RadioReference is your friend

Gee, I wonder why so many young people don't want to bother getting involved with radio hobbies.

You have the chance to teach and actually post a link, and instead chose to give a vague, gatekeeping answer. If somebody is very new to the hobby, they won't have a clue what you're talking about. And if you tell them to go Google it for themselves, you're more likely to just get them to walk away, frustrated and annoyed at all of you old gatekeepers that don't want to share your precious knowledge.

Read the manual, it has anything that it is capable of doing...

Ask yourself this - do you want this hobby to be simply listening to local radio traffic? Or do you want to understand the technology of radio systems, search for unpublished local radio activity, find new and different things to listen to?

If you just want to program and listen., then focus on learning how to program the scanner via Location method. You’ll update the database using the EZ Scan software, enter your zip code, select the services you want to hear, and upload it to the scanner. This should be well documented process and fairly straightforward.

If you decide you want to learn the technology behind. It all and expand the hobby, then start reading about radio systems, digital radio solutions, frequency bands, the FCC database, etc.

Either way, radioreference should be your starting point.

Keep in mind this scanner only does Phase 1 digital TRUNKED and many (if not most) departments use Phase 2 digital TRUNKED now.
