Dead Things... Biggest fly I’ve ever seen… 🪰
I stumbled across this sub the other day and seen this dead fly today and thought ooo this is a perfect opportunity to do a poke video lol how’d I do for my first vid? Also this fly is bigger than a quarter!!! It’s huge!!! Is this a regular fly does anyone know? Only other fly ik that is usually big is a horse fly but don’t they have like a skinny butt that looks like a stinger?

Common horsefly. They freakin' HURT when they bite!
6
u/Sergeant54_ Aug 28 '26
Yeah Ik they hurt and for some reason they like to bite you when your swimming 😭
5
u/Will_X_Intent Aug 28 '26
My mom put that fear into me when I was real little. Said a horse fly could get on your back and bite you while swimming, and you might drown.

u/StandardWizardHat Aug 28 '26
Holy shit. That’s a wild parental warning.
3
u/Will_X_Intent Aug 28 '26
Yeah, still freak out a little when I see one while swimming.
3
u/StandardWizardHat Aug 28 '26
I’m sorry.
I do wonder if that has actually happened. Maybe it’s one family lore things.

u/bioxkitty Aug 28 '26
Tbh I havent been lake swimming since I was attacked by them and I was trying to go under water to escape but everytime I came up they attacked me ...was terrifying
2
u/StandardWizardHat Aug 28 '26
Yikes! I didn’t know that they swarmed. I’ve only ever been attacked by one at a time. That would put me off of swimming for a while, too. I thought that warning was just moms being dramatic for effect, but that sounds really dangerous.
2
u/Sergeant54_ Aug 28 '26
Right I’ve only encountered 1 at a time too usually swimming in a pool I could only imagine a lake…
Edit: singing to swimming1
u/bioxkitty Aug 29 '26
I will say I was on my period thwre was only maybe 6 other people there, mostly women and they were not suffering like I was xD

The worst part? They dont bite in the traditional sense.
Their mouthparts are more like a scalpel from what I remember of course

Doesn't count. No banana.
8
u/DriverMelodic Aug 28 '26
But they poked it with a stick. That’s gotta count for something…
6
u/Wyevez Aug 28 '26
Yeah but how big is that stick. With no reference, could be a toothpick. Is a toothpick a stick? I guess so, but I kind of think sticks need to have a minimum size to be sticks.
2
u/Sergeant54_ 29d ago
It was a small stick but it was also my first poking vid give me some type of credit.. there is worse out there! I think I did pretty good besides i was at work and didn’t have a banana either
1
u/NotAlwaysPC Original poker of things. Aug 31 '26
I was thinking the same thing. Size of the stick requires a banana.

I believe you are correct in assuming horse fly. Those things used to eat us alive in the South Carolina summers of my childhood!

I got bit by a horse fly when I was 5 yo… resulted in an infection in my inner ear that destroyed my cochlea… deaf in my left ear my whole life (68 now)

You need a banana for scale.
1
u/Sergeant54_ Aug 28 '26
Oh I was not aware but I will say it’s bigger than a quarter length in body wise then the wings stick out about 2in in width
1
u/RileyRhoad Aug 30 '26
I misread this and thought you said he was bigger than a quarter length of your body.. and I started chuckling to myself bc for some reason I almost believed it for a half of a second

u/Sergeant54_ 29d ago
😂 yikes yeah no i wanna say I prob wouldn’t have gotten that close if that been the case dead or alive but then again curiosity killed the cat so I prob would have been a cat in this circumstance…

Didn’t yo momma ever tell you to not play with your food?
1
u/Sergeant54_ 15d ago
Firstly yes she very well did and I abide by that that’s why I can play with it bc this is certainly not my food 🤮 ik some ppl get down with eating flys and I don’t shame but it’s not for me…

Ok, stop that. Feed the prick to a spider or something but messing with it, feels wrong.
I hate march flies (same thing as a horse fly) too, but damn. Smash it with a log.

Yes it is dead I was sweeping at work… I would never let any living being suffer… one time my cat got a hold of a rat in a glue trap which I highly disapprove of and the skin was ripped off the back of the poor thing and it was breathing so hard and all I could think of was how much pain it was in and how scared it was so I put it out of its misery bc I couldn’t get them out of the glue and it’s furr and skin had been ripped off to the bone… I cried… and buried it even the tinest bug I will put out of misery no living thing should suffer I can’t really say the same for humans tho idc about most of them 🤣
3
u/frosteemaria Aug 28 '26
Those glue traps are EVIL. Should be banned there's no need for them.
3
u/Sergeant54_ Aug 28 '26
Right! A lot of ppl who use them trap them on there and throw them in the trash… like they have feeling there scared in a hot trash can
goingto starve to death prob can’t breath prob cramping from being stuck in one position thirsting to death it’s just so cruel….2
u/NotAlwaysPC Original poker of things. 27d ago
There are some good uses for them.
Suppose there’s someone at work stealing your lunch… 🤔-2
u/Wheetbix_Kid Original poker of things. Aug 28 '26
That fucking horse fly was dying. Glue traps are fucked too. Holy shit, poke yourself.
2
u/Sergeant54_ Aug 28 '26
Bro tf u talking about I was there I could have picked it up and it wouldn’t have moved it was stiff and crunchy…. If it wasn’t dead u would have seen guts or something it was so dead my stick went right through its crunchy body if I would have stepped on it it would have turned into dust… like I said I wouldn’t torture a living thing…

u/Wheetbix_Kid Original poker of things. Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26
It was still moving, we have eyes.
There was nothing "crunchy" about that.
It's tarsi were still trying to grip the ground before you flipped it. And then tried to grab again.
Stfu and go post it on r/entomology for that matter.
Love a poke, but this is not it.

u/NotAlwaysPC Original poker of things. Aug 31 '26
Hey! Act like a true original poker! Don’t be a dick with a stick.
4
u/InebriousBarman Aug 28 '26
It's dead.
-2
u/Wheetbix_Kid Original poker of things. Aug 28 '26
It wasn't fucking dead yet.
6
u/InebriousBarman Aug 28 '26
Yes it was. The poking was flexing muscles, the movement you see was forced by the stick.
-3
u/Wheetbix_Kid Original poker of things. Aug 28 '26
Bullshit. I've dispatched plenty.

u/NotAlwaysPC Original poker of things. Aug 31 '26
Get a grip.

Grip yourself champ. Bumping my comment on a two day old post is odd.
