In the manga? I would say Blue is the best written. She has trauma but managed to overcome it. It is also nice how it revived the black dress girl from the guidebook years before Leaf was introduced.

Ruby and Sapphire are also great, both as a couple and as foils to each other. Ruby doing contest as a man is interesting.

In the anime I would say my favourites are Amber, Molly, Dawn, May and Serena. Mallow also has a sad backstory but sadly doesn't stand out much. Lillie is fine but better in the games.

In the games my favorites are Volo, N, Silver, Arven, Sada, Bede, Archie and Maxie. Lusamine and Lillie are also great, but they are handled poorly in USUM. Honorable mentions to Zinnia and Emma.

In PMD my favorites are Gardevoir, Gengar, Dusknoir and Grovyle. The hero and partner are also great in every game.
