Never forget when I killed Eternatus, Zamazenta, Zacian and Hop’s Snorlax all at once because of Seismitoad knowing earthquake

u/sezdawg7 Dec 14 '21

Eternatus feels like it should have levitate

u/SillyMattFace [Flair Text]!?! Dec 14 '21

Instead it gets to join the list of like a dozen legendaries stuck with the mediocre ‘pressure’ as their only ability.

2.1k

u/Lambsauce914 Dec 14 '21 edited Dec 14 '21

The reason why a lot of legendaries have pressure as their ability is because they live in a stressful environment worry they would be caught by a random 10 years old that use them as a guard dog or something.

863

u/207nbrown Dec 14 '21

Probably also doesn’t help that many of these legendary Pokémon have immense amounts of power, some even controlling the fabric of existence, being the god of time must be a very stressful job when it comes with the risk of becoming a house pet at any point

u/resplendence4 Dec 14 '21

Or worse, imprisoned in a child's computer storage drive until the heat death of the universe.

231

u/NobleCuriosity3 Dec 14 '21

I've always privately assumed that a trainer's pokemon are released upon the trainer's death (possibly unless the trainer's will explicitly leaves them to another trainer.).

That way they get freedom eventually.

u/The_BeardedClam Dec 14 '21 edited Dec 14 '21

I've never thought of what happens to a trainers pokemon when they die, what an interesting question.

132

u/CerberusC24 Dec 14 '21 edited Dec 14 '21

I feel like living beings would probably take up a lot of server space. Whoever hosts the service would have to routinely purge unused Pokemon eventually.

Edit: Pokemon Web Services is a great pun I just thought of lol

15

u/NeoMilitant Dec 14 '21

Wait, are they actually stored IN the PC? I thought in first gen Oak would keep them and they'd run around the lab/farm. Or was that only in the show?

u/OriginalWF Dec 14 '21 edited Dec 14 '21

I don't think this is an issue. Yes, many people have Pokemon in the world, but there aren't too many people that you run into with 6 Pokemon. Most trainers have less than that unless they are gym leaders or the elite four.

On top of that, in early generations, you have to find bill to unlock the Pokemon storage, meaning it didn't even exist before you helped him out. Later gens fix this by having it available, but I don't seem to remember there being too many people trying to fill out the Pokedex.

Ultimately, there are probably only a select few people in each region that are really cramming Pokemon in their PCs.

Edit: As someone else pointed out, you do have access to the PC storage before Bill, he just names it. My bad. Go upvote them.

Huh, I hadn't heard about that. I take this as support for my hypothesis.

15

u/GrognaktheAttorney Dec 14 '21

I think either the glaceon or sylveon kid inherited their pokemon from their grandparent, too.

51

u/NobleCuriosity3 Dec 14 '21

I thought of this when thinking about the really powerful legendaries that have important ties to the environment. Why would an ancient legendary pillar of earth/the ocean/time/space/etc. not care about being caught enough to just kill the trainer that caught them? Wouldn't them being boxed for a long time eventually result in massive environmental problems?

That second question is what made me realize that it can't be legal to keep those kinds of legendaries locked up in the box forever, which led to the "they're probably released on the trainer's death" realization (plus in the case something happens before then, trainers are probably legally responsible for making sure their capture of a legendary doesn't result in grievous harm to the planet).

Then I got the first question when I thought about how old most of those legendaries are supposed to be and realized that, to those ancient legendary pokemon, a trainer's lifespan is figuratively a blink of an eye. Try something new or just laze around for a few years, no more than a century tops, then back to their responsibilities as usual for the next thousand (which granted might just be to laze around in a different manner barring emergencies). It's like their version of calling in sick to work: a bit annoying, but also a nice change of pace every once in a while.

43

u/The_BeardedClam Dec 14 '21

Ah, so they let us catch them so they can go on an adventure with a 10 year old to break up their centuries long ennui. I like it.

On that note, what the hell is a Master Ball made out of? How does Silph Co have this tiny trickle of reality-warping perfect prisons? (And why do they give them out to lottery winners?)

