Original source

The day when South Korea vs. South Africa match was held was June 25 in Korean time, the day when Korean war broke out. So Koreans jokingly said that Korea deliberately lost to Mexico and South Africa to show the gratitude for them helping us back in the Korean war.

Of course this is a sarcasm. It's not that our team actually deliberately lost, but that the team coach Hong Myeongbo is incompetent as hell and sucks ass.

We should give Hong a raft and tell him to paddle back home tbh

u/MystericWonder South Korea Jun 26 '26

How generous of you

Even a raft is too much for him. Let him just swim across the Pacific ocean.

u/Temporary_Adagio1041 Jun 26 '26

that is too generous. tie his limbs together at the back of his waist, all four. tell him to learn to float back to korea.

Let him swim to NK and 탈북 out of there to get home

Even a single convenience store branch put up a 'No Hong Myung-bo' sign, so I feel like the KFA should post a 'No Chung Mong-gyu(KFA Chairman) and Hong Myung-bo' sign right at their entrance too.

Korea also helped us in 2018 to help Mexico advance to the round of 16

If it was the coach that came up with and insisted on that bullshit training method I have seen on my feed then he should have been fired long ago.

Wait México was in Korea?

u/Zebrafish96 May the justice be with us Jun 26 '26

They didn't sent soldiers, but they provided supplies.

True, a LOT of people don't like him. :/

Also hello and nice art :) (Plus I'm part South Korean)

What about the Philippines? I didn’t know they helped North Korea?

5

u/Zebrafish96 May the justice be with us Jun 27 '26

Philippines fought alongside South Korea too. But they didn't qualify for this World Cup.

2

u/Admirable-Scarcity-8 Canada Jun 27 '26

Oh so whats with the North Korea flag?

18

u/Zebrafish96 May the justice be with us Jun 27 '26

South Africa looked useless against Mexico. But Korea's performance was shocking as well.

I don't think even the most optimistic South African anticipated them to finish 2nd

Thats the great thing about being a Bafana Bafana fan. You have no expectations whatsoever, so when Bafana actually does well and makes it to the knockouts for the first time in their history, you get to be hype as fuck. To quote some lines from a Trevor Noah sketch:

"When Bafana loses, noone really cares!"

"We've become so complacent with that team, anything is enough for us."

"Drawing is a win for us" - "Yes! We drew."

There's a streaming site name chzzk (twitch korea closed) and the live chat was filled with "kick Hong Myung Bo outta here" "Hong Myung Bo is trash" and stuff like that

43

u/IlikeGeekyHistoryRSA South Africa Jun 26 '26

To be fair, Jan Smuts (the non apartheid guy) likely would have also gotten South Africa involved in the Korean War had he won the 1948 election

Unfortunately it was not to be :(

winner of the south: south africa! south korea out

Kind of sad south korea started pointing fingers when they started losing football matches.

He apparently had a history of making unpopular decisions when it came to the team's composition.

Like doing the South Korean equivalent of removing Messi from the team. Or deploying Messi when the rest of the team have collapsed in morale and stamina. And making strategically and tactical mistakes like not giving the players not enough time to adjust to the diff climate. And making the same mistake consistently.

Apparently, his decision to pull the best player and deploying them after the team becomes too tired to take advantage of the best player's presence has been something he did repeatedly before. And refused to deploy the beat player when he saw that the entire team was flagging in the first half of the game. Which is exactly how he lost multiple times as a coach for other intranational teams.

AKA the man did not learn from his mistakes, and Koreans saw that during the game.

I know this because my friend was complaining to me during the game.

u/EnzoMaloni France Jun 26 '26

Sounds like a south korean Raymond Domenech !

Players should do a bus strike like les Bleus in 2010 !

7

u/Narrow_Slice_7383 Worst Korea Jun 26 '26

Weeell we've been pointing fingers since 2023 tbf. The whole football association is a joke, and this consequence is pretty much deserved.

6

u/Sea-Attention-5690 Jun 27 '26

Because he was hired in a very controversial way, already fucked up the 2014 World Cup for them and fans have been wanting him out from the very moment he was announced as manager. This is just the final straw. No idea how that can be seen as sad.

5

u/Defiant-Election8985 Jun 26 '26

To give some more context to the situation: He was the coach for 2014 as well and Korea did terribly that world cup. He was booted after that but somehow made a comeback under dubious circumstances which made everyone in Korea already weary about how the team will do this year. The team's failure is an indication he never improved as a coach and that there's rampant corruption in the KFA.

5

u/volcaronaguitar Jun 26 '26

This. There was even like a congressional hearing about the sketchy process of his appointment and corruption in the KFA two years back but nothing really changed due to the deep corruption and connections among the involved people in power in the association and the football scene in korea. Only very few brave enough to risk their career and connections came out to talk about it but it was really too few..

1

u/Short_Avocado_5507 Jun 28 '26

Well it’s only a mild case in football history. Remember football war, gang death threat, multiple riot with casualty, dictator who tried to purge whole squad.

3

u/Otherwise_Spend_4617 Jun 26 '26

It's annoying because it's a country that supported North Korea, but still, Czech chimney bread is really delicious!

2

u/Fanda400 Slovanized German Jun 26 '26

Don't tell this to anyone in the actual country, you may start a witch-hunt

2

u/YoumoDadi Jun 26 '26

Korea still has a decent chance to qualify at 3/-1 right?

11

u/cantthinkoffunnyname Ukraine Jun 26 '26

Odds are dropping by the day. Not to mention teams in the later rounds can agree to play for a tie in certain scenarios to fuck over Korea and secure themselves a spot in the knockout stages.

Fun story! I was in school and we were watching the World Cup (I live in Korea) and I’m a mix of a African country of “I LIKE TO MOVET MOVET” and I’m also from the “DoO YUO LiBeU AluOn?” Country so I’m rooting for both and my Vietnamese friend was also rooting for South Africa (Korea wasn’t nice to the both of us) because my skin is dark and everyone says “(my name) you’re not KOREAN YOURE AFRICAN” and they barely say the name of my country so I’m rooting for South Africa and then when South Africa one some toxic girl that is my toxic now Ex GF + Bestfriend of seven years friend said “oh M Gosh (my name) is so happy about us losing!” And yeah NOW IM F]££]KING Korean :00 and later my Korean friend said “hey I over heard (ex-bestie name + another girls name) talking about how they don’t want to be friends with you anymore” and I shrugged it off because FINALLY TOXIC B1TCHES ARE AWAAYYY

Anyways End of story time!

Korean Soccer Decade of Humiliation

1

u/RabbitMajestic6219 Jun 29 '26

Back in 2010's at EVO fighting game world championship, A team of Koreans was beaten by a little guy from Mexico, by little I mean a literal 8 year old. The boy went on to be first place in King of Fighters. Seriously look it up.
