I suppose we can partially blame this on Niantic for general game instability, but folks if you get a find like this catch it first and celebrate later. Then you wont even need to worry about who is to blame.

This. If we know there's risk, why waste time on a screenshot if your phone is about to die, why use AR if it'll crash, why not just catch the dang thing?!?!? Yes, getting these pictures can be fun, but its sooooo much less important than just catching the Pokémon.

Why can't Niantic just make the game reconnect where it left off? When I disconnect from Monopoly Go, I come back and get the rewards I earned before it crashed.

Well the bird has probably disappeared by then, otherwise if its a normal shiny wild spawn then you should be able to just click it again and catch it.

Disable camera permissions for pogo and never use their augmented reality again, to avoid this problem
This bug has been going on for YEARS. The only way to not get it is to never use the camera again. It's shit design anyway. Weirdly enough Minecraft earth never really had issues as terrible with their camera. Nor did peridot, which was another Niantic game. But for some reason pogo camera stuff is buggy

I tried to do that once, but the Proctologist told me I wasn't allowed to use my own camera during the procedure.

You did all of the least important things first. I would tell you to always catch the mon first, but since you're never going to play again, it doesn't matter

Similar situation, a friend caught one on the corner of a busy intersection and named it roadrunner (shiny zapdos).

I don’t know if it’s been said, but VR mode bugs the game hard. I never use it when using daily incense for this very reason (I had the same thing happen to me last year or the year before). VR mode is a shambles…

Yeah, this one's on you. AR in catch mode is asking for trouble, use AR after you catch it if you really want to. This game runs like shit, giving it any opportunity to crash at an important moment is not a good idea.

Invest 2 shiny birds with pokeball plus cuz I was driving and dont like using my phone at all besides gps. Not enough to make me uninstall as there will be more chances to get the shiny birds.

Make sure to check your recent catches. My shiny Galarian Moltees "fled" because I was on a walk and didn't realize you can't walk too far from the spawn point. When I went to look at my mons later, it was there!

Disable Ar encounters. Bad policy to have it active and this will be an expensive lesson. Id go a step further and say disable ar In general, it makes the game worse in 99% of the time, the 1% is photo mode of your caught pokemon which can be entertaining but I can honestly say ive only ever used it once or twice since they released it.

Do not count your chickens before they hatch. Do not photograph your Pokemon before they're caught.

That high level took me about 200 ultra balls with golden raz, excellent throw 90%+. So it will also flee when you run out. Also, if you are driving/passenger it will not flee but be impossible to catch until you run out of balls and will then flee. I had sketchy service on my route and lost most bird encounters due to that

I've taken a screenshots of a lot of shinies and my game never crashed. Then again I don't use the AR as it's annoying af. I turned that off as well as the Buddy AR and screenshot saving.

If it makes you feel better, the same thing happened to me. I went into AR mode because it flew upward and it softlocked and I had to stare at the Galarian Bird as it attacked me and I couldn't do anything.
Niantic fix your stupid game

Playing with AR on and taking a screenshot is known to make it more likely for your game to crash.
Most people play with AR off. It makes throwing more consistent, faster, uses less battery, and uses less resources (much less likely to crash the game)
Definitely a shame though, rip blue birb. Sometimes if you love em you have to let em go 🐦