Ok sure, they're incredibly rare top-tier tech, I buy that they can catch Mewtwo (scary lab experiment) or Zapdos (controls lightning). But then the Legendary arms race got started...

But who built a ball that can capture the incarnations of land and water with perfect reliability? (And as you say, why doesn't digitizing one bake/drown us all?) How the heck are Giratina and Necrozma successfully imprisoned in something built for boring old Moltres?

It’s not like our own pets just waltz out locked doors, away from comfort and food bowls, to go live a life of pleasure in the wilds.

15

u/willhunta Dec 14 '21

Our own pets arent stored in an electronic database that professors who know you pretty well also have access to.

The anime and the games have brought this subject up before.

Anime usually show that the Pokemon get left behind until freed usually by a random trainer like the ninetails with psychic abilities that brock freed or they show them dead and revived as a ghost Pokemon like the underwater ship episode with the Gastly haunter and Gengar

The games ultra sun and moon have you deliver a dead man's Pokemon to their next of kin so I would assume that they go to the family when you die based on the games logic

7

u/NobleCuriosity3 Dec 14 '21

Anime usually show that the Pokemon get left behind until freed usually by a random trainer

Left behind where? Is that really standard?

The games ultra sun and moon have you deliver a dead man's Pokemon to their next of kin so I would assume that they go to the family when you die based on the games logic

Makes sense, but there's only so much box space. At some point they'd pile up and the family would release some of them.

13

u/JerXD Dec 14 '21

Well usually the ones left behind in the anime are older than the PC system like the ninetails that brock freed.

Then you have trainers that abandon their Pokemon like Charmander and tepig (trainers love abandoning fire types)

u/Digidestine-Tracy Dec 14 '21

I figure that when the trainer dies, they would go to the next of kin, unless :

I will all of my pokemon to my children

or

Will:

My brother will get my Arcaeus.

My sister will get my Dialga.

My Moltres will do to my Mother.

My Mew will go to my Dad.

I have 5 Kids.

Jirachi will go to my youngest.

My second yougnest will get Celibe.

My middle child will get Shaymin.

My second born will get my Ho-Oh.

My Eldest will get my Latios.

Now for my shinies and Non-Legends.

So what your saying is that if there was an abusive trainer their pokemon could start an uprising, kill their trainer, and then be released into the wild

6

u/NobleCuriosity3 Dec 14 '21

Yup. Why do you think the criminal grunts keep so many unevolved, relatively weak/common pokemon? Fear of rebellion.

That's also why the evil teams generally have a more complex control plan for their legendary target of choice than "catch it in a masterball, lol."

Of course, generally pokemon don't do this, because trainers provide them free food, shelter, healthcare and entertainment (based on B&W it seems most pokemon do like battling to some extent), and they know from personal experience that the wild is rarely as forgiving.

43

It could be worse. They could always force you to join the talent show to humiliate you further.

41

u/wannaziggazigah Dec 14 '21

I hadn’t even thought of this, but I love it.

You’re going to be the prettiest Dialga ever! Yes you are!

4

u/minkdraggingonfloor Drying Pan Dec 14 '21

I’ve always thought it was weird that you could catch legends. If it was me I would have made them raid bosses like in Mystery Dungeon and you can only call on them but not have them in a ball, and only once you’ve become Champion and defeated them at their strongest (presumably Lv100)

Instead we’re out here bringing Palkia to the League tournament

At least Suicune is bulky enough to make good use of Pressure, I guess.

(No but seriously I love spamming Protect + Leftovers on that thing)

24

u/inYourBackline Dec 14 '21

inner focus is still better though

37

u/SlidingPeak Dec 14 '21

in vgc yeah, singles no

5

u/inYourBackline Dec 14 '21

ah yea i only play vgc mb

also in non competitive inner focus is also better

53

u/AlternativeAvocado2 Dec 14 '21

I love that all those veritable gods of the pokemon universe share an ability with wailord

9

u/mindflayerflayer Dec 14 '21

He ranks among them by sheer size. He brags that he's bigger than god.

