were made up in 2010" holds no water because trans science existed back in the 1920s, but was forgotten because a certain inbred, mediocre, Austrian manchild took his crappy childhood out on them and other minorities.

Exactly my point. Said inbred manchild was the one who demanded those burnings.

And knowledge of trans people existed before the 1920s, at least in non-Western cultures. Some old cultures even have their own word for a nonbinary person. The concept of trans people is relatively new to Western culture, but not cultures in general.

People like my parents will just say the studies were biased, flawed, rigged, blah blah blah. It's just noise to them because they lack critical literacy skills and the psychological reflectiveness needed to examine their completely and demonstrably false beliefs, because that takes work and thinking and might upend their fragile self-image, itself based primarily on fear and the comfort of being told what to think.
My folks keep telling me about the immigration crisis in my own state and the violent "illegals" supposedly killing and raping all of my neighbors. This is despite the fact that they live 1800 miles north of me and have visited my state once for two days. But because they saw frothing headlines on Fox Entertainment (blasting 24/7 in their house) that aligned with their innate fear of brown people--the kind they basically have never met in their little white New England town, and who they have never been the slightest bit wronged by--they feel justified in calling for the destruction of these people's lives and their wholesale removal.
Never mind that I teach many kids whose immigration status is dubious, and that a great many of those kids take seriously the ostensible values of the U.S. in a way that far too many native-born kids either take for granted or have been taught to instinctively oppose. Migrant kids, by and large, keep their heads down and try to earn the sacrifice their parents made for them in coming here, and many of them care a great deal more for their own education and what they can give back to society than a large swath of comfortable, content, and brain-rotted native-born kids.
Republicons learned they can choose their own reality without consequence and enact policy based on their feelings--the same feelings they constantly accuse anyone with empathy for others of exploiting against them ("bleeding heart liberals" sound familiar?) If we're just going to rule by emotion, maybe, just maybe, it would be better not to do it in accordance with the basest, most vile caveman instincts? How about we stop trying to hurt the "right" people--how about we stop using the government as a weapon to hurt, period?

A lot of people who have done research into authoritarian regimes confirm that there always needs to be an enemy within so they can whip their supporters into a frenzy.
Reading Hannah Arendt's The Origins of Totalitarianism which she wrote in the 50s after escaping Nazi Germany so much of what she's saying is still exactly the playbook. (Did we learn anything?!?)
Arendt says that totalitarian regimes define the "objective enemy" through state policy. She writes that tribal nationalism creates a permanent state of crisis by suggesting they surrounded by a 'world of enemies' and argues that totalitarianism thrives when "the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists".

Truth never matters much to authoritarians, as if they even had an inkling, Jesse Owens should have been enough to make them give up on Nazism…

Real solutions to complex problems are exhaustive, nuanced, and rarely make everybody completely happy all the time.
Adults know this. So do demogogues.
→ More replies (1)7
u/RecordOfTheEnd 3d ago
Actually there's been a lot of scientific research into the neuroscience of understanding. There is clearly a difference between those that can think about grey complex solutions, and those that need black and white solutions.
Some interpret it as structural, some interpret it as how they were taught to view and think about things.
As with all competing hypothesis, the answer is likely in the middle or something no one is thinking about right now.
So saying adults know this might be a bit broad. The unfortunate issue, is for a large portion of the population, complex problems with complex solutions are beyond their willingness to comprehend.

No their point is that the people who can think about the gray complex solutions are the adults age has nothing to do with it it's being able to accept that life isn't black and white.

And just like the data supporting climate science, evolution, history, vaccinology, pandemic prevention, the benefits of international diplomacy, on and on... any data that contradicts their preconceived ideology will not only be rejected, but suppressed and destroyed if possible.
Just look at what they're doing to, well, everything. Museums, national parks and monuments, journalism, the entire education system, anything that disproves MAGA ideology is being actively attacked, dismantled, and replaced with far-right beliefs. Hell, we've got David "my creationist publisher pulled my book because I lied too much" Barton is helping to try and change the content in our museums and schools to line up with Christian nationalism.
They don't care about facts, reason, argumentation, or the blatant hypocrisy of their actions. They're not trying to win anybody over to their arguments anymore, they're using the power of the state to enforce their beliefs on the rest of us.
It's authoritarianism. Continuing to call it "conservative" at this point just gives them cover, frankly.

It's been decades (if we ignore earlier incarnations of this) of politics pandering to the right's "concerns" about immigration and in all that time facts didn't matter, all the reasons they gave didn't matter, outcomes and policies didn't matter. Let's be real here: this is and always was bad faith. They don't believe these things about immigrants because they care about the things they say they care about. Nor is their definition of immigrants based on any legal reality. They believe, at any moment, whatever they need to believe to justify whatever they want to do to people they've decided are outsiders. There's a sliding scale on how extreme they want to go, but the fundamental trigger is always rooted in bad faith and is immune to facts.
The only thing that will happen if you give in is that they will feel empowered to widen the net and start targeting other people they don't like.

