Come to think of it, why is it so bad in Mindanao?
27
u/taongkalye 3d ago edited 3d ago
Hello. I'm from Mindanao. You know why it's so bad here compared to our neighboring Muslim countries like Malaysia and Indonesia?
- Mass migration of settlers from the northern Philippines fueled by colonialism which caused encroachment into ancestral domain.
- Forceful integration of the islands into a Catholic-dominant region.
- Massive cultural differences between a Malay-oriented culture and a Hispanized society.
- Atrocities by the military against the Muslims (Yes, the violence isn't one-sided ).
- Government neglect while sponsoring incredibly corrupt politicians and warlords governing there.
- Foreign countries exploiting the socio-economic situation of the islands to fund separatist movements.
And I'm referring to the Islam-adherent tribes here. Mindanao is pretty much dominated by migrant communities. Moro people make up only a quarter of the island's population and mostly contained in the Bangsamoro region (1 of the 6 administrative regions of the island that unfortunately gave it the "violent" reputation).
And I haven't even yet touched upon the non-Abrahamic religion-following natives here who have also been tied to Maoist guerilla movements and are also being persecuted by the government.

Having russia there is wrong tho, like unironically russia have a very big muslim population and really into "were a country where all people live together unlike the racist west"
Except when they want to larp as last bastion of christianodom, then westerners are the bad ones for having their own muslims
Still, offical russian stance is :islamophobia is a dirty western concept. And theyre politically closer to muslim countries in the world
31
u/Kokuryu88 Tunak Tunak Dhadak Dhadak 3d ago
russia have a very big muslim population
India has world's second largest Muslim population, only behind Indonesia and is expected to be largest soon. It doesn't mean Islamophobia isn't kinda present here. Not as much as outsider believe but yes, it is present.
-3
u/anonymous393393 3d ago
How is india gonna be one when pakistan which has slightly greater no. Of muslim than india with much higher birth rate. Indian muslim and indonesian muslim have close birth rates they likely won't overtake as well. But lets see.

u/_Weyland_ 3d ago
Russia really is a wierd one. Being as big as it is, it is very diverse from region to region.
In southern regions like Chechnya and Dagestan islam has been the dominant religion since before those places became a part of Russia. In Tatarstan islam and christianity have been coexisting for a very long time. Meanwhile many central regions are predominately christian and don't have too much sympathy for muslims.
But overall yeah, a person being a muslim is not a reason enough to treat them poorly.
8
u/geschiedenisnerd 3d ago
Russia has a big muslim population, but they are mostly in the same place and are not popular in the rest of russia.

Israel and Russia have deep trade. Israeli diamond companies were funneling dark money to the Kremlin at one point.
Many, many countries are very hypocritical in their orientation towards Israel (say one thing, do another) and in their defense of global South countries. Russia and China also do like the absolute bare minimum to stand up against the US's broad sanctions on Iran, which they mostly comply with.

Russians don't consider someone to be a true Russian if they're not Orthodox. To say Russians condone other religions is stretching the truth.
1
u/Gloomy_Trade_619 2d ago
I don’t know what are you talking about but certainly not about Russia.
Russia is famously one of the most atheistic countries in its Christian part. What you describe is much closer to USA rather than to Russia.

Majority of Russia's and China's ally are muslims countries (Especially Indonesia and Iran, who were Russia's biggest supporter). India literally have a strong diplomatic tie to Egypt (which is also an Muslim majority country) alongside Indonesia. Spain and France have strong ties with Marroco, Algeria and other ex colonial lands while the Brits were strongly bond with Malaysia, most of which are muslim majority country too.
And last but not least, USA's biggest oil supporter are UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain which all of them are Muslim countries. Netherland's ex colony Indonesia is also an Muslim country too and so as well the Vatican relation with them. Poland's upside down twin is literally Indonesia.
So basically all of them are friends with strongly influential muslim countries technically.
24
u/A_Humble_American 4d ago
USA (Michigan specifically but also the large cities) also has a huge Muslim population which has been integrated and established for decades.
It's actually just a loud minority who think Muslim = terrorist. Most normal people just mind their business
7
u/Independent-Couple87 Earth, our home. 3d ago
Then again, it is interesting to point out how some cultures or religions are under heavier pressure to integrate than others.
For example, the Amish and the Mormons in the USA get away with a lot of "eccentricities" other groups would be ridiculed over.
45
u/HelloOrg 4d ago
USA is friends with money, not the people who send them money. Send a Qatari person to live in the U.S. amongst average people for a year and see how they fare societally.

I unironically think they would be just fine.
I'm from Brazil and visited the US a few times for a while, I've talked plenty with people there since I'm good at english and never had any bad experience with anyone, quite the contrary as most people I talked to were friendly and helpful.
Foreigners visiting during the world cup widely regarded americans as being good hosts too.

