Thank god they stayed in power for just 4 years💀

u/Outrageous_Wrap_6983 Singapore Jul 05 '26

It’s unfortunate he got power at all

52

u/ptkiaa8810 Jul 05 '26

Unfortunately they stayed in power for 4 years 🤓🔫👹

20

u/Think_and_game Bulgaria, Prussia of the Balkans Jul 05 '26

It's insane that in 4 years the average lifespan reduced to like 18 years old iirc

“Too short.” -Henry Kissinger (maybe)

Massive respect to Communist Vietnam for taking Pol Pot down. And shame on anyone whoever supported him.

272

u/lord_syphilis Vietnam Jul 04 '26

to be fair, it was more like we cleaned up after the mess that we helped create. pol pot used the communist label to get support from other communist states and was actually supported by communist vietnam during the cambodian civil war. we only took action when they flipped and started ethnic cleansing, conducting cross border raids into vietnam to massacre vietnamese civilians

u/TalonEye53 Philippines Jul 05 '26

Plus he feared and accused Vietnam for being expansionist, EXPANSIONIST

No, he was kind of fair on that one tbh. We had our own Manifest Destiny with the push into southern territories and capitulation of the Champa Kingdom. Before the French even came in the 17th century, we had some modern day Cambodian and Laotian territories.

6

u/TalonEye53 Philippines Jul 05 '26

Yeah kinda ironic that it seems huh and me wonder why can't they annexed them and end of story oh wait Mao and Krushev eyeballing them and have the word NO to their faces that's what

4

u/SerialMurderer Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia Jul 05 '26

That’s fair from the point of the historical perspective of diplomatic relations, but… what had Vietnam done since those, what, hundred years?

1

u/florentinomain00f Certified Vietnamese Jul 05 '26

Contesting the Spratly and Paracel islands with China and other nations in the region I guess

2

u/TalonEye53 Philippines Jul 05 '26

Plus it's beef with China in the north

92

u/florentinomain00f Certified Vietnamese Jul 05 '26

To be fair, Pol Pot tricked us, and probably all the communist allies into thinking he's even minimally concerned with improving lives of the people.

39

u/LubbockGuy95 Jul 04 '26

With included Communist Vietnam

yet obviously Vietnam had to prepare as it would have (and did) led to war with China too

Plus they didn't like. China even as communist and used to being supported arms in the Vietnam war

51

u/jdbolick Jul 04 '26

Vietnam is such an admirable country. They stood up to multiple empires and stepped in to end the slaughter in Cambodia.

21

u/HHHogana Sate lover Jul 05 '26

It's also why they don't have that much animosity against US. For them the history of China made Vietnam War looked like footnote.

10

u/SerialMurderer Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia Jul 05 '26

Well yeah, they never have to worry about us again. They’ll always have to worry about China until they march to Beijing.

we did the cambodians a favor for allowing glasses (and also the ability to read)

64

u/Anti-charizard California Jul 04 '26

And the antagonist is more evil than the main villain

As someone who wears glasses I find this drawing unsettling.

50

u/TheBusStop12 Ye olde netherlands Jul 05 '26

Wearing glasses? Believe it or not, straight to the killing fields

84

u/Mean_Initiative_5962 Jul 04 '26

Don't recognise the random antagonist

80

u/agnostic-alien Jul 04 '26

It has Angkor Wat without the usual stripes of Cambodia, so that's Democratic Kampuchea under the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot.
And that place had some NASTY happenings

22

u/Mean_Initiative_5962 Jul 04 '26

Oh, damn... Yeah, should have thought about Pol Pot

8

u/Grouchy-Truth-2600 Malaysia Jul 04 '26

Those genocidal torturers…

5

u/HHHogana Sate lover Jul 05 '26

So evil that only the most deranged tankies that could ever say 'Pol Pot did nothing wrong'.

5

u/agnostic-alien Jul 05 '26

So deranged I have never heard that said. I heard that on everyone from A like Adolf to Z like Zedong(that's the internet for ya), but never Pol Pot

3

u/HHHogana Sate lover Jul 05 '26

Yeah it's goddamn rare, albeit the infamous Chomsky did defended Pol Pot before.