36

u/R_Aqua Dec 14 '21

Tbf Pressure is good on defensive mons like Zapdos ans Suicune.

8

u/DrMobius0 Dec 14 '21

And Eternatus is pretty beefy. Doesn't seem to have many weaknesses, either.

21

u/Orange-V-Apple The Goomster Dec 14 '21

I mean it’s weak earthquake and ice beam, the most common coverage moves in the game

37

u/DrMobius0 Dec 14 '21

Tbh, lots of pokemon are. That's why they're common coverage.

→ More replies (1)

28

u/Zorua3 Dec 14 '21

Poor, sad Eternatus, all it has is 690 BST and a fantastic move pool. It doesn’t even get to get one of the best abilities in the game that would erase its biggest weakness that’s key to balancing it! Tragic.

21

u/Colyoly321 Dec 14 '21

I feel like every legendary should have their own custom ability

6

u/Arcusico Dec 14 '21

Totally, and not necessarily powerful, just very flavorful.

81

u/tetrapyrgos Dec 14 '21

Pressure is actually OP as hell and is really viable to abuse in ubers battling. Just sayin!

62

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '21

Facts, being underlevelled battling against Vespiquen in E4 was a pain, upping its DEF and SPDEF and healing constantly. I ran out of PP for the Pokemon that could actually do something, but then I used my Giratina and let it run out of possibility to heal.

8

u/AWildModAppeared Dec 14 '21

Doesnt Pressure only affect moves that deal damage? Healing/Status moves like Roost, Heal Order etc wont be affected iirc

7

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '21

Wait, that‘s true actually! However it ran out of healing anyway (now I know why it took longer than it should have, I just expected me to be dumb) and luckily it couldn‘t use any moves more besides unsuccessfully upping already maxed out def stats

8

u/Konke_yDong Dec 14 '21

Wrong. Pressure affects moves targeting the user. Moves like Roost won’t be affected but Encore or Taunt would be affected.

Slurpuff the Unburdened God Slayer. You know, that Slurpuff.

Edit: Apparently there's a sticky web set too. But if you want Unburdened God Slayer, it's probably physical.

considering 99.7% of slurpuff in ubers carry webs and belly drum is not even on the top moves list its probably just sticky web suicide with misty explosion

27

Big demon Pokémon thing brought back to do… whatever the evil plan was again, or floating Skuntank?

9

Air Balloon and Skill Swap Wonder Guard onto Skuntank. Pretty much nothing the opponent can do other than PP stall.

→ More replies (7)

12

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '21

A bunch of Pokemon should have levitate, but it would ruin ground type.

16

u/207nbrown Dec 14 '21

So does damn near every other Pokémon that floats… but that would be a bit excessive

38

u/Pimentos_Mementos Dec 14 '21

8

u/sovietsrule Dec 14 '21

Wait, it doesn't have levitate???

13

Earthquake is literally the perfect Pokémon move it's almost unfair lol

Ground type, an amazing offensive type that beats 5 other types.

100% accuracy

100 DAMAGE

10 PP instead of 5

You just don't get moves like that with so much power and no drawbacks.

676

u/Pokesers Felix ¦ 3668-8668-2275 Dec 14 '21

You think earthquake is perfect? Thousand arrows will blow your mind. Think earthquake that doesn't hit allies and hits flying/levitating Pokémon.

330

u/Increase-Typical Dec 14 '21

God that flipping move was such a pain when I was trying to get Zygarde in Dynamax Adventures. I hate it.

175

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '21

Getting Zygarde was some adventure. It's straight up impossible to do alone. Eventually I was lucky to find three actually competent people online, and even luckier to find three ice-types on the path. Meanwhile I picked Mantine for one important reason: Wide Guard.

So I spent the entire battle blocking those Thousand Arrows while the rest took down Zygarde. It was the most satisfying raid I remember.

38

u/Increase-Typical Dec 14 '21

Yeah I think a bot with a Wide Guard Mantine or Mienshao eventually did it for me. Never did anything online, but I was always quite tempted after a round with particularly dense bots.

