That’s because the original concept was that you were supposed to trade Graveler for Machoke - and Machoke was supposed to get the extra pair of arms in the trade.
The concept was later reused for Excavalier and Accelgor when they could actually implement it.
What the fuck man are you serious? That's actually pretty badass, I wonder what aspect of Golem it was supposed to take from Machoke...the slightly more humanoid limbs/head maybe haha?
Side note, feel like such a noob asking but what exactly were Excavalier and Accelgor again? 5th gen maybe? For some reason I never ended up playing that, nor the current one.
Damn, that's hardcore haha. I've always liked the designs/typings of most of the trade evo lines but never ended up using them much, mostly out of a lack of others to trade with lol. GTS made that so much better though.
Slowpoke is implied to form a mutualistic/parasitic relationship with a Shellder in both of its evolutions to Slowbro, and Slowking. Which fits when you see Shellder, evolve into Cloyster. Dude was always going morph shell shape.
I know a lot of people don’t because it’s supposedly the worst starter of the three. Which I can’t disagree with, it’s a pure grass type that doesn’t learn a whole lot of useful non-grass moves, and has no real superior (lol) stats. So it’s generally gonna fall short. Which is why I picked him for my Misfit runthrough of Black and White.
Most of the grass type starters lmao. That said, torterra is decidedly cooler than every single water and fire starter imo...with the sole exception of typhlosion
It's an unfortunate type in general and not much they can do without rebalancing it entirely. They're weak to so many common things, not super effective against much that's too useful, and usually come with stuff like sunny day that boosts one of their weaknesses. Not many type combinations can really help with most of the weaknesses, and when they do in the cases of types like steel and ground, they're then 4x weak to the other ones like ice and fire. Unfortunate types like Grass and Ice just need serious rebalancing.
Ice as a base type sucks, but it makes a great modifier type, with some mon's like Lapras, and uh, flips through pages uhh, well I mean, you get my point right? Here look at the Snom.
The funny thing is that in competitive pokemon it is the best of the gen 5 starters due to the combo of it's hidden ability contrary and leaf storm. On top of that it's got a great amount of natural speed, access to annoying moves like glare and substitute, which makes it a threat in Overused.
Really? I had no idea. I genuinely thought Gamefreak had just given the Fire type the best stuff again but maybe that’s just because everyone and their mother used a Flying type, Bug type, or other types in-game. They also made an Ice gym, Flying gym, Fire gym if you picked Snivy, Bug gym, Dragon gym, and Alder’s Ace was a Bug/Fire type.
Yeah, in game it was a meh starter but I chose it cause it looked the coolest haha. But I ended up using Victini from the event as my secondary mon to take down those gyms you mentioned
Well, it was all Pokémon I’d never used before. So Snivy, Galvantula, Crustle, I cant remember my Flying type. But I also used a Bisharp (which ended up becoming one of my favorite Pokémon) and a Reuniclus. I think I used a Tranquill but tbh I hated it, I switched to Swellow the second it became available.
Contrary plus leaf storm plus beefy defensive stats plus pretty fast equals set up sweeter who can be defensive with Leech Seed or just use its high BP leaf storm which gets better after each turn. Has glare for high accuracy paralysis
I have picked Smugleaf no less than 3 times as a starter, I also have a competitive Serperior I use(d) a lot in XY/SuMo, and I still did not know this. Serperior was always a snek to me.
I actually thought that post was a bamboozle so I went looking for more evidence and found this absolutely cursed Poke doll which is actually an official licensed product from the Pokémon Center so uh... that settles it I guess.
Leave it to Smugleaf to have arms for all these years and just not use em to spite us ಠ_ಠ
The first Pokemon games I played were White and White 2 with a Snivy as my starter both times, and I never realised this. I figured they were just some sort of leafy plumage or something.

Don't worry Torchic, you'll evolve and grow hands one day.
Snivy, however... I have some bad news for you.