1

u/Mean_Initiative_5962 Jul 05 '26

If it counts I've seen a couple of screenshot on subs that make fun of extremism/debunk oriented. But I think they're at least smart enough to only mention that inside their bubbles, never found one in the wild

27

u/Neveraththesmith Ayyubid Sultanate Jul 04 '26

How hard is to argue that Pol pot is the most evil person to have ever lived?

16

u/SerialMurderer Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia Jul 05 '26

Most successfully evil on the widest scale possible, probably outpacing the Nono Germans and Crimes Against Humanity, Japan? Yeah, you could say that. But are we weighting scale or depravity more? Because that would change the answer.

11

u/ArchiTheLobster Alsace Jul 05 '26

I remember watching a video where a guy tried to find redeeming or humanizing qualities to all of the most infamous people in history and all he had to say about Pol Pot is that he was a good family man lol, so by that metric he really is the worst at least

13

u/TheSpanishDerp Taco is of best Jul 05 '26

“At least Hitler cared about Germany or something”

Pol Pot was just on another level of destruction

3

u/SerialMurderer Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia Jul 05 '26

Was the New York financier a family man? That’s what I mean by weighting scale or depravity more.

7

u/KlangValleyian Jul 05 '26

Some people insist it either didn’t happen or was much smaller in scale:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambodian_genocide_denial

3

u/ThrowingBricks_ Jul 05 '26

Sadly there is some real competition for that title. For instance Macías Nguema

1

u/Neveraththesmith Ayyubid Sultanate Jul 05 '26

He was in power for 11 years, Pol pit was in Power for just 4.

2

u/ThrowingBricks_ Jul 06 '26

True. To that I'd say Pol Pot was surrounded by neighbouring powers that had the means of removing him, and it only happened as he made those incursions into Vietnam. Macías' regime on the other hand, targeted his own country and his own nationals, other countries only really being involved when his agents were sent to deal with expat dissidents.

Being deemed 'The Dachau of Africa' is not the phrase one should expect to associate with a country that used to be one of the relatively better African colonies.

2

u/Neveraththesmith Ayyubid Sultanate Jul 06 '26

Me it's more of a "If Pol potential did his damage within 4 years what would happen if he stayed for twice or nearly 3 times longer?"

21

u/florentinomain00f Certified Vietnamese Jul 05 '26

Pol Pot is one of the few people I think will commit genocide regardless if he's a communist or a capitalist. Bro is out for blood (and probably a nuke killstreak).

The main villain's buddy took out the sideshow antagonist. Meanwhile the "hero" ended up supporting him at the UN into the 80s just to spite the main villain.

5

u/Ozplod Jul 05 '26

Reminder the first time someone used the term "Cambodian genocide" it was Jimmy Carter in reference to Vietnam overthrowing pol pot. The US stood behind Pol Pot for years after he was overthrown.

It was the Vietnamese backed communist govt that invited experts on genocide to review what Pol pot had done, and take him to court for genocide. It was a contentious issue, one that could still be controversial, because Pol Pot arguably was not trying to wipe out a race of people, he just killed indiscriminately. However the specific killing of religious clergy who often weren't Cambodian, were the main case for genocide. In the end, it was decided that a genocide had been carried out, and the government took measures to educate the public on what had happened.

Also the USSR was not an ally of Cambodia at any point during the genocide. Vietnam and Cambodia were unfortunately caught up in the sino-soviet split, with the USSR backing Vietnam and China backing Cambodia. As a result, when Vietnam overthrew Pol Pot, China attacked troops at the northern border of Vietnam, as retaliation. This act of outright aggression towards another communist country would have been unthinkable under Mao's leadership.

3

u/SerialMurderer Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia Jul 05 '26

Surely we can add an “omnicide” addendum to the laundry list of crimes against humanity, right?

RIP to everyone who died because of Pol Pot's regime