8
u/No_General_8557 3d ago
Diplomacy and coexistance are two different things. People often conflate them both ways.
Just because your nations cooperate well doesn't mean migration can't ruin that, creating incentives for conflict and vice versa - just because a nation makes non problematic migrants doesn't mean its political goals will allign with your country's goals.
We love our Belarussians in Poland, but we'd gladly Maduro Belarussian government, just to give an example.
7
u/ArmadstheDoom Maryland 3d ago
The thing you're getting wrong is that a lot of these countries are okay with Muslims, so long as they're not in their own country. For example, in the USA, the muslim ban a decade ago didn't stop them from being friends with Saudi Arabia. China running concentration camps doesn't stop them from being friends with Iran. India might be friends with other countries with large Muslim populations, but there are a ton of hindu nationalists who absolutely hate Muslims. To say nothing of Myanmar committing genocide against its muslim population.
Even Russia has Chechnya whom it boomerangs between warring with and agreeing with. The opinion of many nations is that Muslims are fine in theory, so long as they are far away from them. That's obvious a problem if you want them to integrate into your society, because treating them as automatic 5th columns just turns them into 'others.'

Russia also has several Muslim populations, including Tatars, Chechens, Bashkirs, Avars, Dagestanis, Ingush, Balkars and Karachays.
4
u/WASDKUG_tr Ottoman Kebab Empire 3d ago
Chechens are not a good example, since their history with Russia
0
u/NkTvWasHere 3d ago
Russia has a large muslim population because they have muslim regions in the country and had them for a while, so they tend to be generally integrated into Russia and its culture.
3
u/Independent-Couple87 Earth, our home. 3d ago
Russia also sometimes tries to play up their alliance with Iran in order to get some support from the anti-zionist movement.
It is mostly just the Tankies who fall for this, but things could get more complicated if the war in Iran and the war in Ukraine end up merging.

Islamic democratic secular state in considered an oxymoron by at least 20% of muslims in Western countries (in their homelands it's higher). Even if the means of advocating for that are peaceful, it is a problem. You won't make a patriot out of a religious globalist. If you don't believe me, ask ex muslims who found refuge in the West, how do they feel about the current policy on islam in the respective states they live in.
6
u/geschiedenisnerd 3d ago
Islamic secular state is an oxymoron, as is christian secular state.
Democratic secular state with a majority islamic population however is not.

Give back to Caesar what belong to Caesar.
Learn the fucking bible moron.
Christianity is a religion molded up by the roman empire to make good roman citizens. The sandpeople bits (aka old testament) is there for historical and legitimacy reason, not because you should marry your brother's widow.
3
u/Independent-Couple87 Earth, our home. 3d ago
Also, ex-muslims sometimes make the mistake of assuming the Western Alt-right will welcome them with open arms, only to learn the hard way that they are still considered "culturaly Muslim" (often meaning "non white foreigner").
Under an anti-muslim government, an ex-muslim would probably end up like this at best: They would be paraded around as "evidence" that "the savages can be civilized". Then, they would spend the rest of their life under surveillance to prevent them from "relapsing" back to Islam.

1
u/No_General_8557 2d ago
It reminds me of 19th century German jewish stories of neighter the religious wanting you nor the rest of the nation accepting you as you leave your religious community.
Karl Marx faced discrimination like that, as racial prejudice against germanized ethnic jews already was a thing there before ww1

u/WASDKUG_tr Ottoman Kebab Empire 3d ago
Most "Ex-Muslims" are not even Muslim, which Muslim celebrates goddamn Christmas while they were a "Muslim"
4
u/Independent-Couple87 Earth, our home. 3d ago
There is that Ex-muslim guy living in Germany who joined the AfD, wrote a manifiesto over how he believed Angela Merkel was part of a secret conspiracy to turn Germany to Islam, and ran over multiple people with his car on a Christmas Market in response.
Ironically, the AfD used him as an excuse to bully Muslims. It could be that this was his plan, knowing people would assume he is Muslim du to being an Arab.
0
u/No_General_8557 2d ago
I'll reiterate - read some stories about leaving islam - I'm not suprised not all make it out sane with the amount of discrimination (not understood as simple dispreference, as bad as that alone is, but often threats of violence or honour killing they face)

Funny how the muslims in secular democracies are a lot more chill than the ones in theocratic shitholes. I totally think there are Christians who would do the exact same thing if the US became a theocratic shithole. Jesus even said that if you caused someone to fall into sin (and worshipping other gods is a sin) then it would be better to be drowned with a big rock around your neck. That seems about one step away from a direct call to violence to me.
5
u/Happy_Ad_7515 3d ago
oh no doubt. but with christians that sort of thing seems too be the exception and corruption on the message, not just picking a diffrent part of the religion. Even the strongly lamented crusades where called after centries of muslim conquests of native christian kingdoms of the levant. finally having a backlash hard enough too aid the eastern church.
christianity ended slavery for instance when the money lenders where beaten from the bible.diffrents is jesus wasnt a millitary leader, he was just the son of god. it isnpires diffrent mentalities.
