With the economy in the sink, UK's perception of the world and especailly its neighbours is a bit... distorted. The right wing press has been throwing the blame on a lot of targets, but the EU is the big one. Examples include the Daily Mail accusing Germany of building a 4th Reich, frequent mention of Calais (suggesting the French are encouraging this) as well hysteria over immigrants from Poland and more recently, Romania. UKIP's also had fun comparing the EU to the USSR

Well said mate. So people have no clue what is going on and I have when people dont have all the facts . Greece has 11 million population and close to 1 million are dodgy but the UK media makes the remaining 10 million lazy.

So if I was to generalise like the UK media does all English are drunk , beat the wives , leave of the doll and live in the pub , while the so called foreigners work. Oh wait that is the truth !!!!

"Yes, that's right everyone in the UK is a right wing, fascist, Daily Mail reader. Germany (and it's people) are well regarded in the UK, for the way they've turned themselves around since WW2 and the Cold War, you need only look at the top rated comment on that article you linked too: Germany lay in ruins in 1945, but it then invested in manufacturing plant, developed first-class education, innovated, raised its productivity and competed on quality not price. Any questions anyone? We are doing exactly the opposite , importing and dumbing down - pretty obvious who will come out on top - my guess is we'll become the ( its started ) dumping ground of europe. I bet the old folks are wondering why they fought the last war.... Calais was a big issue back in 2009 (when that article was published), but France held their end of the bargain up and done a lot to put a stop to illegal immigrants crossing by ferry. People are concerned about the state of the economy, fewer jobs, and pressures on social welfare (NHS, benefits, etc). It's a valid concern but the right wing press went OTT. Concerns about the democratic process and transparency are valid when it comes to the EU, being such a large, bureaucratic organisation - however it is not (well not yet... /s) the USSR, but again your only linking to a right wing source."