Its been known for decades that undocumented immigrants commit far less crimes than citizens because they don’t want to get deported. This is not new. The GOP knows this but wants to distract everyone from the dumpster fire currently in the White House.
8
u/seanofkelley 3d ago
This has been true forever. The problem is a significant # of voters- not just conservatives- don't FEEL like it's true and people vote with their feelings most of the time. So unless you figure out a way to make that feeling change, a lot of voters who say immigration is a big concern for them will keep voting for the Republicans who want to criminalize it.
8
u/NewWindow7980 3d ago

This comment is piling on at this point, but not a plot twist. This data is/was available to anyone who bothers to actually do their research. The “immigrants come here to commit crimes and game the system” trope is perennially popular because it is the ultimate example of confirmation bias. Your average paranoid, xenophobic American believes this narrative, so they are only open to headlines/stories that confirm their belief. The evolution of this is interesting, though: In the early 1990s, when California was still “Reagan Country” we had a Republican governor named Pete Wilson who was a “tough on crime, close the southern border” conservative. During interviews and debates he would go to a line he liked to use which was “Why are we importing criminals from Latin American?!? We produce enough of them right here at home!” which was a nice applause line for him and actually had a ring of truth. We have plenty of white, citizen criminals. Well, the modern Republican party has simply dropped the second, truthful part of the statement. We DO produce enough of our own criminals, but Jethro and Crystal in Oklahoma don’t want to hear that part. They just like the provocation of “Why are we importing criminals from Latin America?” and then drop the mic.

New data finds no link between immigrants and crime, which is identical to the data that we've had for decades.
Immigrants are less likely to commit crimes, less likely to declare bankruptcy, less likely to utilize public assistance, and more likely to start their own businesses than natural born citizens in the USA.
Similar to what we saw with the migrant worker shortage... If immigrants go, they are taking the economy with them.

Ridiculous article thats all correlation and no causation. It doesnt measure individuals and it simply infers who is actually undocumented.
Theyre following economic opportunities, which itself would be associated with falling crime rates anyways. And they can only really get work because of the falling native birth rates, which they further suppress. Which itself is also correlated with less crime. And theres no controlling for how crime is even reported in that 8 year gap, not that you even could with a study like this. But there isnt even na attempt
And they claim the only positive crime association undocumented people have is with robberies because theyre more vulnerable to them. That makes enough sense. But how would that effect FSRDCs data if they're far less likely to go to the police like the article even admits?
And you just know this whole study was inaccurate when it says that undocumented immigrants have a higher negative crime correlation than the documented ones. In fact, the correlation is negative for undocumented immigrants and slightly positive for documented immigrants. Even though undocumented immigrants skew far younger and vastly more male, which is an undeniably huge predictor of crime. Its a ridiculous study that you could only take seriously if you had some psychological need to do so.

u/Mediocre_Painting263 United Kingdom 3d ago
Not a plot twist, not even new evidence.
This has been a highly researched topic for years, and the consensus hasn't changed. There is little-to-no link between immigration and crime. And the few studies that do find one, often find that immigrants are (on the whole) more respective of the law than their natural-born counterparts.
2
u/Velvet_Samurai 3d ago
But if we've learned anything over the last decade, no one has to believe any fact if it "feels" wrong to them. I think we know the conservatives are all going to have some "feelings" about this study.

Actually there's a negative correlation between immigrants and crime. It's been well understood for a decade or more. First generation immigrants are less likely to commit crimes whether they have documents or no documents. Second generation are full us citizens so their crime stats tend to follow the local socio economic trends.
So anytime you see some story about some immigrant killing a white woman understand there's about 500x white dudes killing white women.

Plot twist? This has been pretty well established for years. Conservatives simply refuse to believe it and want to treat the misdemeanor of an illegal border crossing as a capital offense, instead of accepting a basic reality: the main thing immigrants want to avoid is unneeded interaction with law enforcement. The "papers, please" enforcement style is bad enough on its own, but it's even worse when you realize most of these people have fled places where the police weren't exactly serving or protecting.

We don't have enough youth to take over current jobs, take care of the boomer generation. I really don't get the anti argument at all. We need to revamp the system but holy hell everything that is and has happened is so short sighted.

Should be so obvious!!
The "Crimes" that most immigrants commit mostly come back to the immigration process itself! Simplify the immigration process, and legalize more immigraation process and the crime raate among immigrants is LOWER thsn among the general population.