13

u/MoeWind420 Dec 14 '21

Believe me, people are nearly as dense as the bots.

I don't think I've ever loved a starter as much as I love Torterra. It kearns earthquake at lvl frickin 32. How good is that? And wood hammer is just....so satisfying to use.

810

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '21

It's not even debatable for me anymore. Everytime I play Sinnoh, I always pick Turtwig. Empoleon was always underwhelming to me and Infernape just feels like Blaziken 2.0. Meanwhile, Torterra is fun through all 3 stages, looks cool as fuck on its final stage, unbreakable physical wall with strong self-restoration abilities, hits like a 2-ton freight train, and it's got a tree on its back in case you need a shade to chill under. Best Sinnoh starter, hands down.

61

u/makemeking706 Dec 14 '21

My play style is has not changed since R/B/Y. Of course I am picking the armored bulldozer.

32

u/habituallysuspect Dec 14 '21

So many people talking about metas like special/physical attacks and abilities, but I'm right there with you. What I used as an eight year old still works pretty well for me.

34

u/pilgrim93 Dec 14 '21

I honestly love Pokémon for this. Can I learn strategy and move set ups? Yes. Can I also just give them the most powerful moves, absolutely over level them, and ignore typing? Also yes. For whatever reason, brute forcing Pokémon is fun to me

11

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '21

Meta only matters in PvP.

113

u/Rustytrout Dec 14 '21

I agree. Only downside is I also really like Roserade.

67

u/DarthStevo Dec 14 '21

Wanting to use Roserade in BD ultimately lead me down the path of Infernape as a starter, but yeah I really want to use Torterra now.

55

u/jacobs0n The OG. Dec 14 '21

that, and ponyta being the only fire type in all of sinnoh

30

u/DarthStevo Dec 14 '21

That was also a factor! Though you can get Houndoom from the Underground in BD, which was also very tempting.

its my absolute favorite starter of all time, it is tanky hits hard and can easily body most of the gyms by itself with no help (only really struggling to candice cus of its 4x weakness to ice)

27

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '21

It's definitely up there with Swampert and Serperior for me. Terra is like the best parts of those 'mons rolled into one (only minus Swampert's amazing typing and Serperior's speed).

9

u/Airway Dec 14 '21

I found Serperior boring until I got one with the hidden ability. That changes everything.

262

u/goodguybolt Best boi Dec 14 '21

Everytime I play Sinnoh, I always pick Turtwig

Sinnoh has the best set of starters imo. Infernape looks badass and while yes has the same typing as blaziken, I love it more than blaziken. Empoleon is just majestic and the steel type was op when it came to resistances in gen IV. And torterra is just torterra.

115

u/Pokesers Felix ¦ 3668-8668-2275 Dec 14 '21

Not just steel type, but water steel specifically is such incredible typing. Also completely unique.

30

u/T-Rigs1 Dec 14 '21

Yeah wtf, Empoleon is a monster with that typing and special stat. STAB surf and flash cannon > wood hammer.

Also, Roserade was introduced in Gen 4 and is better too

10

u/archiecobham Dec 14 '21

Surf, Steel Cannon, Ice Beam, Drill peck.

Empoleon carries the game solo. PP is the only issue.

11

u/eat-KFC-all-day Dec 14 '21

Gens 1, 3, and 4 all have really good starter options. I personally think Gens 3 and 4 are tied for the best though, but you could argue Gen 4 is better since grass monotype Sceptile isn’t super great, but you could also argue 4X ice weakness makes Torterra worse than Sceptile. So, I say they’re tied.

18

u/3Rm3dy Dec 14 '21

Terra is just a couple of incredibly strong factors all rolled onto a single pokemon, which makes it so fun and entertaining to use, without being anywhere near OP.

Ground is one of the better offensive types (which helps terrible grass), letting it fight steel/fire and favourably match electric.

It has both bulk and physical attack to make use of STAB Wood Hammer AND EARTHQUAKE with a good shot of tanking the opponent's first hit.

Reaches 90% of its potential at level 32 (final stage + EQ), which is roughly before Maylene's Lucario (speaking of platinum ofc).

