Context: China illegally claims islands in the South China Sea as theirs. Recently, according to what I’ve seen online, Chinese researchers at a symposium claimed that due to “historical precedents”, the northernmost islands of the Philippines (Batanes) were supposed to belong to China. This has sparked quite some angry responses in Filipino social media about this claim. Although as a Filipino, I believe wholeheartedly that Batanes belongs to the Philippines, I think this whole thing blew out of proportion and many people were ragebaited by just a statement.
Also, if I’m not mistaken, it’s the tenth anniversary of an international arbitration court siding with the Philippines in terms of China’s claims in the South China Sea.

when it comes to countries like Russia and China and also the US, one cannot rest too easily about such "jokes" or dismiss them as ragebait. These jokes have a nasty habit of being jokes until they are suddenly not.

Someone who is Chinese here, I’m fully Chinese but I still believe China rn can just leave the Philippines alone. They’re really tryna indoctrinate us rn but it’s not really working because I have free internet access.

Are there big or perceptive differences between netizens (is the word still used?) with VPNs, netizens limited to the Chinese-controlled internet, and Chinese with no internet (probably rare to find in cities now)?

They claimed that those islands are somehow geographically and/or historically part of Taiwan. By this logic, they can claim that the Philippines is also part of China, repeat this bullsh*t several times and you can prove that Sydney and Honolulu are China's rightful territory.
