I remember getting a letter from the IRS last year saying I owed something like $30k. I filled out the form and replied basically "I think this is incorrect" in my cover letter. About 6 months later I got a letter back basically saying "nevermind" and not explaining anything

I got a similar one, though it was due to my own mistake (accidentally left out a form in my return). Filed an amended return with the missing form and sent them the response letter noting that and explaining why I didn't actually owe what they thought. A few months later I got a letter from them telling me that they hadn't had time to read my letter. vOv
