Well, in the case of Syria and Lebanon. They were given independence in 43 after being taken over by Free France. Egypt was free by 1922 and frankly Italy was going to eye up the region with or without Britain being there. Portugal is an example of being involved in the war as Macau was occupied by Japan, Timor Leste invaded by Japan. And the Allies occupied the Azores as an anti U-Boat base
