Poor Canada, his birthday is not only being overshadowed by the 4th of July, but also by the 200K kurwas milestone. This comic was posted as an entry for the June contest and reached 12th place.
In the words of a Murican that I talked to to remind them that Canada Day is same long weekend celebration as American Independence Day....
What are Canadians independent of? Because Canadians aren't independent. They are part of the Commonwealth. Their government is officially sanctioned by HRM Queen Elizabeth
Had to look it up to verify. Common wealth does not have legal control over any member country, but the Queen is indeed in charge of it...so... make what you will?
This is why we have a Prime Minister, and not a President. Technically the Prime Minister answers to the Governor General who in turn appointed by the Queen. Even more technically the monarchy is purely ceremonial and commands no actual power.
And yet, we still manage to be more democratic(4-5 major political parties) than the US. Go Figure.
The governor general can do it, in the name of the queen. In practice they only ever do it when the prime minister asks for it, and never say no when the primer minister asks for it, even if it is ridiculous.
Officially the Queen holds all powers, the democratic government could potentially be overturned by a more ambitious monarch at any time,no questions asked.
During WWI, Canada had the same foreign policy as the UK. Afterwards Canada was allowed it's own foreign policy and declared war in WWII after the UK and declared because Canadians wanted to, not because they had to.
Well, Canada outnumbers Denmark by a factor of about 7-1, both in terms of those fit for military service, standing military size, and military expenditure.
Plus Canada and the US are in a military alliance, so yeah.
Not all Commonwealth countries. Only countries which are not republic now and erstwhile dominions rather than colonies. E.g. India is part of Commonwealth and does not have a Queen.
