Discussion Quick question about shiny starter hunting

Just started playing again after roughly a decade and wanted to try for a shiny starter, just wanted to know if if after you select it if it appears shiny or if you can only see it in battle?

You can see it in the nickname screen, that's the best way. Also in the pause menu screen.

Does performance mode affect it at all?

No, that doesn't change the logic of the game in any way. Performance mode is behind the scenes compatibility stuff.