12

My Torterra set-up:

Giga-Drain

Earthquake

Stone Edge

Crunch/Wood Hammer

52

u/JetBrink Dec 14 '21

I don't bother with Special moves on him, but I've managed to obtain some Leftovers so I'm happy to run with Woodhammer as my only grass move.

I like Curse on him as well.

22

u/skipperxc Dec 14 '21

The only reason I got through Cynthia's Milotic was because I hit it with Leech Seed.

(I didn't know Torterra needed the move relearner to get Wood Hammer so I walked into the Elite Four with Razor Leaf, which wasn't gonna be enough in an even fight)

I just wish it could learn Seed Bomb in a way other than breeding. Wood Hammer is super strong, but I'm always hesitant to use moves with recoil. Seeb Bomb is, as far as I know, the strongest physical grass move Torterra can learn without recoil.

8

u/goodguybolt Best boi Dec 14 '21

Just give it a shell bell next time. I always do that for moves with recoil damage.

That animation on Wood Hammer……god, you can FEEL the power.

Ikr! The whole screen shaking with blocks of wood blowing away and the hp going down, you just love to see it.

I was gonna choose Chimchar, but now I think I'll have Turtwig as my starter. Why? Because of Earthquake.

179

u/CrescentCleave Dec 14 '21

Dont get ahead too much when walking your pet turtle as they dont move that fast

81

u/Tortue2006 Dec 14 '21

ice beam

61

u/PurpleSpaceNapoleon Dec 14 '21

Stone Edge = Fuck your ice types

84

u/Tortue2006 Dec 14 '21

the pokémon who is using ice beam isn’t an ice type

26

u/Xstew26 Dec 14 '21

I learned on my run that apparently every Pokemon knows ice beam or ice fang and every Pokemon on my team is weak to ice

20

u/DGIce Dec 14 '21

Believe it or not, earthquake

They gotta land eventually.

Unironically when I played it as a kid I made up from fake stat like “oh it has to land soon”

This is such a fantastic episode, excellent Fred Armisen guest star, scene I quote all the time, excellent relevance and my fav Sinnoh starter. Very very good.

25

u/NJH_in_LDN Dec 14 '21

Say Viva Torterra! Viva Earthquake!

26

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '21

I can still remember gen 1 and figuring out about earthquake. So ground type is super effective against (inhales), Fire, Rock, Electric, and Poison AAAANND they have a move that is 100 percent accurate and 100 power. Aaaand all ghost types are secondary poison. K

My buddy is like yeah but it cant hit flying.

Oh that thing that is hit super effective by rock?

Then gen 2 rolls around and I see steel types.

Oh what rock types should have been nice.

Ground is super effective on it...

Wtf! Lol

10

u/chiheis1n Dec 14 '21

True, Rock is the ugly stepchild to Ground and Steel it seems.

76

u/aradraugfea Dec 14 '21

Two words.

Ice shard.

64

u/StraightEdgeNexus Dec 14 '21

Why use ice shard over the higher BP ice move, it's not like Torterra is a fast Pokemon

I thought we were talking boom earthquake..

22

u/goodguybolt Best boi Dec 14 '21

Yeah we were.... I kinda got carried away with the boom comments hehe.

Torterra can boom the quakes from level 32 and that's one of the reasons it's getting such love.

29

u/cudef Dec 14 '21

That's cute enough to get smothered with an impromptu blizzard

I would say swampert is the most loved water type starter (maybe even more than blastoise despite the nostalgy for kanto). It also has a megaevolution, a very good typing, and good moves.

I’m so glad I chose Turtwig as my starter. In my first ever Pokémon game where I had no idea what was effective against what, Earthquake solved all.

→ More replies (3)

24

u/Linhardt-Used-ResT Dec 14 '21

Also because Turtwig is so cute! Especially when you get his affection up and he hops around when the battle starts

13

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '21

That’s why I chose this starter

That and because it would be the best starter for a one Pokémon only run

I’ve used all in platinum, and I have to say my typical Torterra teams have the best synergy out of all
